Welcome back, Alex! Tongue out

9 days until black belt test, 10 days until next 5K (if I am able to move after the test, LOL), 66 days for a tri I didn't sign up for yet but want to do (pool swim - must report 300m time at registration. Hoping for mine to be lowered in the next month or so) or 108 days for the first tri I am already registered for!

Motivation is high to see improvements in all 3 disciplines. I'm hoping this will be my strongest, best-trained-for year in triathlon yet. I have a bugger of a tri in Oct. (very hilly) that my sights are mainly set on (33 weeks away, crazy!), but I intend to be very ready for the races prior to that one and hope to beat previous results in the ones that I am repeating. To me, that is the best measure of improvement: beating a previous time on the same course.

Keep up the solid work, gang!

Still committed YOU BET!!!!

The Duathlon I had planned for March 10th has been cancelled... However, the Tri Club are looking to run a "Club Only" triathlon either St. Patrick's Weekend (17th March), Easter or May Day!

I am also close to signing up for my first Triathlon on 21st April on Portlaise, pool swim.

Short Bike & Swim today, switched between fast 100m and easy 100m breathing to left as I only breathe right at the moment. The focus on breathing both sides follows a question I asked on the Tri Club night out. It was put to me that if you are swimming in a lake or the sea and it is windy from the right then there is a chance of a mouth full of water ever breath from the waves unless you breathe left, great point I thought so teaching myself to breathe both sides.

Still working to the 20 Week Olympic Run Focused plan and haven't missed a session yet and in fact I am putting a little extra into most sessions.

A colleague in work is bringing me in his Trek 1000 road bike to test out with a view to buying, no price mentioned yet, any ideas?

Keep it going everyone!

Cheers

David

Short Run today so was due to run 32mins. However, given I set myself the February Goal of running a sub 26 mins 5K I decided to run a timed 5k to get a baseline...... 26mins 40secs! I really tried to set out at a fast pace and was running sub 8min mile for first 3k but it was tough. I dug in and am delighted with the time as it is a new PB! I will concentrate on putting some speed sessions into my other runs and go again in 2 weeks and I will hit that Goal!!!

What are your Goals for this month and how are you getting on?

Cheers

David - that is great!  Your running sounds like it is right where you want it to be, and you should be in a good place to beat that under 26 min 5K!

I'm somewhat sidelined by a cold or sinus infection or something along those lines.  Didn't go to TKD Wed or workout yesterday and I think I will skip TKD tonight, too.  Don't want to infect my classmates this close to the test.  May do a workout of some sort at home tonight to make up for 2 missed days if I feel up to it.  Maybe review my forms, maybe do a light bike workout and some core work and/or strength.  I have a hockey game Saturday and am hoping to be well enough to go for a little run Sunday, weather permitting.

Hope you're feeling better Melanie - I had a similar thing over Christmas...make sure you rest when you need to and dont push.

Swim this afternoon - 800yds and then bike trainer 45-50 mins.  Easy day tomorrow - probably a rest day with a long walk at the most before long run - hopefully 10 miles Sunday.

Have a great weekend all...Cheers!

Still it's a plan and you have stick to it no excuses!

Hope you're all feeling healthy and training is going well for you.

Rest day tomorrow.

Hey guys,

Been out for the last week plus cause of bronchitus.  I can barely walk without coughing up a lung.  Dr has me on 2 steiroids, and antibiotic and an inhailer, so i'm still gonna be out for a few more days.  Hope everyone is doing well, and happy training to all.

Todd - boy, that really stinks!  Heal quickly!

Jason - wow, which HIM did you pick?

How was everyone's weekend?  Mine was pretty good.  Mostly kicked my cold, my team won our hockey game Sat., and I got a decent trainer ride in on Sun.

So, Monday was a rest day and then I picked up a bug from the boys and was out of action layed up in bed for 2 days! Feeling better today but have not eaten for 2 days so I have decided to take the week out for recovery (will swim with club on Friday though).

Hope you are all feeling better and training hard.

I collected Trek 1000 road bike from colleague at work Monday but no chance to test it out yet. It's a 58cm frame and I have had to adjust seat to its highest position and so not sure but I think I really need a 60cm or even a 62cm frame but will try it out and let you know.

Cheers

Hope all the ill and injured are recovering quickly.  Sure seems to be rampant these days.

Just wanted to share the good news: after a grueling 4 hour test, I am now a black belt!!  Overall the test went very smoothly for me and my classmate that was testing with me, with the exception of the board mix-up.  Apparently when our sensai bought the boards to be broken for the test, he incorrectly (why or how we don't know) bought poplar instead of pine.  So when yours truly was asked to go first breaking a board with a hand technique, it didn't break after 2 tries.  At this point they realized something must be wrong (they could see I was using a good technique and using plenty of force) and began inspecting the wood more closely.  Thankfully my husband, who is a contractor, was there and told them of their error.  Even more thankfully, he had bought me a bunch of the CORRECT boards to practice breaking and I had taken them to the dojo and left them in the supply closet, so we had the proper boards on hand!  After being presented with the correct type of wood for the breaks, I was successful on my first try with both my (now changed to a different technique because my elbow was bruised and quite swollen) hand technique and my kicking technique.

But the banged up elbow was well worth the reward! Smile

Melanie, Congratulations on the Black Belt that is indeed an excellent achievement, well done!

Great news Todd, go for it again!

I was out of action with a bug for a couple of days and so I decided to take the whole week out and call it recovery. Fit again now and completed medium run today. Ran with a work colleague at lunch today and had a great session in the park with hill and sprint intervals.

Great to be training again!

Short Bike tomorrow and will use it to take the Trek road bike out for the first time, short swim later too.

Well done everyone and keep up the great work!

Cheers

Todd and David - glad to hear you are healthy again and resuming training!

James - how is your calf doing?

Thank you, everyone for your congratulations.  I am now ready to focus on having the best tri season yet!  Well, as soon as I get my leg/hip back in proper working order.  I went to see the ART guy last night and he suspects sciatic/priformis/hamstring issues.  He thinks he should get me fixed up with 2 visits this week and next, then see how things are going.  So for now I am instructed not to do TKD or any 'one-legged' activities included running.  Swimming and biking are OK (biking surprised me), so I am planning on swimming tonight and biking on the trainer tomorrow.  We just won't tell him that I have a hike scheduled for Saturday!

Well done indeed David...great job.

I'm being protective of my calf and avoiding speedwork on the run but have made real good progress on distance.  I put in a 11.2 mile run last Sunday (using run:walk technique) and will do another long run of about 10 miles (or so) this Sunday, which will be the last one before my HM on March 10.  As long as the leg holds up, I'll be in good shape.
