Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was fortunate enough to have met Stephanie when she was alive!! She and her husband Greg who is the race director were passing thru San Francisco on their way to the Wine Country. I was honored to know her and I was lucky enough to get a few of my family members into the race last year after it was closed! my sister and my niece both did it...it was both of thier first triathlons....I WILL be there this next year...do you know when it is? last year it was September, which will work out well for me if it is that month this year! What a nice picture! I looked around this evening to see if I could find any information but don't see anything posted anywhere. I'll let you know if I hear of anything! |

This internet thingy actually had a solution for my problem: the tool kept slipping out of the part; a clamp to hold it in place and I was golden. Now, I have to adjust the derrailleur to work with the new crank. Two step forward, one step back. I was gonna say, now you have to adjust the derrailleur................. LOL....... (yeah, i do not know what a derrailleur is.......BUT I DO KNOW WHAT A CLAMP IS) !! woohooo

Do you know about shifting gears? Low gears for climbing and high gears for speed? Cadence is pedal revolutions per minute, basically how fast you are turning the cranks (cranks are the arms that the pedals attach to). Mashing basically means standing up on the pedals when the bike is in a higher gear, usually at a lower cadence, whereas spinning refers to staying seated, using lower gears, and pedaling at a higher cadence. People are usually much more comfortable mashing or spinning. Oh that is so easy, I am NOWHERE ! (Well I know more now that you took time to teach me) ! I know that you get on a bike, and pedal/steer........I also know if there is a flat tire then you do not get on. Get someone else to fix it, then repeat above. I know nothing about changing tires/oiling/maintenance............and let's not forget I'll be riding a mountain bike that now has new thinner tires, I have no idea how many gears, and handle bar handles I bet will hurt my hands like hell !.......... I should have it back Tuesday from a tune up. He said he will true the wheels......basically take it apart and make it like new. I had to ask him what he meant. It's embarrassing, but I always tell anyone who I speak to "I am new....VERY new"........ and then they talk more on my level ! lol I'm working on a primer for you. Yeah, I'm a geek! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() sigh...always in a conundrum when it comes to buying running/bike/tri gear. I believe in supporting the local guys BUT prices in the US are always so much cheaper like half the cost, even including the exchange. So we do lots of online ordering- the odd one was when dh got his cervelo (which is made in canada) and we paid about $1000 less ordering from the US. Go figure. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's my first try at a Bicycle Gears Primer. I've tried to keep it as simple as I can but it is sometimes necessary to get a bit technical. Please let me know what's not clear or what else is needed. Bicycle Gears Primer The gears on your bike are like the transmission in your car; they are designed to let the system work most efficiently for the speed and work you are doing. In the case of your car there’s an optimal range for the engine to turn (rpm’s); in the case of your body on a bike it’s the speed your legs are going (cadence). Low gears are for power and high gears are for speed. The gear you are in is determined by the combination of the front gear (chainring) and the rear gear (cog). Technically, it’s the ratio of gear teeth that matters (front divided by back). You are in a lower gear when that ratio makes a smaller number and you are in a higher gear when that ratio makes a higher number. A typical road bike will either have two or three chainrings and 8, 9, or 10 cogs. A typical mountain bike will have three chainrings and 8 or 9 cogs. In the case of both the chainrings and the cogs, the bike will be easier to pedal the closer the chain is to the bike frame. At this point it gets a little complicated because closer in the front puts you on a smaller chainring and closer in the back puts you on a larger cog. Mathematically, a smaller chainring reduces the numerator and a larger cog increases the denominator, but either will result in a smaller ratio. Most bikes use levers to change the gears and most use a larger lever to move to a larger gear (cog or chainring) and a smaller lever to move to a smaller gear (cog or chainring). Some bikes use a twist grip instead. When you start to head uphill, or into a wind, you will want to shift to a lower (easier) gear. As you continue uphill you may begin to tire, or the slope may get steeper, and you'll want to downshift again (and again...). After you crest the hill, or the wind lets up, you'd shift back up into the higher (harder) gears and start picking up speed again. The subject of mashing vs spinning is related to pedaling when the going gets hard. Some people prefer to leave the bike in a harder gear and stand up on the pedals (mashing) while others will remain seated and pedal easier gears (spinning). In either case, you would use the same total energy to get up the hill; mashing uses more energy per pedal revolution whereas spinning breaks up the work into smaller pieces. In theory, mashing would tire you out more quickly.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My bike is ready ! I will probably get it tomorrow afternoon or Thursday morning after preschool........ in any event, now I'll have a bike. Just need to figure out if I am a masher or a spinner........ with all the 1/2 hour standing classes we've done in spin class, I wonder if I'll do that very much ?............. Plus on a real bike it would wobble side to side when I am struggling.......well in any event, I'm just glad to have the opportunity to ride the thing. I bet more questions will happen as soon as I get on it and ride ! lol |
