everlong - 2013-05-06 3:38 PM So I just crossed over 1,000 miles using three different pairs of Kivanas which have a 4mm toe-to-heel drop. The Virrata is built the same way as Kivanas and just came out with a zero drop. I've done some mileage in pure minimalist shoes and they're fine for a beach or trail but for me too little for the road. I was wondering if anybody is using a similar product that's more of a modified speed shoe than a true minimalist shoe and opinions on the zero drop in general. The other upside to the Virrata is being an ounce lighter. I think having put in so many miles with a quasi minimalist shoe already the transition should be easy.

I've been running on the Virratas (swapping them in and out with my Kinvara 3s).  There was a slight transition (a little calf pain, which is normal when decreasing the drop).  I find them to be super comfortable and I like the fact that the Virratas are built on a fairly wide shoe bed to help disperse shock.

I don't have anything to add about the Virratas, but I want to ask how much calf pain is normal when decreasing drop?  I switched to the Mirages from the Ghosts.  I'm only using the Mirages for shorter, easier runs.  When is it safe to try them out on a longer or faster run?  I don't want to get hurt.

You shouldn't feel calf "pain," it should be "soreness."

What really matters is the distance not the intensity so if they feel good on short, easy runs, you should be able to "upgrade" to longer runs (even if they are more intense).

I guess I should have clarified.  It's not pain so much as tightness.  My right calf has a hard, little knot in it.  I'm going to try to work it out tonight with the stick.  I foolishly wore the new shoes without socks my second time out so now I'm left with blisters on both heels.  Overall they feel decent though.

Jen try a little dog tennis ball or a lacrosse ball to hit those tough spots in the calf. I find it works better than the stick sometimes depending on where the knot is. If I find the video link of how to do I will post.

I love doing this. You can also take it and use light pressure on top around the shin area.

Thank you for this, Larkin.  I will try it today.

1:40 run done for the day.  I felt great this morning!!!!

I have been ravenous lately, eating anything and everything in the kitchen. I made BBQ pork ribs in the slow cooker yesterday (kids swim practice, soccer games, and other activities require slow cooker some days).  We had a few leftover ribs.  Guess who was shoving pork ribs in her mouth at 9 p.m. last night?  Seriously.  I felt like a kid sneaking the last cookie out of the cookie jar.  I can't get enough protein lately so I'm going with it.

Me too. Smile Grilled last night. But I was eating them at 1a...washing them down with a bowl of cereal.

Maybe we can convince Larkin, Matt, and maybe even Kristen to come up and all go for a ride some weekend...

Pretty good chance I could be convinced to come up there for a weekend ride.

Pool swim this morning, treadmill run this evening for me.

Mmmmm..... ribs.

So for mobility and stuff like what Jen is experiencing check out www.mobilitywod.com.  It's good stuff and something I personally need to make more time for.  I strongly dislike crossfit for triathletes BTW, but this site is good

1:30 of over/unders on the bike and a 25 min easy jog.  Body didn't want to go which is normal for a taper, but frustrating nonetheless.

The water temps in the ocean here in Maine remain in the 50s to low 60s in August. In some spots, its painful (to me) to even wade up to my ankles. My next race is in a month and the swim is in a lake. It wasn't too long ago there was ice on it.

Yow!  I know it's beautiful up there, but that'd be tough for me.  I think I can probably work to get used to temps in the 60-65 range, but stuff that's colder than that would be, um, challenging.  Are you going to do it with just a regular full wetsuit (i.e., no cap and no wetsuit shoes)?

Jen, if you're looking for someone to keep you from eating those ribs at 9 PM, I'll volunteer to come over and eat them.  Purely as a public service, you understand.

Scott, why don't you like crossfit for triathletes?

Since I started in on this stuff I've wondered about that as well.  I mean I'll go scuba diving when the water temp is low, but I'm also in a 7 mil wetsuit.  It wouldn't be even close to ideal to swim in though.

I agree with Texas Scott on this one completely. He's written the article, so I'll let him explain.  The only thing I would add is I don't like crossfit for traithletes in season training for an event.

Here I wrote an article on it:

http://sonicendurance.com/node/69

In summation Crossfit makes you better at Crossfit.  In their mission statement it basically says it makes you great at being a jack of all trades yet a master of none.  There are very specific skill sets for a triathlete and Crossfit does a poor job of hitting any of them.  I think it's a very good option for the general couch going public to get into fitness.  It's family atmosphere, it has fast results, and done correctly it's a ball busting workout.

Swim for me this morning and then swimming lessons.

I am working with a marine who is taking the test to be special ops diver and he needs to be able to swim a 500 breast stroke in less than 14 minutes.

OK.  I forgot to hit this.  Off season, to add muscle and control/fix body composition Crossfit is a good option.

That's pretty cool. I can't do the back stroke or butterfly to save my life and I'm only average doing free but I've always had a great breast stroke and if I built up my breast volume I could pull this off. I could keep the pace for a hundred right now but would fade fast as breast might work out to 300 yards of my weekly volume as it stands.

30 minutes recovery ride on the trainer, 2000 yards in the pool, 2 mile recovery run and a half hour of core work in the books.

I was training a Marine for special forces selection a couple months ago.  Actually he's off grid now testing.  Anyway their protocols are nuts.  I was just handling his distance running side, but he would do rucks with a 50 lbs pack at sub 10 min miles, he'd spend tons of time treading water in full fatigues, plus lifting and sharpshooting practice.  How his body didn't fall apart, well it did towards the end, is beyond me.

While my training has just begun, you all are mid-season. I am going to be ready to roll in the fall. I am just dreading the cicadas that will be here any day now...

Came home to two of them on my front door yesterday.  Honestly I don't mind the sound at all, reminds me of growing up as a kid traipsing through the woods exploring.

Speaking of which, does anybody have any suggestions of places to do long rides in the DC-MD-VA area with little-to-no cars? We considered the Cresent Trail, but it gets very crowded on weeks, which impairs our need for speed!

Welcome, Colleen!  There are loads of good ones in Western Montgomery County (around Poolesville and Sugarloaf), and even more up around Frederick.  That's what my favorite workout is - like Jen, I like to just ride long and zone out.  The Potomac Pedalers website has an online library, but they require membership for access.  If you want to send me your e-mail address, I'll e-mail you some.

Maybe we can convince Larkin, Matt, and maybe even Kristen to come up and all go for a ride some weekend...

That would be cool I could probably do that as long as it is not Soccer season.

1:35 on the bike of over/unders as well. 25 min z2/z1 run later tonight. Love this run as it get the muscles loosened up to do some good stretching/rolling before bed. I will throw in some core work as well I am sure.

As of this past fall I train year around. I like what Southern Scott said about crossfit or something similar to help with muscle tone/weightloss. I would love to think about focusing on more strength training in the offseason while still keeping the core fitness gains from a good season. I think it would also depend on when and what race you are training for.
