Girl Passing on Left - 2009-03-22 12:30 AM

So my dh and I get up to go do an early ride, we get all dressed, eat breakfast, fill our camelbaks, and bottles with cytomax, grab energy bars, put on my shoes, gloves, grab my sunglasses and WOULDNT YA KNOW IT! my durn helmet I won last weekend DOESNT FIT! boooooo hoooo! SOOOOO DISAPPOINTED! so, I go run....and my ipod seems to be acting up! I give it a WHACK and it seems to be ok again! so out the door I go...I hadnt even got down my porch steps when it turned off again! I dig it out of my pockets...stop my watch zero my watch out again and again battle with the ipod....WHACK WHACK and its working again...stand there shake it a little to see if it is a lose connection...seems ok...so I tuck it in my pocket in the rear of my running pants and take off running....I get about a mile into the run and DURN THING TURNS OFF AGAIN! and I will be darned if I am stopping again to fidget with it...so instead...i reach back and start whacking myself nothing...whack again..and just as it turns on I look over to see a group of firefighters looking at me and laughing - i was right in front of the firehouse and they were out cleaning a truck......TALK ABOUT A RED FACED MOMENT! they were probably wondering if I always spank myself when I run! OMG! I think it is time to replace my ipod and no more running past that firehouse...at least for a while!!!

LOL "giddy up and run mama"!!! what a way to move faster...a good spankin'!!! I will have a tough time not to giggle on my next ipod run.You are such a good mentor, trying new things so we can train betterLaughing

yup! it wasnt pretty! this is one of those....dont do as I do things!

I am willing to ridicule myself by slapping my a$$ if it makes me go faster (faster=9min/mile or less) besides, have you seen me in spandex...yup really willing for the fast run.

Good afternoon!

I haven't gotten on my bike yet. Spent the morning and early afternoon driving to and watching my daughter do her first dance competition. Then, it was straight from there to the airport to drop Michele off for a business trip. Finally home and gearing up for a trainer ride. I'll let you know how the new bike feels when I'm done.

Oh, by the way, whatever I said before about my wrist getting better, I take it all back! It's not swollen like before but it hurts just as bad. I don't know where this leaves me but I'm definitely not having surgery before the end of September when my tri season is over!

sux about your wrist! did you say surgery? hoping it heals and you will not have to...but what surgery would you have to have?

He said something about opening up the sheath or the channel that the tendon runs through and smoothing the edges if necessary. He said it's like a 20-25 minute procedure. I'm gonna go back and ask if PT or something else could help, or at least keep me going until after my tri season.

I got in about an hour on the tri bike on the trainer stand but it was spaced out over almost 2 hours. I was stopping like every 5 or 10 minutes to tweak something (and do a load of laundry). Not a very satisfying ride, but it seemed easier to push that bike faster and I did about 19 miles in about an hour. I'd never come close to that before. That was exciting. I can't wait to get it out on the road next weekend!

Thanks for the welcomes!

Amy, glad to see you back on BT!  Julie, I did do the Steph Johnson last summer.  It filled up fast once it was open for registration.  That would be great if you could make it down for it.  A friend up my mine has loaned me the TI DVD but I still haven't watched it.  Just another one of those things on my ever growing to do list.

Hope all had a great weekend!

I was fortunate enough to have met Stephanie when she was alive!!

She and her husband Greg who is the race director were passing thru San Francisco on their way to the Wine Country. I was honored to know her and I was lucky enough to get a few of my family members into the race last year after it was closed! my sister and my niece both did it...it was both of thier first triathlons....I WILL be there this next year...do you know when it is? last year it was September, which will work out well for me if it is that month this year!

I will go over my notes, but here are a few tips...

One of the biggest challenges for me were my legs. They felt like anchors. I would swim one lap and be totally exhausted. One of the things they teach you is how your arm placement affects your legs and keeps them from sinking. Finding the proper balance (they call it the "sweet spot") really makes a diffference. To find your balance kick off from the edge of the pool and glide (kicking just enough to keep afloat). Hands out front, wrists relaxed, looking straight down (I was always looking slightly ahead) and play around with the positioning of your hands. By raising and lowering your hands under the water ...notice what happens to your feet and legs (they start to rise up). When swimming freestyle...keep your arms relaxed, leading with your elbow, hand entering the water just ahead of your goggles. Again looking straight down. When your hand pierces the water (spear from a steep angle), aim for that positon you discovered when you were finding that "sweet spot". When I took the workshop he had mirrors placed on the bottom of the pool. It was great for checking your positioning and making sure you don't cross your arms over your midline (which could eventually cause shoulder problems).

Again...I highly recommend the DVD and drill cards. The drill cards are laminated and I take them to the pool. Another suggestion is to try to find out if you have a TI instructor in your area. Mine offers private lessons. Had I know this, I would probably have paid for just 2 to 3 hours of private lessons and saved a whole lot of cash. He also offers a Masters class downtown, but the times do not work for me.

Hope this little bit helps and doesn't cause more confusion.

Hey Julee...did your book by Terry Laughlin arrive? I took the Total Immersion Workshop back in November. It is super expensive, but helped me a lot. I learned more in those two days than a year of swimming with my Masters Swim Club. Something I found out (and also heard from several people) was that the DVD is more helpful than the book. I have the newest one..."Easy Freestyle" and highly recommend it. I will often watch parts of it before I hit the pool. Helps me visualize what I am supposed to be doing.

If anyone is looking for free swim workouts, I would suggest this site...

www.swimplan.com

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone

Any tips on what you learned at the workshop?

I was considering going to one, but now with the divorce going on, I think it's totally impossible this year because of the $$$. But maybe next year.

Easter is on April 12th.  I officially gave up diet pepsi, but I've actually decided not to drink any soda at all.  It's been mostly ok, although there are times when I just crave the carbonation.  And then of course there are other times when I could use the caffeine pick-me-up!

I'm now the owner of a tri bike! She's an Aegis T2 Pro that I bought from a member of my tri club. The bar tape will get replaced ASAP with solid red and I'm gonna have to change her to a compact crank. Needs a little tweaking with the cockpit fit but feels really good.

Congratulations! We're looking forward to hearing about the first ride! Just curious, why a compact? My sister has been toying with the idea, but she likes to mash and I think she'd be disappointed at the loss of power ... Trish

I'm a spinner and I'm used to a triple with a 30/27 granny gear. I don't see any way I'd be able to climb with a 39 chainring. With a 34 instead I won't lose much at the bottom end.

See, this is the type of conversation where I am just going "UM......DUH"......'cause I have no idea what any of these words me ! lol "Mash, crank, bottom end"  The other night my spin teacher was laughing (kindly do not get me wrong) when they were talking about "carbon fiber"..... i just said "I am so sorry but I have no idea what you just said" !  He giggled...... and said "I LIKE THAT"

I do not know if I will ever catch on to all the lingo ! ......but I am truly impressed you know it !

OK, we need to find out where you are and take it from there. Do you know about shifting gears? Low gears for climbing and high gears for speed?

Cadence is pedal revolutions per minute, basically how fast you are turning the cranks (cranks are the arms that the pedals attach to). Mashing basically means standing up on the pedals when the bike is in a higher gear, usually at a lower cadence, whereas spinning refers to staying seated, using lower gears, and pedaling at a higher cadence. People are usually much more comfortable mashing or spinning.

Oh that is so easy, I am NOWHERE ! (Well I know more now that you took time to teach me) !

I know that you get on a bike, and pedal/steer........I also know if there is a flat tire then you do not get on.  Get someone else to fix it, then repeat above.

I know nothing about changing tires/oiling/maintenance............and let's not forget I'll be riding a mountain bike that now has new thinner tires, I have no idea how many gears, and handle bar handles I bet will hurt my hands like hell !..........

I should have it back Tuesday from a tune up. He said he will true the wheels......basically take it apart and make it like new.  I had to ask him what he meant.

It's embarrassing, but I always tell anyone who I speak to "I am new....VERY new"........ and then they talk more on my level ! lol

that is ok...that is the only way to learn! if you act like you know things..then you will never learn!! so good job on being truthful! and soon we will be coming to you to true our tires, tune up our bikes and to show others how to switch gears, change flats, raise lower your seat, lube your chain, dial in your derailleurs....you will soon be one bicycling mama! just keep doing what your doing!!!! we all had to start somewhere! and I will help you with the bike riding stuff....if you will help me with the swim stuff! deal???

Tee hee, a deal it is !! thank you for the encouragement !  Now get in the pool ! lol
SWIM LIKE YOU LOVE IT............SWIM LIKE YOU LIKE IT .........or if that fails, swim like I forced you to go ! lol

woke up today feeling a bit under the weather! not sure if it is because I downed some nyquil last night!?!or if I have a touch of a bug or cold!? not feeling to perky this morning! in fact just the opposite! did someone hit me with a two by four!? my head really aches!!!

supposed to go on a swim...looks nice out so will try to follow thru and go...but may end up biking instead! need the time on the bike for my guinness challenge I am in...but have the rest of the week to catch up....so, hope everyone has a great Monday! will try and send inspires to each of you...but if not realize I am rooting for each and every one of you! keep going forward and make sure you push yourself a little in the process! have a great day/week!

TRAIN WELL!

Back in town and enjoying day 1 of my spring break. We had prime spring skiing conditions with lots of deep soft snow though it was a bit on the heavier side so I am a bit sore but it was well worth it.

I am sooooo glad that I go in my shorts and T run on Friday as we returned to town to find about 15 cm of new snow?! HUH?! No more shorts outdoors for another week or so...I just hope that things clear up in time for my race in 2 weeks! I would be so bummed if it were to get cancelled!

kew - 2009-03-21 4:39 PM Hi everyone. My name is Karen. With Julie's permission, and if it's ok with the rest of you, I would love to hang out with you guys. I am 44 years old, recently divorced and a mother of two teenage boys. I have been running off and on for years. Finally got around to doing my first Sprint last April and absolutely loved it. Would like to do an Oly this year, maybe a Half Ironman next year. After that...who knows Looking forward to chatting and getting to know all of you...

Welcome, Karen! Thanks for the swim tips- I know that I can definitely use them! Have you picked an Oly yet? Are you close to Van-groovy? Dh and I lived in North Van for two years- loved the trails and year round biking- but the rain drove us back to sunny (but snowy) Calgary.

A little bit about myself = For my 50th birthday last year, with some extra time on my hands after my daughter graduated from high school, I decided to become a triathlete, having never been involved in any athletics EVER. I literally couldn't run from one street light to the next in my neighborhood. Since then, I've lost 25 lbs, completed 2 mini-sprints, 1 sprint, numerous 5Ks, and two half marys (the last one just last weekend).  I'm married with with four kids - son, age 28 (employed-yes!); son, age 21 (employed-yes!, still at home); daughter, age 20 (actress living her dream in NYC); and son, 10 (5th grade, plays select baseball).

Tomorrow I'll take some time to read over the posts and try to figure out who everyone is. Thanks again! Look forward to getting to know everyone. And Happy Spring!!

Lisa

Welcome, Lisa! Congrats on all the races!  Way to not hold back! Looking forward to getting to know you too! The more the merrier- and we are quite the merry bunch...lots of LOL's and LMAO's in this thread. Laughing

I see we are still winning the "most posts" award in the 2009 BT Mentor Program   There is one, right?

Sorry I don't get here much.  My home computer is not working right and work is usually pretty locked down.  Then when I do get here, so much has happened since the last time, that I can't seem to get caught up on it all...then there are the times I'm just unmotivated with my injuries and the "big race" quickly approaching...

I did see there are new people here so I'd like to say "welcome".  Julie does an awesome job of inspiring us all, even when we occasionally drop off the face of the earth.  She finds us

As for me, I did get one good day of training this weekend.  An 11-mile walk/run thingy.  I had to walk and stretch alot due to my calf tear still healing and wanting to cramp up on me.  Then a 22 mile bike ride.  This was after the walk/run and my head was a little foggy.  I knew I had an appointment so decided since I can't get my full 30 miles in, I might as well do fewer miles uphill...problem with that is uphill is slow and it ends up taking the same amount of time!  Then I turned around at the halfway point and came screaming down the hill to realize I could have gone up the hill further as coming back was going to be faster...oh well.  I got a nice tan.

Sunday was stuck on the hill all day.  I use the word "stuck" as it was way too hot to be skiing after about 10 a.m.  My daughter raced very well in the morning, and we therefore had to stay all day to make it to the awards ceremony as she got 6th and 7th place on her two runs.  (Top 10 get awards)  Everyone got a little cranky (and stinky) in that heat, though.  By the time we got home everyone needed a nap and no triathlon training got done.  I plan to make up for that tonight.

Julee asked me to update a roster to include the new women. Here's the text and I'm also attaching it as a text file.
