Veteran 239 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Debbie - 2011-04-19 8:57 PM Thanks for the encouragement pitbullzz. Ya, it was great to get one out of the way. I think I felt more pressure at this one than I will at Kansas. I will be scared to death at Kansas, but I knew a lot of people at this one and you just want to be fast with a sprint. Kansas I just want to have fun and finish it since I've never done one before. I have no time to compare it too either which is sort of nice. Ya, everyone told me in my Masters Swim Club that I should've put my time faster. A guy slower than me put a faster time and didn't have any trouble up front. I will do that next time. Do you have anymore events coming up before Kansas. Next weekend is my Half Marathon....a little nervous I gotta tell ya. It will give me an idea of my speed though. Great job on the tri, Debbie! I guess in your tri, you guys self-seeded the start? Haven't experienced that, as ours have been wave starts based on age groups. First thought on the Half-marathon... remember to enjoy the run, first and foremost. With the HIMs I have done, I fully expect to be passed, if not flat out swam on top of, by following waves, because I am slow, so I just recognize it and go on. So, when your mind wanders during your run, remember to smile... makes you forget the minor issues! Good luck |

Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Debbie, the sprint tri's I have done have typically been time trial starts if it is a pool swim. I am one of the slower swimmers and so far have done pretty well as placing myself. Then again, I test prior to the race and know my current pace (slow). I am doing a Oly 3 weeks prior to IMKs so I should have a pretty good idea on where to place myself in the crowd. As of the first of April, there are nearly 200 guys in my age group (35-39). |

Veteran 369 Cabot, Arkansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I agree with Triplebyepat...have fun with it. Hell, I know I'm outta my element and have chance of blowing away the competition, but I always have a blast. MMA is a different story...I'll hold my own there and take it serious, but this is something so new to me, I can't help but have fun with it.So please...not to be sexist...when I'm drained during the run...I want to be "chicked"...way better watching a lady run by me than some dude. It's not a pride thing for me...yet. I'll save that for after a couple more years of racing and try to hang with what will be my 40-44 age groups. My Twins r under 2, so they have no clue about me winning or not, they just like to see me finish |

Regular 80 Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Thanks everyone for the advice. I really want to have a good swim since that is what I'm good at so I'm just going to get out and go for it. The bike is going to be my weakest so anyone I pass in the swim I am sure I will see them pass me right back on the bike. I just pray for no bike malfunctions since I'm bike illiterate. And the run is just going to be a nice easy pace so I will be able to smile when I cross the finish line and not look like I need an ambulance. Pitbullzz, I have twins too. They are 11 and they both are doing the IronKids tri on Saturday. Good luck with your twins. |

Regular 80 Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Wow pitbullzz, your twins were really early. My girls came 7 weeks early and stayed in the NICU for only 10 days....but they were 5.1 and 5.8 so they were pretty good size for being 7 weeks early. (I also have a son who is 4). Have fun with your twins....hope they get along better than mine. |

Congrats on signing up, you will like the venue and the race. The bike has a combination of some rollers and and several good real climbs, especially after crossing the dam and then approaching the dam on your way back in. There are some relatively flat portions as well, but as anyone from Eastern Kansas can attest to, its NOT FLAT AROUND HERE On the run, there are certainly a few sections, especially around some of the aid stations when you are within the camp grounds where there is some shade, but expect to be exposed to the sun quite a bit as well. Good luck and see you out there. |

Save a little on the bike for the hill up the dam at mile 50. Trust.

Hoping for a bit of good weather over the next couple weeks. I haven't been outside training much due to the severe storms. |

Pretty Cool .... I saw that too. No Pip Taylor this year. She's doing Escape from Alcatraz the week prior and a 5150 the following week. I wonder which male pro's will be here this year. All the IM guys are chasing points for Kona, and I doubt IMKs 70.3 will give many points. |

Regular 80 Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Ya, this weather has been crazy hasn't it? Luckily it was nice yesterday for my first ever running race. I did the Illinois Half Marathon. It was a little cold in the morning and the wind was pretty bad at times but I am proud to say I FINISHED!!!! My official time was 1:53.21. It felt pretty good but I hit a wall at Mile 11....never walked though. I'm sore today and I hate to say this but I may have done something to my Achilles or my ankle. Can't really walk on it all that well and it looks like it is bruised a bit on both sides along with a swollen ankle. Anyone ever had this happen. I'm calling the doctor tomorrow and hoping for the best. |

It is getting closer to the race, I think only a few weeks left. Training is going good for me again. I was in a slump after New Orleans, it took me longer to recover than I thought it would but I had a good long ride this weekend and seem to be back on track. |

Regular 80 Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Ya, I've taken two days off but I've been so sore because of the Half and another reason is because of my ankle. Went to the doctor today. He thought it was either Tendinitis or a Stress Fracture. Did an x-ray today and it came out negative for a stress fracture. He said most of the x-rays come out negative. He said since I'm training for a HIM he wanted to get an MRI done. Waiting to hear when it will be. The nurse said I can keep swimming as long as there is not pain. If its a stress fracture I'm out at least 4 weeks with a boot which means no HIM. Say prayers for me. Keep up the good work everyone. |

Member 58 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Hi Debbie, keeping my fingers crossed for you that its not a stress fracture. I had a stress fracture in my heal last year -- only way to tell is w/ a MRI -- I was out for 6 weeks (was suppose to wear the boot, but couldn't bring myself to wear it -- too uncomfortable). I'm incline to think that if you didn't have pain before the race you may not have a stress fracture -- the pain in my heal came on gradually over a 3-4 week time frame and finally got to the point where I couldn't run. I continued swimming and did easy/moderate spinning (nothing standing tho) at the gym during the 6 weeks, but other than normal walking (i.e. to/from car, around the house, etc) I didn't run. The stress fracture healed and after 6 weeks I started back to normal training. Good thing is that since I was swimming and spinning, I didn't lose much of my cardio endurance so if it is a stress fracture, remember that not all is lost! Edited by krash478 2011-05-02 6:44 PM |

Regular 80 Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Thank you both so much. I really hope to see you in June as well. Ya, I never had pain before in my ankle. The only time it started to hurt.....and I wouldn't even say hurt, just a dull ache was on Saturday. And I never stopped running because of it. It feels better to walk on it now but the ankle itself hurts if I push on it. I will continue to swim!!! I have no problem doing one footed flip turns. You are right...anything to keep that cardio up. My husband trained twice and only ran 6 miles tops and I train since August and I'm the one injured. Go figure. Oh no, I'm not mad at all. |

Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Good luck Debbie. Take care of that foot/ankle and we will see you in less than 6 weeks. From what I've been told, this is about the time that many of us will see some physical breakdown from our training. Time to figure out which pains to push through and which to take seriously. |

I've got an MRI tomorrow. I am swimming tonight so that will be a test. I am determined to get to Kansas....even if I have to walk my whole 13.1. Thanks for the wishes. |

Extreme Veteran 492 NW Arkansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I would like to add myself to the group. I signed up this morning. This will be my first HIM after doing my first tri in just a couple of weeks from now. A bit scary but I'm very excited. I won't go into all the details here, but I'm returning to running after a hip replacement two years ago. Running is going great and I look forward to this challenge. Longer story here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=248818&start=1 I've booked a campsite, too. Thanks to all who have provided such useful information in this thread. |
