Having an internal debate on when to arrive.

If I arrive Friday I risk not sleeping well both of the two nights before the race. And I'd have to take a 1/2 day vacation. But I'd have more time to take things at a leisurely pace (but if it's hot out, I might regret being there so early).

If I arrive Saturday, I can't get in until afternoon due to the Iron Kids race, so risk being rushed with setting up camp, practice ride/run, athlete check in, expo, bike check in, dinner, BT gathering, race organizing before bed.

Just thinking out loud.

I haven't looked at the schedule for this year, but last year I arrived somewhere around 1:00 on Saturday and no issues with the Iron Kids race and access to the campground. From there I breezed through check-in, camp set up, and bike check in. The only thing I didn't do was a practice ride/run, unless you count a slow bike ride through the campground to check that my bike was in working order en route to checking it in. That still left me plenty of time until dinner.

The unknown variables are how long it takes to get through check-in and how long you'd like to do a practice ride or run.(?)

Just noticed they finally have the 2012 athlete guide up.  I'm reading it now.

http://ironmankansas.com/files/2010/11/Kansas-70.3_FINAL_ACE.pdf

I just sent them an email today asking when it was going to be up! (they said tomorrow) I also asked about the trash drop zones on the bike course. Like you, I've never done this distance, so I wanted to get a handle on how long I had to fill and drop a bottle. There response was "I believe you will have approximately 100 yards on either side of the aid station for the trash zones." Went to the pool (Dr disapproved) with my giant scabbed over lip (it's so pretty) this am, felt good to get in the water, but my right arm (tetanus shot) was still sore. Trying to decide if I should use or not use my wetsuit for my two OWS, before next weekend (I've tried it on, but never swam in it), given that I may or may not be able to use it on race day. Thoughts?

You absolutely should swim with it on at one of your swims for sure.  Its different than swimming without one, thats for sure.

Also, if the water is palatable I'd recommend doing a swim without a wetsuit as well.

Which swims are you doing?  My wife and I will be at the TNT swim at Lake Manawa Saturday morning.

Another thing to remember for the race.  Its wetsuit legal up to 76 degrees, but you can still wear the suit up to 81 degrees and it just makes you ineligible for awards and the championship slots in Vegas.  If you're not competing for either of those spots then I'd plan on wearing it.

If the race is wetsuit legal and you don't wear one you are giving up a competitive advantage to every other athlete who is wearing one.

If it isn't wetsuit legal but wetsuit "permitted" then that is up to you. I personally will always wear a wetsuit even in a sprint if it is deemed to be under the cut off.

I elected sooner rather than later (Fri afternoon), but this is my 1st HIM and 1st time to the park, so I want/need plenty of time beforehand. Of course, to cover my bases I have a hotel room and campsite. Will sleep in the hotel Fri night to get a good night sleep (read it's 2 nights before a race a good night's sleep that's most important, not the night before), then I'll sleep in the tent Sat night and have my husband and kids slept in the hotel. I know you've done this race several times, so maybe Sat is ok? Also, maybe keep an eye on the forecast to help your decision? I've started looking/obsessing and right now forecast is hot (90) w/ a chance of showers Friday night/Saturday day.

Hi Ali,  Everyone thinks differently on the wetsuit thing so my 2 cents.. If you are ok with adding a few minutes to your swim and already comfortable without maybe that's the way to go.  Something else to consider is the temperature. The air temp and water temps will be high and your body can get pretty warm with the insulation of the suit.  I'm more sensitive to the heat though so that makes it a factor for me.  Hope this didn't add one thing to consider..  Good luck.

Good luck to all...I've done this race the past 2 years and hate that im missing it this year but will be back next year...my experience is to get there Friday to get your items taken care of then practice swim on sat morning..for those that haven't done the race before you cannot swim in the race location...you have to go to the beach which you pass on the way but just a heads up about that. Two years ago it was 100 on sat and the water was magically wetsuit legal on race morning and last year I think I would have drowned without the wetsuit....horrible swim conditions last year. For those that are camping this is a great venue for the family / friends to watch and all around great race. Good luck to everyone and hopefully it won't be too hot!!!

Looking like it will be calm winds anyway on Sunday. But yeah, looking warm.

Thankfully, I missed a bunch of training in May so there's almost a 100% chance my day will be slow and pain filled. Laughing

Hopefully I get to meet some of you on Saturday. I don't think I'll be around that evening but I'll wear something bright at bike check in. Or maybe I can have a BT shirt here by then?

I am going to quit checking the forecast! Everytime I look they add 2 or 3 degrees to the high temp (right now Weather Channel shows a high of 93*) with 13 mph SSE winds. It's going to be a challenging day so make sure you are well hydrated and you slow down a little.

Hey Lisa,

Just go to Free State Friday night and get so hemmered you'll pass out once your head hits the pillow!  There must be some type of booze that puts you to sleep

Just wanted to pop in and say Hi.  I did the race in 2008 (the thunderstorm year), and signed up again this year.  Looking at the maps, it looks like the course has changed a bit since then.

Should be a great race -- Good luck everybody!

The only problem I have is that I can't slow down...  I'm so screwed.  lol

C'mon guys--why waste all your energy fretting about the weather? You're not going to change it one iota. Just focus on what you can control--drink plenty of fluids this week, eat smart, rest well, and kick butt on race day. Let the weather worry about YOU.

Same here--I rode the course earlier this year and I would say it's about as challenging as the 2008 course. Save some on the bike for when you have to go back up the "Dam hill" at mile 50... it's a booger. In my lowest gear I could only muster 6.0mph up that thing.

I wouldn't say that I am fretting about the weather per se, but it does have an impact on the race and on race strategy. You would be foolish to show up and not take the weather into consideration when planning race strategy or nutrition/hydration.

Jayhox - 2012-06-04 11:12 AM Reece -- Are you in?  Going to go Wellington all over everyone's a$$es?

No can do.  Actually I can do the bike and I'm waiting for a reply from RD on whether or not I can switch from individual entry to relay.  I think I can wrangle up a swimmer and a runner and pay the difference in reg. fees.  I've paid $225 and relay is $375 so I'm hoping I can pay $150 and us three can go to packet pickup as a relay team.

Does anybody know if you can do this?  The website FAQ list talks about switching from relay to individual but I didn't see anything about switching from individual to relay.

To me this should be easy.  I don't care about getting 3 T-shirts, 3 sets of SWAG etc. just want to have a fun day racing.

Did swim 1600 yds this morning one-armed with lots of kicks, left arm tired Tongue out

Go the schwaggle deal for Branson though, my new A-Race.

So it looks like we should do the swim without wetsuits, but then put them on for the first hour of the bike!

Still can't decide if RR will find a way to make this wetsuit legal. I can't imagine the true temp of the lake will be anywhere close. My only concern will be overheating in the wetsuit on a day this hot even if it Is legal. Tough choices.

Yeah I'm bringing the sleeveless wetsuit (I have one of each) even though it chokes me more.

At KC Tri I wore the full sleeve and my arms hurt so bad - felt like they were attached to rubber bands and couldn't get the full range of motion - constant tension in the arms. Not sure if I just ignored that in the past or if it's gotten worse?

That plus the warmer water, I think I'll be glad to be sleeveless.

I never said you shouldn't take it into consideration. Just said that sitting there worrying about it wasn't doing you (the corporate "you") much good. The weather will be what the weather is. Hopefully by this stage in the game you've worked out in all kinds of weather conditions and are prepared for whatever it is. It's Kansas. It gets hot. The wind blows. The weather changes quickly with little warning. I know, huge lightning bolts of information--you're welcome

I have one of the "illegal" speed suits that I wore this morning for training. I didn't get as hot in it as I do in a wetsuit. I might go that direction if it is wetsuit legal. Of course all of this internal debating might and probably will be worthless.
