bzgl40 - 2010-03-11 11:35 AM I am so happy right now I could just pee.  My half ironman is now back on at the end of June.  You can't see me but I am doing the happy dance.  I am not sure that it is the wisest thing for me to do but we decided to just make it happen.  Anyone want to come to Tucson and stay with my pets?  I have a few friends goign to the race with me as well so I'll have company.  Plus I get to spend a few nights in Portland hanging with friends that I miss.  So my race schedule is now set.

Now, if only I could get my swim down to under an hour.   I think I am looking at roughly a 7 hour race.  Not really sure on the bike.  I hear it is quite hilly.  Well, in one direction.  A few trips up Mt. Lemmon should help with that.

Yay for you!!!

Yayyyy!

But don't pee, that would require clean up.

And July is plenty of time to shave time off your swim and train for hills.  You're going to rock that race!

Mmmmmmmm brownies...

I guess it's fair to admit that last night I had two glasses of wine and another sleeve of girl scout thin mints for dinner.

But that was all... so that's reasonable, right?

Anyone have anything fun going on this weekend?  Anyone racing?

No racing, but testing out my brand spanking new racing snowshoes on Sunday.  Also testing out some loaner skate-ski gear that I'll be using in a race next weekend (along with the snowshoes).

Hope everyone is doing well.  I've been buried in midterms, administrative crap, and trying to get my house ready to sell, and have barely had time to get workouts in.  Trying to keep up with all the posts you guys write, but it's difficult.

Not a bad day.  I swam and didn't drown and I ordered a Power Tap wheel.  I took the plunge to decide to train with a bit more discipline and with POWER.  The wired Power Tap hub is selling off the shelves so I will have to wait a bit to receive the new toy - I mean technological training aid.

Thanks Justin for the advice.  Thanks Justine for trying to talk me out of it.  The combination of the two left me dizzy for a few weeks but I decided today I want to be faster on the bike and I haven't been training with any real discipline so far.  Not to say I haven't been working hard but I think the Power Tap will give me better goals and test me better than I have been so far.  We will see.

I step away from the d_mn computer for a second and Keri logs in.  Sorry folks, obviously Keri has no interest in gadgets and is not concerned with drowning; this was my post.

Congrats on dropping the coin for the PT. It IS worth the money (IMHO). Justin P. Doesn't want you to get faster on the bike...it may decrease his chances of crushing you again like he did at the DU! LOL! Where did you order the PT from? (If you don't mind me asking?)

I think you are correct Justine is pretty sure I am out for revenge on the next DU.  Won't happen at Bridgeland because the swim lead is going to be too severe to catch up.

I bought the PT wheel at Excel Sports Boulder per your advice.  You can't beat the $659.00 price and the more research I did the happier I was with the DT 465 Rim.  I ordered a DT415 wheel for the front to match (sort of).   Keri makes out in the deal since I will be moving parts to her bike to help with the transition between the trainer wheel and the road wheel (she currently only gets a few gears on the drainer - we will fix that by matchign the two cassettes)

Topic: cassettes

I just realized yesterday I have a 13/27T casette (My road bike is more for comfort than speed).  This helps explain why I am in a lower rear gear than everyone I ride with.  I am considering a 11/23T.  What do others that don't deal with hills have?  I have no travel race plans anywhere in my future before a TRI bike purchase and I have triple front gear if I needed it (I NEVER use the smallest gear).  Since I am a bit of a masher I thought the 11/23T would fit my style better.  I am working on less mashing but I am sure it won't die easily.

Thanks for those of you that are knowledgable on the mechanics of the sport.  I am still learning.  It is clear to me I purchased the wrong bike stlye for what I am trying to accomplish but I still love the bike.  When I jump to a TRI bike watch out Justine.  He is going to be crushing me for awhile (he hit 28 MPH without heavy effort yeasterday) on that d_mn Orbea.  No new bike plans until 2012 for me.  I just bought 1/2 of a TRI bike in PT/wheels yesterday - hope it helps!

Not true at all... I have come to terms with the fact that Ken is faster on the bike and has more speed on the run (That's why I'm still loosing weight) Ken shared your last e-mail with me and it was the best explanation of why and how to use a power tap. Now it's Ken's job to be disciplined and do what the numbers tell him to do.

By the way, I didn't crush him he got a cramp. He'll hydrate next time.

I have no idea what any of this means but it sounds cool. I'm completely lost with gearing and mechanical stuff. I just get on and ride and shift when I think I need to. Ignorance is bliss....

Haha, I was JUST IMing with my best friend and we were both complaining about being hungry.

I just had a banana and some string cheese.

I want sushi.  Don't ask me why I'm craving a good spicy tuny roll at 9:30 in the morning, but that's what sounds good.

Banana and string cheese?  Weird combo IMO.  Apple and string cheese though, yummy.  Anyone ever eat hot apple pie with Kraft singles on top?  It's a big thing where I come from but I like my pie minus cheese.

Pie and cheese?

Sounds like a good way to ruin a perfectly good pie to me.

I'll take my apple pie with ice cream please.

And I usually eat some sort of fruit and string cheese for breakfast.  I need something portable that I can shove in my purse, and that fits the bill.  Otherwise I won't eat anything until around 1, but will drink my typical gallon of coffee which results in some really intersting side effects.

I always make 2 apple and 2 pumpkin for Thanksgiving and my oldest LOVES my apple pie so I always make 2 for his birthday, he likes it much more than cake.

Happy Friday, everyone! A little happier Friday here because it's the last work day before spring break. I love being an adult and getting a spring break. The job may give me fits at times, but it's worth it for this and summer.

So my agenda for the upcoming week includes wetsuit shopping and getting out on the bike. I'll probably re-arrange a bit of the planned training to focus on the bike and run.

As for the wetsuit...I'm debating between full-sleeve and sleveless. I am hoping the temps warm up quite a bit before the end of April, but I'm a little nervous that sleveless might not be enough. Any suggestions? If my core is warm, will that negate any discomfort in the arms once I get into the swim on race day? Also, I'll probably be venturing to Tri on The Run to actually try them on...any helpful hints on the wetsuit try-on?

What are the projected temps of the water?  I've swam in 70 degree water with a full suit with no issues.  Course I have only done .5mi so not sure if the longer distances would be worse or not.  I've also done as low as 62 in it and felt fine so I have a large tolerance range.  Think about other races you might want to do in the future and if they would be better off with a full suit or not.  I'm kind of freaking a bit cause I signed up for some races that most likely will not be wetsuit legal.  I better be a better swimmer by then.

Um, trying on the wetsuit.  Be hydrated. :-)  Be prepared to wiggle and squiggle and squeeze.  For sure do not get a suit that is too big.  I just slowly bring mine up.  So I will start by getting it up to my knees, then to my waist (hauling it all the way up and settling it into place there), then I get my arms in.  You really want to get up up onto your waist.  That then also allows you to haul it up and give you the flexibility you need in your shoulders.  Remember to not use your fingernails.  I use the pads of my fingers.

I got my suit at Tri on the Run and am very happy.
I originally didn't want one with sleeves - I thought I'd feel somewhat claustrophobic and worried about range of motion.  However, at the time I got mine they didn't have anything in my size that was sleeveless.  I tried on 3 suits and it was obvious to me which was the right suit.  They were on sale when I got mine which helped and I used my HRTC discount.  If you do not belong to HRTC I would join - the wetsuit purchase alone will more than pay for the membership and the discounts lasts year round at TOTR as well as Luke's Locker and a few other places.  I got a Blue Seventy Reaction, they had a cheaper Blue Seventy but this one was worth the extra money.
Don't be afraid to try on different sizes.  I thought I needed a large but the medium tall actually fit me much better.  Good luck!
