Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() chris2533 - 2012-07-23 8:54 PM I looked at some statistics of my race. I only looked at 45 - 54 year olds. What I noticed was that there was not very much relation between age and time. The big relationship was the number of participants and age. After 50, the number of participants drops like a rock. Interesting observation. In big races however the number of participants is far, far greater. I'm thinking of staging my own races from now on, this way gold is always guaranteed and you don't have to worry about other people. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() chris2533 - 2012-07-23 8:54 PM What walks down the hallway and goes "Ow, Ow, Ow, Ow, Ow"? Answer: Me. Not able to walk well today. Calves hurt a whole lot and quads hurt too. Took an ice bath yesterday. Should I take another one tonight? Am foam rolling the calves right now. I looked at some statistics of my race. I only looked at 45 - 54 year olds. What I noticed was that there was not very much relation between age and time. The big relationship was the number of participants and age. After 50, the number of participants drops like a rock. Age # 45 14 46 6 47 9 48 7 49 8 50 8 51 3 52 3 53 2 54 2 The guy you have to look out for is that 60 year old. That is the one who has been running for 50 years, fit as heck, in tune with his body, you won't outsmart him, and he gets a kick out of frying people younger than him in a race (he is always nice about it). My goal is to be that guy. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I took my aerobars, I mean my bike, for a spin this morning. Just a 30 min easy ride to get the feel of the aerobars. Was expecting handling issues, and they were there, but spend the last 10 min just doing circles on a parking lot to get the "feel" of the bike while in aero. I know its going to take a bit, and this was only my first ride, but overall feel good about handling issues. Having said that, there were 2 things that prevented me from staying in Aero for longer periods, and wanted to know from you guys if its just a matter of getting used to it or a bigger problem: 1) Feel my neck/shoulders were tight (did not particularly bother me while in aero, but could feel it once I come out of aero) 2) Discomfort on my forearms/biceps (like a sore muscle type discomfort) While at the shop, I could spin in aero position for a while and actually felt relaxed and comfortable, so I am thinking it might be tension from trying to"control" the bike with my forearms instead of my hands. Hopefully as I become more comfortable on aero position, I will relax more and it will be better. Did you guys have similar experiences? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Updates from the weekend. Not nearly as much activity as I had hoped (in terms of SBR) but it was a horribly busy weekend. Feeling like my body is telling me to slow down a bit this week. Prolly won't be a problem since there will be no swimming at all until Friday at the earliest, and temps are still too hot to run long outside. Stitches in my arm from having a biopsy taken. Hoping for good results on Thursday or Friday this week.

Hoping for good results on Thursday or Friday this week. Just went from exactly the same thing, got my good news on Friday. Back to training, but no swimming until friday (went on the pool with my kids, but that's allowed, I think...). Good luck with yours. |

There are people here who know more than me, but I can tell you that my aero bars solves for back and neck issues for me. Before I put the on my old road bike, I would have numbness in my hands when I went for longer rides. I would also come off of the bike with a very stiff back. Since putting the aeor bars on my old road bike and , then the new bike came with aero bars, I have not had any issues. It take a little time and minor adjustments for my arm rests to get used to the arm rests on my current bars. |

Andy, I'm impressed. I can still hardly walk today. Calves and quads. I have a conference all day every day with evening activities as well this week, so hard to do shake out stuff, but I did just walk the dog. |

![]() instead of traditional strength training with machines or free weights, i have been attending crossfit classes. i think i am getting stronger. When i do attend classes a couple of times a week, i have less general aches and pains with daily living activities. The problem is that because i am not the 55 year old that has been always involved in sports my body awareness and klutziness requires me to always been the "special needs" student. There are usually 3 coaches for a class of about 15 and I get one assigned just to me. I am hoping if i keep going i will eventually be able to train my body to do what they are asking of me. Question: Does anyone else have experience doing crossfit? If so, has it helped with triathlon performance and general strength?Did you have trouble learning moves? |

I am familiar with it, but can't tell you how much it will help with triathlon. I do believe that any activity which helps with strength and flexability will be a benefit as a supplement to training. Learning the moves is like any activity that requires muscle memory, the more you do it the better you will be. Just remember use it as a supplement to make you stronger faster, you still have to swim bike and run. It is fun to give ourselves a mental break and add in another activity, thats part of the reason I still play soccer. Edited by JBacarella 2012-07-26 7:21 AM |
