christina322 - 2010-01-28 11:34 AM Hi all,

I am officially half way through my Couch to 5k!  Woohoo!!! Only 4 more weeks to go.

I am going for my official first swim today.  I don't have much of a plan-- I want to see what I can do and get a baseline.  Then I will start building from there.  Hopefully all goes well.  Wish me luck!

Sounds like a good plan.  Congrats on making it half way through!

I got to swim with my hubby at lunch - it's always so fun when we actually get to work out together!!

It is COLD here -12 with wind factor!! Tomorrow isn't suppose to be any better, Sunday however is suppose to make it into the twenties!!  Skiing on Sunday no matter how cold it is, it will be my first for year!!!!!!  So I'm going to switch my training around and instead of taking tomorrow off I'm going to spin and take Sunday off so I can go ski.  Swimming tonight and my Hubby is going to come with me, Yay, I like it when he comes with me, some quality time together without the baby!!!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!!!!   Laughing

TGIF!
Long run was done last night.  Weird run, had a physical roller coaster of "emotions".  Great first 3rd, then things started to hurt and felt like $hit, then felt like I was pushing a wall, and somehow felt good again for the finish.  Most beatiful night though for a run over the intracoastal waterway, 60F, clear sky with a rising near full moon with light winds.

I'm alone at the office today with a visiting engineer so I'll be busy.  Hope to get in an easy trainer ride later tonight and will get in a core WO.  Bringing my foam roller to work, need to torture myself later! Foot in mouth

Couldn't get in the brick yesterday.  Life and the weather just got in the way.  It doesn't look like I'll be able to do it today either.  I hope to squeeze in a swim this evening if I can't.

Yesterday was my first swim.  I can easily say that I SUCK at swimming.  I have a lot of practice drills to do.  Wow--I'm kind of discouraged but I know that if I practice and review all the tips that people have posted, I will get better.  I'm trying to stay positive here!Smile

I know exactly how you feel, Christina.  I'm struggling with the swimming right now as well.  It DOES get easier though.  Watch some videos and concentrate on one thing at a time!

That's right, stay positive!!  Remember that first run - it hurt, right!  Now it's getting easier!

The swim will get better, but it sucks really bad in the beginning, for me the first 2 weeks were really bad and then the first month was only marginally bad and now it is just challenging 8).

Christina,
How did your swim go?

I want to thank the guys who posted the swim thread again. I have been swimming 4 times in last week and boy did that thread help me. Mostly the breathing. I had no idea how much I actually held my breath.. I am now exhaling underwater and it has helped me tremendously to feel relaxed and smooth during the swim. I have to build endurance now.

Had a great swim tonight!  I was able to swim 300 yds without stopping (although I had to mix in a lot of back stroke).  My hip is a little sore right now and I think it might be from the new kick.  I'll have to get my muscles used to it.  Another thing I noticed was that I felt a lot faster when I stopped trying to look forward constantly and turned my head down to "swim downhill".  I'm not sure if I was really speeding up or if it was just in my head.  After the gym, we bought a new game for the Wii.  My little man and I have been playing some New Super Mario Wii and that game is GREAT.  I wish there was a thumb event in the triathlon.

I also had a really good swim tonight.  After a few months of doing only a once a week maintainence swims, I have been doing 3-4 x per week swims and tonight for the first time in a year I have felt faster in the water.  Now if I can only regain that feel in my stroke next time out.  I went way faster than my usual.   The combination of swimming 4x per week and doing "speedwork" in the pool I think has helped alot.  Ijust really hope I can regain that feel.  It is very elusive.

Good morning all!
Getting ready for my AM run into work.  Suppose to get some T-storms and rain when I plan to run home this evening so not sure if I'll be running home or having the wife pick me up.

Didn't get to do anything yesterday no core, not trainer, nothing.  Visiting client had me busy and I was spent by the time I got home at 9:30 PM, long day.

I just love to hear about good swims!!  We are in the midst of a winter storm, looks like it will be a little less than they thought - we might top out at 6 inches instead of 10.  I went out and tried to run in it - it was pretty comical since I only had regular run shoes, my trail shoes are on order but not here yet.  Still another bike on tap for this afternoon!  (and a little sledding but brrr - it's 17 degrees with a windchill of 6)

Hope you're feeling better soon Jocelyn!

I have been itching to try snowshoes or xcountry skiing!   Alas, no gear!  I'm not much of a downhill skier, but I might just work on that since we live so close to a ski resort now.

Happy Sunday everyone!

Went skiing today the conditions couldn't have been better!! Can't wait to go to the big mtn next time 8) I hope it warms up this week I would much rather be running outside.  I had a really awesome spin yesterday did some one legged drills plus that was a great way to find out that I'm not pulling up so will be doing that drill everytime I spin.

Sounds like everyone is having a good weekend!!

I love those one legged drills!  I might just have to throw some in my ride tomorrow.  I let everyone else ski today and sat in the lodge drinking coffee and reading!!

Hello Everyone... life has been busy. So far all workouts are in... I had to move a strength/core workout but got it in. Looks like i will have a full week this week as the training hours ramp up a little bit. Only 5 weeks to my first tri. I apologize for not posting more often. Life has been hectic with kids basketball, cheer, and my own training. BTW I think i am finally starting to settle in on my swim a bit. Anyone know of a lap counter that i could purchase. I tend to lose count after about 25 mins. Warm tidings to those of you in snow county.James

Here is a lap counter:

I thought about getting it, so if you do end up with it give us a full review.  I'm going back and forth between a lap counter and a tempo trainer for the water!

I currently count strokes to determine time/duration for intervals as I never get to the wall.  It is even more fun than counting laps.

The two things I think I was doing better the last two swims are rotating a bit better and maintaining my pull all the way past my hip.  So coordinating a longer pull with a slower rotation to get more out of each stroke.  It now feels like I am swimming the same speed/same stroke speed, but am going faster with longer strokes.

As I slip into a faster than I usually swim pace I find that I am even stretching more out front and out back and the motion is just a bit faster, less thoughtful meditation on the completion of the stroke and more core input.  I guess.

Unfortunately my skiing, with the T-Bar has fried my left elbow from going up the hill with 1 person in the T-bar.  Very odd and unexpected.  I am hoping that it improves this week.  It is very awkward for bike riding and swimming.

I should be back to running this week after a 2 week moratorium on running after the marathon.  I will now be sucking in all three sports and need to build them back up again.  Anyone ever build card towers as a kid and have siblings... ya kind of like that, more rebuilding than actually adding on to the structure.
