Hey Everybody,

I am just caught up on the board and it looks like everyone is doing well on the training front.

For those that have the PF issue in the morning I find that doing the PF stretches and PF massages at night help a lot.  I get a lot less tightness in my heal in the morning. Here are a couple of links:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/medical/IM02897

Kim,

Congrats on your 5k run.  It is a great feeling to achieve a goal.

Steph,

With a view like that, I dont think I would be able to get much work done.

Scott and Enrique,

Are you guys supplementing protein in your diets?  Based on your descriptions it seems like the amount of protein intake would be on the lower side.

Cheers

Scott and Enrique,

Are you guys supplementing protein in your diets?  Based on your descriptions it seems like the amount of protein intake would be on the lower side.

I'm not supplementing much. I add a few tablespoons of powder protein into post recovery shakes, but that's it.  Each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) I will eat either eggs, meat, chicken, turkey, or fish with a veggie side so I get a good amount of protein from that. 20 to 30 grams each meal.  Then I also eat nuts which have proteins in them.  broccoli and leafy vegetables also have proteins so that all adds up.

As a triathlete, I'm not trying to add muscle bulk.  Lean is better for a triathlete (generally speaking) so this diet works for me.  I'm pretty lean at 5'10" and 163 lbs.  Before eating a Paleo diet a couple years ago, I was at 177 lbs. so I lost 14 lbs during that 1st year and now have been stable at 163 for over a year.

When I trained for Ironman, my weight got down to 158!! Man was I lean... a little too lean, but I was eating and eating and eating and I just dropped to 158 and couldn't go higher.  I was burning so many calories....

stephsprint - 2012-01-10 6:38 AM Nice job on the 5k Phoenix! I've now had several days to rest and I'm ready to hit the training again. After work, of course. I will include morning swims as well. But for now it's time to get ready for work. I really got used to 'hanging around'.... oops. My new office is on the 46th Floor and I have a panoramic view of Miami Beach, Fisher Island, the Port of Miami, Key Biscayne etc. Gorgeous! I like to think about all the miles I've put on riding and running... and it really makes me want to go to the beach and OWS. Who knew work would become Tri-Inspirational?

Now that's a view!  I have a nice view of the parking lot and Checkers on the corner.  I also get to see drug deals on occasions- which is really weird considering I work at the Sheriff's Office!

Ann-Marie

That's funny! I think...

Our main office shares a parking lot in a strip mall on the edge of a sketchy area.  Some idiot actually robbed a woman in front of our building!  He was caught right away

Sound like everyone is doing a great job with training.  It also sounds like I may be the only one not to use mantras.  I try to stay focused on what I'm doing and keeping the correct form.  However, I must admit that more times then not, my mind wanders and I start thinking about a million different things.  Probably not the best thing to do and a definite problem when swimming as I lose track of laps very easily!  During this morning's swim I did make an effort to really concentrate on my form the whole time and not let my mind wander too much - I still lost track of laps.

Ann-Marie

I don't use mantras either.  I more concentrate on my breathing and form (not taking short choppy steps!)

When swimming laps, of course I think about form some, but I am also counting laps.  However I can't count in numbers.  Say that my set calls for 800 yards. That is 16 lengths in my pool.  P is the 16th letter.  So the first length I think a word or object that starts with A, next length is  B and so forth.  Usually I pick rough catagories (very rough because I have to think of a word quick and get back to thinking about my form)  So Apple one length, Banana the next and so on.  The next set might call for 400 yards, so I will pick a different catagory and different words.

Silly maybe, but it helps me track the laps.Laughing

"Counting" laps in letters is an interesting thought.  I'm afraid if I used it would go something like this: A, apple.  Oh, I need to buy more apples.  I wonder if I can get to Publix before work.  No, after work is probably better.  I need to get milk too......Now, what lap am I on?

Ann-Marie... that sounds like me! B... bananas... same thing! remember to buy bananas...

When I first started swimming, I would take some quarters to the pool. We have an infinity pool so there's no dry 'edge'. So i could move the quarters over one by one each time I did a lap. Now that I can swim for longer periods of time I'm back to being hopelessly lost! When I use all the tools.... pull buoy, kickboard, fins etc... I do 100 yards/4 lengths with each one and that helps... but the straight swimming... ah, who knows?

Hey Folks,

Regarding lap (and stroke) counting... if you have $100 discretionary to spend you ought to check out Swimovate.

The watch is incredibly accurate. It only works in the pool (not OWS), but I never count laps (or strokes) any more!  It uses an accelerometer to determine your arm movement and works very well in my own experience.  The newest ones allow downloading data to PC.  Mine is older and does not have that feature. Check it out!

Hi all!

It's been a crazy week.  I'm SOOO glad it's over.  Very busy at school (work) and my own continuing ed class started this week.   Last fall I went back to school as a student.  I am getting an additional teaching endorsement in English Language Learners.  I'm taking one class at a time, so it will take a few years.  But, even one class is difficult.  My class meets form 5 -9 PM on Tuesday's.  I'm usually in bed at 9!  Plus homework....I can barely stay awake reading a book I enjoy let alone a textbook. Oh well.

This week my Wednesday morning workout was a casualty.  Just too tired. Will get more benefit from additional rest than getting up to swim. And rest is very important, one needs to listen to their body.  Of course, the fact that it was a swim, my least favorite, made it a wee bit easier. (OK alot easierEmbarassed)

Anybody have fun weekend plans? training, racing or otherwise?

I have to attend a Bar Mitzvah tomorrow so hoping to get a run in before, otherwise Sat will be yet another rest day. Then it's my computrainer class on Sunday.

Wow, Suzimmer... your weekends sound as busy as your week days!

I'm eating grapefruit and drinking coffee. Contemplating my day. Husband is home so that means 4:30 alarm clock. SO WRONG.

Not too busy of a weekend.  I have Monday off for MLK day so that's a good thing.  Training for today is a high intensity bike/run brick workout and tomorrow I'm doing fast interval runs.

49er game today.  Any Saints fans??  You're going down!

Ran 13 miles this morning.  Blew of my normal after Saturday run swim which turned out to be a good thing, because a workman i had coming to the house was 30 minutes early (!); if i had gone swimming I wouldn't have been home.  Anyway, I'm using that as justification for being lazy.

I'm going to try to watch the olympic marathon trials this pm (3-5 NBC).  anybody else?

Was able to get my run in prior to the BarMitzvah service this morning. Yeah!  Now killing time in until the big party this evening.  Very fancy to-do. Will be wearing hose and heels.  I prefer workout clothes!   Guess I could start working on my homework for class, plans for school, laundry...none of those appeal to me at the moment.

Ill me missing in action for a few days. Right now I'm sitting in the airport in los angeles waiting on my flignt to maui, for work of course. I down loaded the paelo diet book before i left to see what all the hype is about. I'll have some down time to consider all that info. Hoping to get at least one run in and maybe an open water swim if the surf doesnt kill me.

So the Paleo thing is going well! Even with my husband home...we had one minor issue with the DirecTV thing and ended up going to a Shushi place to watch the NFL on cable and I managed to order fish without rice. Had a couple glasses of wine though (oopsie). But the vegetables have been fun to cook. Stuffed peppers for one. Eggs and fruit for breakfast. Still no idea how to cream the coffee... still using evaporated milk.

Hope everyone has a good training week. I'm going to try to run today. Wish me luck!

Paleo has been good for me too.  Alert, strong for heavy workouts.   I lost 2.5 last week.  But I've been bouncing between 22 (where I am now) and 228 all winter so we will see next week if the trend down is starting.  Really low body fat for me too...10-11%.  Losing will be hard without losing muscle.  Doing strength exercises with kettle bells.  Getting instruction one time a week.  Flexibility way better already, core feeling tighter, arms and legs stronger.  Going to stick with the current plan.

That's great! I had non-paleo day on Saturday when the Niners were playing.  Got so excited about the Niners winning that I ate all the stuff I'm not supposed to.  LOL. But I'm back to my normal diet.

Day off today.  Rest and get ready for 3 consecutive days of hard workouts.

I did kettle bells a few years ago, then moved... nothing since. I really liked it, gave me a good stretch as I have incredibly tight shoulders and back. The squatting was great too, of course. No classes around here, maybe I'll get my own.

I am doing pretty good with getting in a short daily workout.  But I am not getting in a longer run-specific workout.  The only event I have scheduled is a 10K in May.  I need to get my distance back up.  And if I am going to do a tri this year, I had better knock the cobwebs off of my bike and also get in that pool again!  I have so far to go ....
