That is so weird about having your suit stolen at the pool. I had my bra taken once while I was in the shower..how strange is that? I don't even want to think about that and why?

Dude, women's swim suits cost like $80 now!! If I could steal a swim suit, I would certainly contemplate it! =p

Actually, I must confess...

About....jeebus, 7 years ago... I was a lifeguard (do we all know where this is going?) I watched a swim suit for about a solid month just sit in the unclaimed clothes.  It was the chlorine resistant kind.  I finally figured what the hell... so I brought it to a swim practice and tied it to our lane line so that it sat in the chlorinated water for 2 hours.  Took it home and washed it by itself.  Wore it as a drag suit all season and and I still have the thing.  SO THERE!!! AAAAAAANNNDD it's in better shape then the non-chlorine resistant suits that I bought LAST YEAR!

OH! And Mirjam...I finally tried fig newtons during a run about two weeks ago.  I was out of gels and figured I'd choke to death because they are so dry, but I survived.  I think a concern I have for LP is sloshing in my tummy when I get off the bike.  I like JenN's idea of merely sipping sparingly during that last half hour on the bike.  I plan on switching over to caffeinated gels for the run.  My bricks have sucked donkey balls so far, so I'm going to have to rely on good nutrition as my crutch to get through the marathon.

I had my googles lifted about 2 months ago. I thought to myself...what if I had pinkeye? Who would want to wear someone else's crap? Bizarre.

Monty - 2010-04-13 10:23 AM Taste aside, did you notice any difference in performance or fatigue as they are supposed to be formulated for long course with the amino acid chains and other bs they put on the marketing literature? Do you think you really can't tell and they are not worth the extra coin? Thanks for the advice!
Performance wise, it was just another gel to me. I used them for a few long runs during marathon training last year and they were fine, but no better than the regular Gu gels, so not worth the extra cost IMO.

I agree.  Roctanes are 100% marketing.  There is no difference.

Personally I prefer E-Gels over any other gel and I've tried just about all of them.  E-Gels go down really easy, they are 150 calories per (about 1.5 times bigger than a normal gel which makes them more satisying) and I love all of the fruit flavors -- very tasty.  http://www.cranksports.com/

I'm thinking of experimenting with Hammer Perpetuem this weekend.

GE doesn't have protein in it, right? It's just electrolytes? I'm concerned about that, and haven't decided if I will go with real food or manufactured fuel. I will admit the peanut butter sandwich sounds divine--and I totally crave "real" food on long rides. Just not sure how that would play out at an Ironman, though...

I put one in my bike special needs bag and sucked it down right there in front of my holder! It was quite nice at that point in the race.

From my experience and a few of my friends, Perp works great on Training Rides, but not on Race Rides.  I think it's due to the higher heart rate, but Perp seems to 'rock up' in my stomach; I also believe the protein makes me a bit nauseous.  The theory behind the small amount of protein added (as I understand it after reading an article from Hammer Nutrition) is that we cannabolize muscle during endurance exercise and the protein helps immediately rebuild it.  Personally, I find this hard to believe.  I don't believe it possible to rebuild muscle while racing; the body has a hard enough time digesting a few hundred calories per hour -- how the heck is it gonna start recovering muscle?  A few times I've eaten peanut butter before a run, bike or swim and the results (for me) are disatrous.  I get very nauseaus immediately following the workout, and again I believe it's due to the protein.

The one thing I will be adding to my gel/water one hour, gatorade another hour combo is Carbo-Pro.  Carbo-pro is 100% carbs, 0% electrolytes, 0% fat, 0% protein.  It agrees very well with my stomach and body in general during Training and Racing.  I know a really fast guy in this thread who uses it and it has been a 'magic bullet' for me.

The only time I've ever experimented with real food during a race was my last HIM over the summer. I inhaled three Oreo cookies at the start of the run. Heavenly.

Lol. I hope that doesn't mean I don't work hard enough for food to adversely affect me. I have no horror stories (yet, knock on wood) involving food.

Heh. I totally read that on their site, too. Did you watch the little ad they had for Hammer Perp? I especially liked the part where they show the cyclist dude blowing up (because his body ate all his muscles, I guess?). Nice visual.

Carbo-pro in gatorade is perfect- carbs+electrolytes, and nothing else to mess with my stomach.

Tell me about your SOCKS!!!!!

All of mine are stupid.  They slip down in my shoes.  Are yours extra cushiony? Or the really thin wicking kind?

OK I'll talk about my socks to you.
i have all sorts of athletic socks acquired and given as gifts but my favourites are still the light blue and white defeet ones.  They are thin and wicking and reasonably tight and they don't slip anywhere.

I sware by Asics socks.  I buy their Hera Low Cut brand sold in a 3-pack at Sports Authority.  I have 12 pairs   They are extra thin atop the cross of the foot, thicker in the heel and around the toes to prevent chafing and provide a little cushioning.  They never slip down.  They also breathe very well and I've never (knock on wood) gotten blisters with them.  I've been using this brand for about three years now.

Oh, and I know we are barely halfway through the April 600-Mile Challenge next month I am already thinking of laying down a MAY SWIM CHALLENGE.  Any thoughts on some distances??

p.s. I will not be issuing a Run challenge, ever, as I don't want to be responsible for the myriad injuries that would occur.

I man up on the bike and don’t wear any.  Then I actual wear women’s Sofsole (W-5-10) multi-sport w/bamboo in low cut for running.

I'd rather do an 800 bike challenge than a swim challenge

Swishy, that SUCKS about your swimsuit! That would me off way more than losing a bike wheel. The bike wheel is my own fault and just stupidity. But it would really skeeve me out to know there are creepy people in the locker room lifting my used clothes when I'm not looking. Sheesh.

I have had people walk past my shower stall and steal my shampoo bottle off the floor. Now I take sample sizes. I thought about an empty, expensive shampoo bottle with cooking oil or something, just to "get" them...

I actually wear my most old, paint-stained, cruddy sweats to the pool because I don't have a lock and I figure they're too beat up for anyone to steal out of the locker. Then I take my valuable stuff (car keys, phone) in a gym bag and park it on the bleachers next to the lifeguard.

People stealing stuff is NOT like WittyCity, taking a suit that's been unclaimed for ages. That's just recycling something that's gonna get thrown out anyway. Wash it, sterilize it, wear it in good health. But geez, don't STEAL it people.

I forgot my suit at the pool the other day and went back immediately because I knew if I left it there and trusted the honesty of people to take it to the lost and found, it'd be gone.

OK, socks--I don't have any worth mentioning--they're all old, I need new ones!

Josh, you are right, I have beaten my previous phobia of flying down hills. Hooray! Used to be really bad, I was constantly terrified. Now I think it's a blast. If I could just get rid of my phobia of riding bikes on roads with crazy people in cars, I'd be doing great.

Swim challenge, OK! I need to swim more.

I am going to throw out a crazy thought. See how we do on the bike challenge before we start a new one? Crazy.

Wuss.
