Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN Kathy - GREAT point! :-) I've read this quote somewhere..."The swim is the toughest of all three. You stop running, you walk. You stop pedaling, you coast. You stop swimming, you drown." Plus there's a LOT more human contact in the swim vs the other two. You can't just "stop", like in the other two sports. While Running is a higher impact sport, but heck, you can just walk. Swimming, you can't... So I do share your sentiments. People shouldn't get mad at those that are holding on the kayaks/rafts. There's a difference if they're holding on to it for every 100 meters, especially in a Sprint, or has noodles. That's a bit "uh, yeah, you really should know how to swim". |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN TGIF!!! Good comments on the swim changes at some of the IM events. I guess those that are against the changes fear that their own accomplishments will be diminished somehow by these. I don't get it, but I have never done this to compare myself to others. I do it to continually improve against myself. If the changes make the sport safer, then it should be done. I like that they are trying a few different approaches to see what is most effective. |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN Happy Friday everyone! I had a great swim this morning--did a 1 mile test again, and took another 56 seconds off my time! I am working to get it under 30 minutes so that I feel confident to reach my goal of 1hr15m in the Ironman. This morning I did 30:24...so I'm making progress! Woo hoo! I am doing a sprint tri this Sunday just for fun ("C" race), as I have a 4 hour bike (followed by a 30 minute brick run) tomorrow. With that said, I'll still go all-out in the sprint, because it's so much shorter than the other two races I've done this year why not? It's a 16 mile bike, which plays to my strength, so we'll see. I won't have a problem with recovery after a short race, so we'll see how it goes. The Ironman swim start talk is funny to me, because since my first IM will be Louisville, and it has the only time-trial style swim start on the circuit, it really doesn't apply. We still have to line up and jump off a dock one or two at a time for the start. Everyone gets the full allotted swim time (2:40 or whatever it is), but still has to finish by midnight, so those starting in the back do not actually get 17 hours. It is what it is!! Have a great weekend everyone! |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN I've never done a full IM or had a mass start. I'm about 5 years into this sport and it's taken me this long to have the confidence to not start behind or on the outside of my wave! A mass start has always petrified me. I don't crit race because I don't enjoy the bump and grind, and I mostly quit MTB racing for the same reasons. At the end of the day I do this for my own health and to challenge myself. I'd still do the races if it was a mass start. But, I'd enjoy them more if they were broken up. Not to mention, the added safety getting rid of the mass start IMO is a huge factor. If it's safer it should be done. IMO it only affects the times of the overly aggressive who like to take out other people to better there own position coming out of the water. That part of our sport is not safe, and really has no place anyway. Times should speak for themselves....period |

For me, last big brick tomorrow (embrace the brick!) before the race. Train well! No race/big rides for me this weekend. However, my mom from NJ will be in town for a week. Last I saw her was at my wedding. My stepfather asked her what she wanted for Valentine's Day, and she immediately said VEGAS! The coolest thing is, they're getting free flight (frequent flier miles) and free hotel room (they always get comped...don't ask. :-D), so they're basically here for free, and I get a cleaner house to boot. LOL! I just have a couple rides this weekend, including a coaching session. Since I'm paying for it, I truly hope that I get a LOT out of it. This is the first time that I've been coached for cycling, so I could really use some pointers on how to be a much more efficient rider, faster, and better climber. It's different than being actually coached vs. hearing from your cycling friends because of all the advice they give me. |

Todd I routinely get foot/toe cramps when swimming. I usually will throw a pull buoy between the legs till it lessens. Other than that I just suck it up. Luckily never biking. I did get a quad cramp a few weeks ago while I was jumping out of the pool - left me near tears on the pool deck. my quad was sore for 2 days afterward. Edited by robingray_260 2013-05-10 11:29 AM |

Champion 7136 Knoxville area | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - OPEN For the most part I am for the changes they are trying in mass starts. The people it hurts the most are your true FOP Age Groupers, reason being that if you are fighting for podium spots in a big race then it's important to know that the other guy/gal in your age group you are trying to pace is going from the same start time as opposed to having started 5 minutes ahead/behind you in the swim. For your average age grouper, this isn't an issue of course. I personally think that AG Waves are *usually* the best way to go unless it's totally unrealistic logistically. I also think it would be smart to bring back an "Elite" wave of sorts for those faster AGers to compete in, although I understand why it didn't work out in the past as well. (And I don't have a good solution to that problem) As for safety... in the water it should be priority #1. I think I'm a fairly strong (by triathlete standards anyways) swimmer who has had no problem with OWS (up to 2.4 miles)... yet I was pretty glad a paddleboarder was near me in Florida last month when I became sick (saltwater) and needed to pull out. I didn't panic, or even need help back to shore, but if I had, I'm glad someone was there.

Just my $.02 Can't argue with your thoughts Chris. Truthfully, having done both a tight swim course in Lake Placid, and a wide open one in Florida, I don't think there can be a one size fits all solution. In both races though, I was passed by the pro's doing their second lap towards the end of my first. I don't think on a course like Lake Placid this will change things much once the final swimmers hit the water. I do believe that they had to try some things though to find what works best. |

I've been dealing with PF since the summer...gotten to the point where the good days outnumber the bad, so--it doesn't bother me on the run, so I ice, roller at night to break it up and just try to get by. I know a lot of people have had success with ART and also some sort of laser therapy. First 60 miler of the season - felt really good. Hoping to get my long run in tomorrow so I can sleep as long as humanly possibly on Mother's Day --- then go shopping for new shoes....racing shoes, of course!!! I think it really depends on what you like. I really like Ghost and PureConnect. No idea the difference between the PureConnect and PureFlow. I found that I do way better on minimalist/zero heel drop shoe vs anything else. Ghost is what I used for my half marathon, and the balls of my foot hurt really bad after 8 miles. I tend to switch between the two because I still have some life left in the Ghost, and they last longer than PureConnect. Any races, long runs, I'm putting on my Pure Connect. I've tried Saucony Kinveras 2 before PureConnect (4mm drop), and they wore out much sooner than the PC, and I'm not a high mileage runner! |

I ran the HM in them and more than likely will run the HIM in them next weekend. The key is to go to a store that video's your gait to make sure you get a pair that fits you.
