Morning Rebs!  No swim today, but lots of work.  Got pulled into a new project.  Have critical deadlines looming next week, so my BT time may be pretty limited this week .

Swim planned for tomorrow...

Yeah, sure - that's what you said yesterday and you were on more than I was.

LMAO

my thoughts exactly!

Hi Kristen!

Hi Sal!

wow, check it out- reindeer really DO swim!

Hm. Looks more to me like they're WADING. They do seem to wade well, at least.

O.K....here's a SWIMMING pic...

caribo4.jpg picture by salparco

Are you SURE they're swimming? 'Cause I'm thinking that they're still wading....

Sheesh Dee!!!! You're relentless. Here's the link: http://www.mnh.si.edu/arctic/html/caribou_reindeer.html
Decide for yourself...the caption says Caribou SWIMMING...

Yep, I see the caption.... But it still looks to me like they're wading.... OK, here you go:

Why Reindeer Don't Fly:
http://www.abc.net.au/science/features/reindeer/default.htm

Pretty cool article explaining why Reindeer don't fly. LOL

It also says:
"Reindeer feet are also highly specialised. Their hooves are large and circular, and are effective tools for scraping snow from lichen. Because of their large size, the hooves act as kind of snowshoes in winter, preventing the reindeer from sinking into the snow. They are also effective paddles when the reindeer swim."

you forgot to mention the quote from the other article which states

"They are very strong swimmers and can move across wide rushing rivers and even the frozen ice of the Arctic Ocean!"

oh yeah - the reindeers are going to kick azz!

matt the lifeguard was there today.  he said that he had some snow trouble getting to work yesterday.  i laughed and said that was okay.

but then, just to see, i asked, "hows hector?"  and he said, "fine, i need to call him and get the other half....i mean, i don't know a hector.  i thought you said...lector, yeah, hannibal lector.  scary movie, gives me the creeps.  so you going to swim or what?"

that was weird.

Hiya Reindeer!

Beth (lastcall2003) I have just been speaking to Donto and he will get an 'official' spreadsheet to you for collecting team data probably in the next 24 hours.

I will start a Team Leaders thread as well for the check in at the end of the week... the reporting week starts Sunday and it would be great if we can have all the info in by Monday Pm please!

If you forget i will be posting reminders!

Happy Swimming

Anyone have any progress to report, swim wise? This thread is so quiet. I can hear the birdies and crickets chirping. C'mon, people. Show some life. Even if it is on topic!

okay, here goes....

chucktown iowa isn't excatly a bussling metroplis of industry and youth.  basically, it's a town where the surrounding farmers move into to run out the clock.  there are a couple factories that get families in, but i'd say the median age of this town is at least 60.  so, as you would imagine, the ymca isn't the flagship of the industry, but my work gives me a free membership, so i don't complain.

the pool is four lanes wide with a staircase thingy taking up one of them, leaving three lanes to do flip turns.  this doesn't matter to 90% because it is usually filled with people water walking.  i would say that only a small handful of the people actually swim and the water temp is akin to taking a bath.

this is not what i'm complaining about.  not it at all.  in fact, i like the old people shuffling about the place.  i pray that if i make it to their age, i can still walk under my own power let alone go to the y to work out.  you want to water walk?  fine by me, good for you.  my problem is with this lady yesterday.

with four lanes and no one realizing what circle swim means (no lane ropes either, btw) everyone kinda picks a spot and swims/walks back and forth.  the pool fills up quickly.  yesterday, there were five people in which meant now we have to swim between people.  i choose my lane and then asked politely, "is it okay if i swim between you two (another walker).  this gal responds, "i suppose" in a tone like i asked her for half of her sandwich (um, no, she wasn't eating in the pool.  bad analogy).  well, thank you very much, the queen of the pool is generous today!

and then every time i went past her in the deep end, she stopped and hugged the wall as if i was producing a devastaing tsunami and that she would hopelessly drown if she didn't take cover.  whatever dude, it just made me swim faster.

long story long, there you go.
