Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() swishyskirt - 2010-04-12 5:27 PM So, I'm mostly doing fig newmans now for nutrition on the bike, though I always used to use GU Gels and may supplement with them. Does anyone use the figs for actual race day? I was calculating how many I'd need to carry with me, and it seemed a little crazy. Also, can you buy GE powder? I can't find it anywhere at the usual stores (Vitamin Shoppe, GNC, etc.). It's very frustrating, because I'd like to start training with it! JackRabbit sells it, I buy it in buckets ![]() |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I pulled something in my groin over the weekend and I'm at a loss to the seriousness of it. D'oh!!!!!!!!!! The thought of a flip turn or staying hunched over in aero just makes me shiver. GRRRR. |

That's so awesome. I totally need a reason to go there. Last time I went I bought some new running socks and then spent like, 30 minutes ogling the wetsuits and just about EVERYTHING else they were selling that I really totally didn't need but really totally wanted. Hey Swishy, I took 6 fig Newtons along for a ride last year @ IMLP and will do so this year. I like the Newman’s as well. KathyG likes the fig Newtons Raspberry which I think I have had and will try again. |

Each fig newton is about 70 calories (although to be fair, I may have accidentally grabbed the low fat ones from the shelf). That means I need at least 3, probably 4 fig newtons per hour (right? Because you should be consuming somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 cals an hour?). Thing two. Tasr, I'll be out there on the bike a LEETLE bit longer than you, I'm afraid. I'd need a whole box to get me to the run. ![]() I'm thinking of supplementing with GU gels...though it'd be nicer to only have to rely on the figs. I REALLY love them. They're easy to eat, sweet, chewy, but not too chewy like power bars. I'm always craving them now! So grateful to this thread for introducing me to the idea. Never would have tried it unless you guys had suggested it. Best. IM. Group. Ever! Edited by swishyskirt 2010-04-12 9:10 PM |

I can't speak for fig newtons since i've only snacked on them, never trained with them, but you will also be getting calories from whatever your liquid nutrition of choice is. For me I get most of my calories from liquid and supplement with one gel per hour, which is only 100 calories. You'll have to experiment in training with a liquid solid combo to get it right. |

OH yeah I use other nutrition as well Long training rides 100+ miles I take; and so pretty much the same on IM. 1 bottle of Hammer Perpetuem in a 2 scoop mix in 24ozs maybe 2 bottles 3 bottles of water or more (I did a 83 mile last week and drank 6 bottles) 2 scoops of Hammer Perpetuem in a plastic zip bag (backup) 1 banana (on all long rides) 6 Fig Newtons (yep) 2 Clif Shot blocks (these are 10 pieces) 2 Clif Shot Gu w/100mg caffeine (back up) I may also grab another gu or 2 on the IM ride. Run is a different story. ![]() Edited by tasr 2010-04-12 9:56 PM |

![]() I've been doing Snickers chocolate bars on my rides. Fig Newtons seem to make 'Nature Call' for me. |

Never would have tried it unless you guys had suggested it. Best. IM. Group. Ever! Amen. I have never been able to eat ANYTHING solid during a workout or race until now. My last couple of rides, I brought them along and had no problems whatsoever. I don't particularly like them, but I'll learn to if they work. I'll probably snack on them from time to time, too so my body gets used to processing them. For liquids, I've just been going with GE for the last six months or more. I'm done messing with Perpetuem and others as it eventually ends up bloating me. Simple is good now. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats to everyone on the races and PRs! Awesome. WittyCity, rest and ibuprofen! Do whatever doesn't hurt--if you can ride your bike NOT in aero and it doesn't hurt, then do that. Or swim without flip turns--you don't need those stinkin' flip turns anyway, there aren't any in the open water! I love your idea of the Swim Challenge for the bike phobes.... I'm definitely overcoming my bike phobia to train and do this race. I love Gatorade Endurance more than regular gatorade. Love that salty tang. I'm planning on living off the course during the race, except that I'm bringing some of those Gu Chomps things. Love those. I think Swishy mentioned being addicted to them too. Cranberry/Apple, yum. I went on my first long ride outside a couple of weeks ago, in the mountains--it was great, especially the part where I got to go 46.2 mph down a long hill! (The same hill that I was going 10mph when riding up it, lol). Then there was the part at the end of the ride, when I took my front wheel off to mount the bike on top of the car, and then promptly drove away, leaving the wheel on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. DOH! It was gone when I figured this out and went back to look. I was going to get new wheels anyway, but what a stupid thing to do! Now I make sure I put the wheel in the car BEFORE putting the bike up on top. Kelly |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not the cleanest of foods, but I keep a PB&J sandwich in a plastic bag in my back pocket and eat it at the halfway point of my long rides. Protein, carbs, sugar and best of all it tastes great...can't beat it! I also use the Gu gels and like the Chomps by Gu. Has anyone tried the Roctane? Is it really worth paying double the price for a gel? |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kelly - THAT SUCKS (about the wheel). Great ride though. If you enjoyed 46mph then I don't think your bike phobia is as bad as you think. |

Is it really worth paying double the price for a gel? I've used Roctane of the Vanilla-Orange variety and found it to be more on the liquid side of gels, so it goes down easier w/o getting stuck to the roof of your mouth, but I didn't like the taste much. It's like those weird vanilla-orange freezie pops they'd sell out of the back of a truck in my neighborhood during the summers when I was a kid. My stomach is like a keg, you can pretty much toss anything with calories in there and I'll be good to go, so I didn't have any digestive issue w/ Roctane. Anyway, I'd rather use Vanilla Bean Gu gels and Blueberry Pomegranate Gu Chomps on rides. Oh, and a banana. Delish. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() all this talk about nutrition has me wondering one thing: If gatorade and power gels work for you, and since they are free/inlcuded at LP, why would you use anything else? |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() cusetri - 2010-04-13 10:28 AM The only thing I can say as to why not is a matter of taste. While I can take any liquid they give on the course and plan on doing that, you can't control the flavors of the gels. Last time it seemed I kept getting handed the chocolate and I can't stand those. Don't want to waste time at each station asking for flavors or having to take one I can't seem to stomach. I will say I do love the cut up bananas they give out at the stations. Peel is still on them so it is like sucking them out of a straw! Convenient, tasty and comes in a biodegradeable wrapper!all this talk about nutrition has me wondering one thing: If gatorade and power gels work for you, and since they are free/inlcuded at LP, why would you use anything else? |

I used them for a few long runs during marathon training last year and they were fine, but no better than the regular Gu gels, so not worth the extra cost IMO. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-04-13 6:58 PM Who the heck steals someone's swimsuit? Wtf. This was, word for word, my exact utterance when I found out my suit was missing. I was in a hurry at the gym after my swim. Put everything in my bag as I normally do, but either 1. left my swimsuit on the bench (unlikely, it's a Dolfin Ugly...kinda hard to miss) or 2. someone snagged it when I wasn't looking (more likely--everything gets stolen at this gym if you don't keep an eye on it). I've called the rec center just about every day this week, in the hopes that someone ACCIDENTALLY grabbed it by mistake and put it in their bag. Maybe realized their mistake and sheepishly returned it to the front desk to be reunited with its owner? Um. Yeah. No such luck. It hasn't turned up. So, not that I'm gross or anything, but--I mean, it's a USED swimsuit. Who would even want to wear that? Ew. I'm literally the only person at the pool with a Dolfin Ugly and got compliments on it all the time. New one is in the mail. Different colors though. Sadly, the "fleurette" one that's gone missing is from last season and no longer available. ![]() I actually had to swim in my tri suit this week. Which was sort of upsetting because I pledged to never expose it to chlorine. Only murky lake water. Sigh. |
