Quick question for everyone riding their trainers this winter (which seems like everyone here).... What kind/brand do you have, and do you like it?  I want to buy one soon, so I just wanted to get an idea of what people look for/like in terms of features, etc because they all look the same to me (I've only ever ridden outdoors, but now that it's snowy out I probably won't be going out there for a while!)

I have a magnetic trainer. I bought it really early on without really looking into the different types, and I regret that. It is really REALLY noisy. Get a fluid trainer. Lots of times you can find them gently used for a lot less money.

I will look when I go downstairs to ride tonight... all I know right now is that it's bright green but I love it! Can you tell I let my husband be in charge of these purchases?

GoGoGo - 2010-01-05 5:05 PM Since I am on a gym rant...mid-20's female, slimish...walking on the treadmill next to me, reading a magasine!!!!

You in some semblence of shape. If you can read a magasine on a treadmill, you are not working hard enough!!!! If you want to tone yourself...work!!!

Rant off...

Oh well, different goals, I guess. Being a Type A is not easy

I know I'm a day behind on this . . .  but I love it when my strength training takes twice as long because I am waiting for machines - where people are sitting between sets either watching the TV (WHO put those in site of strength machines??  I think sometimes people forget where they are) or READING while sitting there - SERIOUSLY?  Twice in the last week - reading!

I feel better   Thanks for listening!

IT drives me Crazy when I see people reading on the bikes and the treadmills...but the other day there was a women talking on her cellphone on the bike. I wanted to explode. REALLY you think she is getting any sort of workout???

Cyclops Fluid 2.  Very quiet, easy to set up, good resistance.  If I could just talk my wife into letting me get a power meter and a Zipp wheel, it would be ideal.  Nevermind, that's not going to happen anytime soon.

rnihill - 2010-01-07 12:11 PM It was a little depressing though because I swam at basically the same speed as which I did over the summer when I was swimming regularly. I haven't swam in months... I'm not sure what this means... is it bad because I apparently only have one speed? is it good that I haven't lost that much in terms of the swim?QUOTE]

I would say it is a good thing.  If you haven't swam for months and haven't lost pace, your times should improve for next season as you do drills and endurance sets.  Don't worry about time for now, get used to the water again, relax, and think long strokes until  you get back into the rhythm of things again.

Good job in getting back in the water!

I spent 35 minutes on the trainer this morning, including some one legged drills that were just awful. I suck at them and they suck and I hate them.

Hmmm... one legged drills.  If you haven't done those in awhile, I bet your hamstrings will be lovin' you later.  Did you at least keep cadence with the barking beagle?

One leg drills are awesome to clean up your cycle stroke  and find a couple of extra miles per hours on that next bike split .

Yeah, that's why I figured I sure start torturing myself with them this winter. As for the beagle, it would be so awesome if I could have my trainer at work but sadly can't. I've often daydreamed of setting up doggie treadmills in the back play area, and then secretly grinning when owners come to get their dogs and wonder why they're even more tired than usual.

It snowed only about 1.5" last night, so I got to run in it. So pretty!

I thought your rules were very funny and very true. It seems some people are allergic to sweating ... hahaha!

I had a walker next to me last night who turned of the fan next to her that was blowing a lovely and welcome breeze on me ... i asked her to turn it back on when she was done.

I read something about this.  Can't say where ...  It was saying that you get more hungry because of how cold you get when swimming so if you warm up quickly afterward (say with a nice trip to the sauna, if one is available) there is less hunger. It's still an aerobic activity and fuel is important ...

I think we have this too. It is pretty quiet.  We also have a mag trainer ... don't know which kind but that's the one my bike is set up with and it's just fine too.  I have it set to good resistance - it's a little louder when the cadence gets up there. My cat doesn't like the sound ...  we have a crappy schwinn one too that i hate so it's in a closet.  Yes, we have three trainers ....

Hi everyone!! My new job is sucking up a lot of time, so the next couple of weeks are going to be tri-light for me out of necessity. I'm going to buckle down in the second half of the month and complete 100% of my goal workouts though, don't worry!

Keep up the great work everyone.

I guess I'll have to "force" myself to relax in the hot tub after I swim next time to see if I'm still so hungry! I just think it's funny... After biking, I'm hungry but not ravenous. After running, I am actually NOT hungry. But after swimming I am so darn hungry that I even get the shakes sometimes until I eat. And I feel like my stomach is a bottomless pit. Maybe swimming isn't good for my training after all... I won't fit into my tri shorts this summer if this keeps up!

Haha, that's what I thought when i was taking swim lessons and there was no sauna or hot tub at the city pool!  But ya, seems to be something to it for me ... the thing was that you're cold so that your body wants food to warm it up. I know, very scientific explanation! hahaha!

Oh, those people allergic to sweating... they drive me nuts when they take up bikes at spin class. How do you not break a sweat in a 90 degree room for a one hour spin class?

Oh, I am SO jealous right now!

I did reward myself last night for getting in the pool and riding 20 miles on the trainer with some cheese and a Cab Sauv (Edge from Napa, I believe). But still... that is SO much better than my lunch of my daughter's pb&j that she wouldn't take to Kindergarten and a banana! And water. sigh...

I wish I was hungry only after swimming!  I average between 3,500 and 4,000 calories a day in six to eight meals and still feel that I'm starving.  It is so frustrating to finish a meal and 1/2 hour later being hungry!

Not sure if I'm doing anything today.  Picked up a slight cold yesterday and just feelin' blaugh.  I got some new swim paddles, so I might do a little swim this afternoon.  I definately plan on little trigger therapy and stretching later this evening after my oldest's baseball practice.

I hoping to get back on my running program this week.

Hmmm, maybe that's the reason I've never experienced the swimming munchies.... I almost always sit in the sauna or steam room after my swims.  I love it!

That's me today!  I'm super hungry!  I don't think it has anything to do with swimming, though, since I haven't swam since my last tri in August :-P

Actually, I've been ravenous since my run yesterday.  I just suddenly go super hungry in the middle of my run last night, and had to go buy a yogurt & gatorade at the gym as soon as I got off the treadmill.  Has this happened to anyone before?  Maybe I should eat more before my runs.
