pdbman - 2010-10-12 4:13 PM I'm kind of sad. I just got back from my interview. We were sitting there having a nice talk. Things seemed like they were going fine and then suddenly it was over. He didn't ask me anything specific about my skills. We talked about his company and about what the companies did that I worked for. He had asked what I like to do in my spare time and I told him I'm training for a triathlon. (Was that a mistake?) So I asked if there was anything else he would like to ask me and he said "I think I know where you're at" and that was it. He didn't ask for references or anything. So I offered him the copy of the best written cover letter I have ever written and my references and drove home. I would say things went well except for one thing he said part way through "You have two of the three things we are looking for." I was really hoping this would go somewhere. Well its out of my hands now. Either they will call or they won't. I guess I better get back to doing my current job.

That's too bad, but it's not over yet. Hopefully no other candidates have three of the three things that he was looking for. Did he mention what the third thing was?

What type of position are you looking for? Are there other opportunities in your area at the moment?

Good luck either way! New opportunities will arise if this one doesn't work out, but let's hope that it does.

Just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear you are struggling to find the right job. Things are so difficult sometimes! I really can't compare because I do have a job but I have a degree, and PhD and nearly 5 years postdoc experience right now and I'm struggling to break into being an independent researcher which means I'm always on 12 month contracts. In fact right now I am on a 2month waiting for some money to (hopefully) come in. The main drama with me is that I'm in Australia on a working visa so no job, no visa....I qualify for residency but don't see the point in applying if I might have to move countries again within the year anyway....
Sorry, this was supposed to be about you! If there is anything I can do.....I'm always happy to proof read your teaching philosophy if you are looking for another opinion (I have lots of opinions).

Hopefully your situation works out too! I thought to share here because I tend to keep my problems to myself around the house since both of my parents recently got laid off. It's nice to talk about it sometimes. Thanks for listening!

Let me make the rough draft a little prettier first and I will send it your way. It's REALLY rough right now.

My dream is to complete my masters + PhD in Kinesiology and be a professor... but I am from the lower-middle socioeconomic position on the ladder and it probably won't be possible. I like to believe that I will have career success soon so that I can get my masters though.

Good luck with your research. What are you researching?

Oh, and I went to three Halloween stores to get accessories for my pirate outfit. I bought a hat, a giant sword (envy?), and fishnet stockings with a skull on the band!

How are everyone else's Halloween costumes coming along (for those of you participating)? Pictures are in order, this is an October challenge!

rh8463 - 2010-10-12 7:24 PM Oooh, I forgot to share! I have a 5.2k route I run most nights after training and I broke my all time record on it last night to make it in 25mins flat I can rarely run faster than a 5min km, added to that its reasonably hilly and I run it after best part of an hours training already I was pretty happy!

That's awesome!! Congrats!!

Well good luck with all of that - if you stick with it I'm sure things will work out, they have a way of doing so if you want something badly enough....and definitely send it through when you have prettied it up a bit!

I'm a mucosal immunologist/microbiologist. Currently mainly getting paid to research Burkholderia pseudomallei (obscure bacteria but causes nasty disease with 80% mortality rate so high in defence priorities..) but I have side projects in Neisseria meningitidis and really want to get back to that fulltime - I did my PhD looking at the role of salivary antibodies in prevention of infection, worked for a few years after that looking at cervical antibodies in defence from HIV.....cervical immunology is really interesting, I just didn't lfall in love with working on HIV.
As an interesting aside, I am also about to take over a colleagues project on resistance training in women who have undergone radiation and/or chemo for breast cancer - cancer is out of my field but the project is excellent and very interesting.

Great job!!! Dang that's a long run.

I'm not doing so hot today but I have to remember recovery is not always linear and overall it's getting much better. I told you guys I have chikungunya, right? This is not news? My brain is fuzzy and I keep forgetting who I've told or not.
