Jason-fantastic accomplishments by your son. Scores like those with good grades will lead to many great opportunities. The next couple of years will be exciting, nerve racking and rewarding. Been down this road recently with my son and know way more about the process than I ever wanted to.

Jason - congrats to you and your son! That's really fantastic

Rene - that's really scary! I couldn't consider infinit after knowing this could happen. Sounds like you were much nicer about it than I would have been.

Bryan - YAY NEW BIKEY!!!! ENJOY~

Happy Monday - or as I like to call it, 2 day work week with Wednesday off!

Have a good day

My only problem with it (other than the horrid chalky, won't mix up powder and the 1/4 of the scoop that stays in your bottle rather than in your body and wastes $$) is that from the literature I've read, in order for it to really be effective, you've got to commit to a low carb (think Paleo) diet. With UCan, from what I've read, carbs/sugars are bad, and if you still consume sugars/carbs in your regular diet, you're not going to have the best experience with UCan. I love my grains and red potatoes.

Discuss, please.

I am a carb fiend. But, as I said before, I don't use UCAN like they would suggest it should be used. I mix it with Infinit so I am getting a lot of fast acting glucose from the Infinit but also the long acting starch from UCAN. I don't know what it would be like if I only used UCAN.

FWIW my coach does race using UCAN only (at least on the bike as far as I know). He is not a low carb/paleo type of guy. He always comments about how few calories he needs to take in during the race using UCAN.

I in no way, shape or form think UCAN is some sort of miracle nutrition for racing. I really believe that you need to find something that your stomach tolerates enough that you can take in 4-6 calories/kg/hour while on the bike. If UCAN works, great. But, there are a lot of other electrolyte solutions that will likely work just as well.

I really believe that going with an all liquid nutrition plan has made much more difference than what the actual liquid is.

Jason...thanks for your thoughts. I really do need to try out a variety of things during the off season to determine what, exactly, I can tolerate. The dilemma is that my training volume in January isn't nearly what it is in July. I felt good using Infinit on the bike during the HIM, but once I got about 4 miles into that run, anything sweet made me want to throw up (hence my switch to pretzels and water after mile 4).

I just finished up today's run (just over 5 hilly miles). I really wish the first 2 miles would feel as good as the last two do. I find the first 20 minutes of every run to be horrifyingly agonizing.

I'm starting a strength program today that I'd done several 90 day 'rounds' of in years past called ChaLean Extreme. In my 2 years of endurance training, I'm finding that I'm slowly putting on weight even though I'm putting in hours and miles of exercise. I learned years ago that to lose weight (and I lost about 50 pounds 5 years ago) I simply have to lift weights. So, I'm going to do the 3 strength days of the program each week and use my S/B/R for the cardio portion of the program. Plus, the strength training will probably help with the upper body fatigue I experience on the bike.

Jason--you have quite an impressive son.  WOW.  I think he can write his ticket to any school.  Hopefully he'll find one that fits his long term career goals while still allowing for some good socialization.  That was my goal!  WIth Madison in my backyard, it was a really easy choice.  Of course, I didn't have a near perfect SAT or the  money to go to some really BIG school.

Nancy and Jason (and Renee)--I don't restrict carbs in my daily life or during training, but try to be at least somewhat conscious about what I am shoving in the pie hole post workouts.  I've read Seebohar's books and done some testing with him to find my MET point.  As a strict runner, I ate very little CHOs during training, but failed when trying to do that during marathons.  It wasn't until I fixed the mix so to speak that I had the energy I needed to BQ.  Not that it was the only reason for the BQ.  So for me, I'll stick with what i know works, concentrated Infinit on the bike, etc.   The thought of choking down something that isn't palatable during an IM seems like a recipe for disaster (for me).  I'm always interested in what others are doing.

Surgery is scheduled for Paul tomorrow morning.  The surgeon is going to try to do the reconstruction of the wrist with just pins and if that doesn't work they will open up the area and insert a metal plate.  Amazing what they can do these days.

With University of Michigan in my backyard I hope the choice is as easy. I hope he gets in and that he then fits in. It would make everyone's life easier if he stayed near home for undergrad. Then if he wanted to go far, far away for grad school he will have had a few years of growing up behind him. I will support him wherever he goes but I hope it is nearby.

I don't blame you for not changing your nutrition plan. If I didn't have a whole case of the stuff in my basement I am not sure that I would go out and buy a bunch now. It is working and I don't mind it but I think I would likely be just as satisfied with double concentrated Infinit (although I would have to remove some of the caffeine I suspect).

I hope your husband's surgery goes well. If they offer him a nerve block I would take it. It will make the first 12-24 hours much more tolerable postoperatively. If he does get a nerve block, make sure he is taking his pain medications regularly until the block wears off, because it will, and if he has no pain meds on board it gets really miserable, really quick.

Pretty slow day on the boards. I swam a 100 yard TT in 1:15 this morning which is my fastest ever. Slow, steady progress. Off for a short run now. I must have run too hard yesterday because I am sore today.

Do you have room for one more?  You guys look great for me and the others who've been in seem like they'd be good matches.  One guy is planning to do the Calgary 70.3...I am registered for that race too!  My story, if you'll squeeze me in...:

I was a college gymnast, did marathons for a while in my 30's, was told "no more running" by a nasty doc...something about arthritis and bone on bone...so I stopped (see "weight" section), then in the fall of 2012, I found out that you only have to run twice a week for tris, so I signed up for a sprint with 4 weeks to prepare and survived it.  The season here was over, so I did the natural thing...signed up for the Lake Stevens 70.3 the next year.  I dropped 50 lbs and did two sprints, two Olympics, and the half last summer.  I did all that with the help of an awesome coach with Training Peaks, who I can no longer afford, but who I still love (she was really great...).  Now, it is on to the Calgary 70.3 and a few races in between...but I'm all alone this time and well, that is scary.  Just need accountability, a few laughs, and the knowledge that someone is out there who knows more than I do and can answer questions!

Family: Married to a wonderful man who thinks the only thing worse than being a spectator for a marathon is being a spectator for a triathlon, but fully supports me being a participant.  Have 3 kids, two still at home, and a menagerie of animals...which need not be listed individually - no one has that kind of time.)

Training: Was up to 10 hours or so last July, prior to my becoming a sloth again.  (Husband had some health issues...stress + work + busy kids + commute all crashed together for the perfect mash up of excuses for me to get out of shape and yucky.)  Starting back in now...about 4-5 hours/week.

2014 races: I'm planning a sprint in March, an Olympic in May, a half marathon in June, Calgary in July...then maybe an Olympic in August and Black Diamond in the fall?

Weight: Depends on the day....Lost 50 lbs going into last season's races....  Now am up again, about 30..but, committed to head back down.  Sigh.  Turning 50 the end of January.  I want to not feel frumpy at 50...at least not the entire year.

What makes me a good mentee? I don't expect or need to podium in this sport, I keep my sense of humor, I am GRATEFUL, I will love to absorb any and all counsel, I'll try anything, I'm competitive - with myself, I will persevere through crappy occurrences...I don't give up, I live near IM CDA, so will happily offer lodging or tips for where to go before or after the race, ummmmmm....I'm a nice person?

If you can't fit me in, I'll totally understand.  Maybe you could just hang onto this and if someone drops out, consider me at that point?

Thanks so much!

Hi, Erika!

It's New Year's Eve Day. Got in a 3.5 mile run with my running ladies. This weekend we're doing a hilly 10 mile race on Saturday, and a 2.8 mile trail run on Sunday.

I'm enjoying this pick up in running with a new running group. Nowhere near as challenging as my previous running group, but I enjoy watching the ladies return from running hiatuses.

I have not been in pool or ocean since my November triathlon. Eek! I have 2.5 months to whip the swim back into shape for Xterra.

I have some goals for 2014.

Home improvements
Get to an easier to move amount of body weight
Have a better relationship with food

Bryan- Congrats on the new wheels. Doesn't matter how old you get it's always fun to play with new toys.

Jason- Great news about your son. Coming from someone feeling the sting of tuition bills, I hope he gets plenty of scholarships.

I hope everything goes well for your Hubby.

Some great info. on the nutritional aspect. I used Infint in my only HIM last year. I like the taste and really want to stick with it but unfortunately after a couple hours I feel really bloated and let's say for lack of a better term, more than a little gassy. I want to stay with the liquid nutrition so this year It's back to the drawing board.

I know it's a triathlon group but what do you folks recommend for marathon nutrition? I know it is very individual but are there any general guide lines? In training right now I don't use anything on runs under 12 miles. On my longer runs I've been taking a gel (100 cals.) every 6 miles and wash it down with either G2 or water depending on what I feel like carrying. I am tolerating it very well and am not having any GI issues at all. I'm just a little worried I may not be getting enough calories. I don't feel like I'm bonking at all just really have no clue. If it matters I'm looking at 3:40 to 3:45 as a goal time. Thanks for any input.

Jason-good job on the sub 1:15....next up 1:00!

Suzy-hope all goes well with the surgery.

QUESTION! With the end of the year only a day away its time to reflect a bit. What triathlon related accomplishment are you most proud of in 2013? It can be losing weight, a new run PR etc. but needs to be related, in some way, to triathlons or training. Does not have to be some huge thing. It may be the first time you were able to run a mile without walking, completing your first triathlon, or whatever. Nothing to big or small. For instance...for Jason it may be getting his running shoe collection into double figures (I suspect I'm underestimating there )

I'll hold off on my response until I give it a bit more thought. Have a good night all. I'm up early to swim as the pool closes at noon tomorrow and thats the only time I can get there.....the dreaded early morning swim.

Already had a personal best last week in the running department (best was at the 1.5 mile mark, also the first time I did 2 miles) and I'll be on the bike for the first time in nearly a month in all likelihood, so I'll have to get back to you on that Randy.

FYI: The terms "running" and "walking" are interchangeable for me; I don't want to have to breakdown the broken down time splits on Strava to deduce the difference; fairly certain the time/distance ratio will make it clear which direction it was going.

Erika, welcome. There is always room for one more.

Kevin, in every open marathon I have run I have carried 3 to 4 gels with me and taken one every 45 minutes. I time them so I am eating them as I near an aid station so I can wash them down with water. In IM marathons I just take coke or electrolyte drink at each aid station. Either way I have not run out of energy. I bonked many years ago on a long training run. I pretty much ended up laying on the side of the road for about 45 minutes. I don't ever want to do that again.

Jason, congrats on the PR  -- well done! You mention slow, steady progress... but did anything else lead up to your breakthrough?  Better technique? Change in workout routine? Lots and lots of hard work? Whatever you are doing, it's working -- keep it up!

Most proud of: my 5K PR at the beginning of December of 26:34.

I started running in the fall of 2011 because "every one else was doing it" and I hated standing around waiting. So I did a few 5ks (times between 28-30 and change). Then in early 2012 I started to have on and off leg pain which went all the way until July when finally went to the Dr and the MRI showed a stress fracture. It took a LONG time to heal and then I also had tibial tendonitis. I found a PT that is AWESOME and he helped me graston and PT that tendonitis away. So now it's mid summer 2013 and I'm FINALLY beginning to run without pain. I finished 2 half marathons and finally felt good but I could never get my 5k time down below 28.

I guess it just all came together at the December 5K (my last of the season). So yeah, that's it

And Jason - that's a crazy fast swim. I'm in a funk lately and I can't seem to get out of the house at 5:30 to head to the cold pool - today included At least I'm only working a half day and can swim after work.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy new year!!

Good morning All-

Been a crazy couple days trying to get end of year stuff going at work and I have been pretty unavailable to check the posts here.

Jason...congrats to your son! That is a huge accomplishment and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that he gets in and stays in Ann Arbor. My daughter ended up at the "other" school and it is a bit of a sticking point in our family.

All...This nutrition talk has me once again realizing how little I know about this game and how much I have to learn in a short time period. (Whose idea was it to sign up for an HIM again?!?)

Had my surgical follow up yesterday and eh seemed very pleased. Stitches out and cleared to resume biking on trainer as long as there is no pain. Planning a good hour to hour and half ride tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes. Unfortunately, he said I can't get in the pool until next week so I had to move my swim lessons back a week. Was a bit bummed about that but I'm trying to follow instructions for a change!

Running integration is going to be painfully slow. He said next week I can do 2-3 elliptical sessions of 10-15 minutes. If those go well (no pain) I can replace one of them the following week with a 5 minute run! Really, 5 minutes, once?!? Ughhh, hardly worth putting my shoes on. If that goes ok, then I can do 5 minutes 2-3 times the following week and then I can start adding 1-3 minutes each week until my runs get up to 45-60 minutes. I haven’t looked at a calendar yet but that seems like a very long time before I am back to any significant mileage.

Oh well, it’s what I’m stuck with and I will do my best to follow the plan and avoid injury.

I don't have any triathlon related accomplishments from last year (obviously) but I have been putting some thought into what I want to accomplish this year. I will likely post up some thoughts tomorrow, mostly to put them out there and make myself more accountable to them.

Have a great day everyone and a happy start to the new year!

Wow, the group moves fast. My apologies for not keeping up, crazy time of year with a 2 year old and such.

I really like the race nutrition talk. I have to start tinkering with it since up until now I've only done sprints but next year am expanding to Olympic and HIM distance. What did everyone start with? I have a pretty strong stomach overall. I've done simple bars (Nature Valley, Cliff) on longer rides and never had an issue with my stomach. I love the idea of solid food but if I have to do liquid I guess I should try soon. Is there a good off the shelf brand I can try instead of dedicating a full order of UCAN/Infinit when I don't really know what I need yet? I like how you can customize your product with them, but until I know what I need/want it's probably not necessary.

Nutrition-I have used a variety of products. For a long time I used Accelerade and Accel Gels. Worked fine and Accelerade has a 1 to 3 protein to carb ratio I believe. Company literature said that is ideal for endurance training. I liked it fine and never had any problem with it. Not a huge fan of Heed but I've won a few cans of it and used it in training. Seems to work fine but not a fan of the taste. Right now I am using FLUID brand sports drinks and Gu Gels. Have used FLUID off and on and have been using it consistently over the past year....mostly because I get a good deal on it. I don't mix it full strength unless I am trying to maximize calories per bottle in a race. I like the taste and its pretty mild.

On race day I pretty much stick to fluids and gels. If I have a long training ride I might take a Honey Stinger Waffle or two for a little solid food. Easy to carry and seem to digest easily as well. Regular old store bought peanut butter crackers work for me as well. Its my go to easy snack food and I guess my stomach is just accustom to them.

WOOHOO! Positive-last swim of the year for 2013 done! Negative-2014 will include lots more swimming. 2013 swimming total: 473,584 yards....a little over 269 miles.....microscopic improvement in swim speed   Time well spent? Debatable.

I'm finding this nutrition discussion interesting.  As I step up to the Oly distance this year and plan to be competitive, I'm going to need to figure this out at some point.  I know with the Oly we're only talking 2:20 - 2:40, so it's not quite as important as the HIM and certainly the IM, but I know I'm going to need a nutrition plan better than "take a couple sips of Gatorade on the bike".

Carry on.

If we're talking purely taste (and not necessarily performance) Heed is definitely a little sweet for my taste - but I love fizz and perpetuem. And Hammer Gel Montana Huckleberry flavor!

Maybe we should divide the discussion into a few more sections:

great performance/mediocre taste
great performance/great taste (I bet this list will be small)
poor performance/great taste

poor performance/great taste-this one is easy....cold beer(s) post race!!!! I'm a big proponent of post race carbo loading. I try to focus mostly on liquids for those sessions
