Acupuncture doesn't hurt at all! Not one bit. Trust me.

And as for shin massage--what do you think the "splinting" is of? Not the bone--its the muscle that splints. So, anything you can do to take care of the trigger points and inflammation in them will benefit you. And I'm not offering medical advice here, but if I were you, I'd go to Walmart and get some MSM, which stands for methylsulfanylmethane and is a NATURAL anti-inflammatory that you can get over the counter. You need to take 6000mg per day for at least 10 days to be totally effective. Also, fish oils, or EPA-DHA, for anti-inflammatory help. And it does wonders for your brain, too! Not to mention bringing up your good cholesterol. But, like I said, I'm not offering medical advice here.......(I am a chiropractor, but notice I didn't even suggest you see one) Although you probably should.....

And it seems fate and destiny are pushing you to do the whole tri by yourself. So just roll with it!!

Hey Lil_Turtle - I've not had to fight with shin splints, although I've had IT band issues and cramping issues that seriously put a "cramp" in  my training and my racing, so I can certainly feel your frustration.  With that said, I see no problem with walking a 5k as long is it doesn't hurt you in the long term.  You said you've already paid the entry fee - I say go get your money's worth   There will be other races though.  Just take care of yourself and you'll get that 1st triathlon under your belt whether it's this one or another one later on.

L'il Turtle: Did I understand you right that this is your first tri? I agree with TriForrestTri that you should do the race now that you are registered. There is no shame in walking (take it from a 290 lb Clydesdale). Just set some race goals and do your best. The experience will be invaluable for your next race. Do this race just to get all your questions answered. Concentrate on other things like transitions or the swim or race nutrition, etc. Don't give up. When life gives you lemons, go on and make some lemonade!

Hey all,

how's the week going so far? As it's now tuesday, lets see people's plans:

Mon: Run moved it
Tues: Strength or run depending on how I'm feeling & weather
Weds: Rest?
Thurs: Run - 4 x 1M intervals with 5min recovery (Race pace) (9-10)
Fri: Swim: 40min continous pull (7-8), Run: 4M steady then 1M as hard as can (7-9)
Sat: Bike: 20M steady with 5 x 2min efforts at race pace (7)
Sun: Bike: 27.5M steady (7), Swim: 45min drills with 6 x 50m kick easy (4-5)
Mon: Run: 5K TT (10)

All of this is at the mercy of work (trying not to) and health as I'm feeling really run down and coldy (new word!). I'm going to be mainlining the VitC, echinacea, fluids and sleep for the next few days in an effort to get back to 100% ASAP.

Only five weeks to London Tri!!!!

I wish there were better answers regarding shin splints, but shin splints.. MTSS (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) are kind of a right of passage. I know few people who have not been affected by them in some way, mainly at the beginning of their running career. It's something you have to fight your way through, as opposed to avoiding what is causing them, and mostly what is causing them is impact. The best method to deal with them is ice, 2-3 times per day. Not a ice pack, but water, frozen in a dixi cup, then the cup is peeled back slightly and the ice applied by rubbing up and down on the affected area (the full length of the shin bone on the medial and lateral sides). As the ice melts, you peel back the cup, until it is gone. This reduces the swelling which causes the pain, and allows for faster recovery. As much as I have seen, and I have seen a lot, there is no other way around them. Your legs just need to get used to running. If you do this, and follow a running plan that increases gradually, then you will see that it is something you will overcome. There are literally 100's of thousands of others out there that got there the same way. Including myself.

Not yet but I fancy doing one before the end of the year. I'd say the most important things are fluids, food and friends to do it with IMO. Let us know how you get on and any lessons learnt

A full century is tough but not as tough as a marathon-IMHO, especially since you've already done a 70 miler.  As far as tips go, a century is a great place to get your nutrition dialed in.  You'll likely need to take some additional Gatorade/Accelerade/HEED or whatever you use in powder form because you'll be supporting yourself and you certainly don't want to run low on fuel.  This includes gels and maybe a couple Cliff Bars or PayDay bars if your stomach will take solid food.

You may also consider additional electrolytes in the form of salt tablets or endurolytes.  Even if you're not to the point of cramping, they can make an enormous difference in feeling like crap vs feeling fresh as a daisy.

If you're using a HR monitor, I'd  stay in zone 2 to keep from working your legs too hard at the beginning of the ride.  By the end of the ride, you'll wonder who's legs are attached to your body because they certainly won't feel like yours

Lastly, be sure to put on some sunscreen. You'll probably be sore the next day, so you don't want to be burnt too.

Ron,

Are you going solo or doing the Cartersville Century?  There are a bunch of us doing the Catersville Century.

Longest ride to date is 66 miles for me.

Great, thanks for the tips TriForrestTri.. I will listen to all of it, especially the additional enduralytes. I have a bunch of those and want to move into the thought process that I need to use them. I don't know why, but I fear putting a pill into my mouth, where I don't fear drinking fluids loded with the stuff. Do you have any suggestions on numbers of those to use over a period of time, such as 6 hour, pretty hot conditions etc..

J22.. yes, I am doing the Cartersville Century. I will be registering that morning.. 100 mile option. Tri Bike. Woo Hoo. I'll look for BT'ers there as nobody else I know will be doing it.

I had a decent race.. sprint tri. Could have done better. One of those races where you give all you have on that particular morning, but you know that had it been any other day, you could have given more. It was fun to just do a sprint again. Seemingly over before it started.

Anyone else?

Hey all,

Looks like I'm just about over this bug so I'm back training! I've had to rejig the ol training plan so here's what I've got planned for the rest of the week:

Thurs: R: 4M fartlek
Fri: S: 40min continous pull (7-8)
Sat: B: 20M steady with 5 x 2min efforts at race pace (8)
Sun: B: 27.5M steady (7) S: 45min drills with 6 x 50m kick easy (4-5)

Next week's the start of my final month before my A race so I'm going to be knuckling down. If anyone thinks I'm starting to slack off, not trying hard enough, making excuses or generally not giving it 100% then you have my permission to give me hell about it!

Well, I just love being allowed to use the word "fartlek" on here, as they forbid the words S*H*I*T and A *S * S, turning them to yellowbike and redbike respectively, in case no one else is as vulgar as me! So, FARTLEK, FARTLEK, FARTLEK! Ha! It just sounds like it should be one of those naughty words to me....... And Graycat, I call myself catwoman, you know, because I feel a bit like one in my wetsuit--and we all know how completely naughty and great with a whip she is......(pretty safe to flirt just a tiny bit with a fellow all the way across the ocean, right?) Actually, I just did my longest OWS to date and had one of those dark chocolate cookies and a Vault to drink, so I'm a wee bit on the euphoric side of things this morning----sorry

I think I"m overcoming that overtraining deal.......but my right hamstring feels like I did something to it on my midnight run the other night. Keeps feeling like there are rivers of sweat dripping down my leg, but it's dry, so it must be a tear internally that is bleeding internally. Not good...... I can walk on it fine, though, and just swam okay. Am going to weenie out and try the bike on trainer today in case it starts to hurt bad. Don't relish the thought of getting stuck 24 miles out with a BAD injury on the bike. Kind of a long walk back if my leg is in trouble. And it's not like I have anyone to come get me and my bike if I am in trouble. Better safe than sorry til I know how it really is....

Hey.. Hope everyone has a great weekend. If you are racing, good luck. If you are training, train hard, if you are training through a race.. like me.. then just enjoy it.
Greycat.. I'll inspire your log when you give me something to inspire you about. Lets see a decent workout. Above and beyond. Push the limits. When you line up for that race, you will think of all the training you have not been doing.. you don't want to feel regret that morning.
