Oh, and I know we are barely halfway through the April 600-Mile Challenge next month I am already thinking of laying down a MAY SWIM CHALLENGE.  Any thoughts on some distances??

p.s. I will not be issuing a Run challenge, ever, as I don't want to be responsible for the myriad injuries that would occur.

I'd rather do an 800 bike challenge than a swim challenge

8-Hundy!!  Yikes.  Hmmm. . .If we have at least FIVE BT'ers hit the 600 mark this month, I say we go for it.  Absolutely.  I mean, it is all about the Bike, right?  I mean, Chrissie Wellington even says she doesn't do any long runs over 1.5 to 2 hours ; Natascha Badmann has come out of the water 20 minutes down at Kona and still won 1st place.  It's all about the Bike.   Eight hunnnnndddreeeddd miles ... wow that's tempting LM.  Very tempting indeed.   Oh wait, Grandpa Fred said us whippersnappers need to get threw this Challenge first.  Let's talk in, say, 16 days, k.  :

I mean, Chrissie Wellington even says she doesn't do any long runs over 1.5 to 2 hours

Yes but a 2 hour run for Chrissy is still over 20 miles!!

You are kidding about not having swum that in 2 years aren't you?

No he's not.  The best all time quote was from JamesG in Charlies Montauk HIM RR.  And I quote from JamesG (I can hear his English Accent as I read this)

Charlie as always you astound me that you even finish these things given your lack of training. Great job on the improvement...

Dude I don't want to state the obvious but you have a lot of work to do before Placid next year...

Cheers - JG

Classic Quote.  James is the Man.

Charlie is 150 lbs soaking wet, so he gets away with a lot of things some of us bigger boys can't.

PennState - 2010-04-14 4:17 PM Grampa Fred says "dont get ahead of yourself DC" But yes more challenges in May sounds about right. I will lay down this challenge: Swim 36,000 yards (20 miles) Bike 700 miles Run 100 miles I'm in for this regardless but welcome anyone silly enough to join me

I may do the Swim and Bike numbers, but I would likely be around 80 miles.  We'll see next month.  You so crazy Grandpa Freddy!

Unfortunately, it was not a joke at all.

However, my yardage will be WAY up from anything I've done before.  I wont fake this one, though I won't be swimming fast, either.  1:20-1:25 will probably be my estimate come race day.

The wife had back surgery three weeks ago, which put the kabosh on getting out of the house much for several weeks leading up to it, then through recovery.  It was a stretch merely getting done the little I was able to do.  I'll be taking a dip once this week, and thrice next week.  That'll be the norm from then on out as my life will regain some semblance of a routine.  Shift work BLOWS sometimes.

Sounds good, but I have 2 races in May. Even though I say they will be training races, you can't help but back off those weeks to make sure you do well. One is a Sprint which I wouldn't back off training for, but my 22 year old nephew is racing and keeps talking trash. May have to school the lad!

I did 824 last August but had to take a bunch of vacation days to make it happen! But if it meant I didn't have to swim as much it would be very appealing

I take the family to Tokyo Disney for a few days and you guys whip out 5 pages!  Wow.

Nutrition:  I've switched to Infinite and it's been nice only worrying about one thing.  The races here in Japan give out random items (hot noodles and tea during my last marathon) so living off the course is a bad idea.  I still can't believe people dipping their hands in plates of salt then onto their tongue.  I'm no germaphobe but blaah.

Socks:  No socks on the bike and I wear Injinji toe socks on the run.  Sure they take a few extra seconds in T2 but I've had zero blisters since switching.

I love my lbs.  I don't know what it's called, I just know how to get there.  Anyway, I just had my cassette changed, bike cleaned, and a full tune up for 4000 yen, about $40.  Komesu doesn't speak any english and there are no reciepts or slips of any kind.  You just drop it off and pick it up a few hours later.  Komesu refuses to let you take your own bike off the rack or put it back on your car.   He also cleaned my old cassette and put it in the packaging so well I thought that he forgot to swap it out for the new one.

Komesu is never too busy to get your bike in and out within a few hours and he is good at what he does.  Last year right before IM Japan the bolt to my brake's hub quick release stripped not allowing it to hold the brake cable.  Komesu re-threaded the hub then made a screw that fit, fixing the quick release.  He did this for about $5 and saved me from having to order parts online and wait until they were delivered here.

I'm sure not one of them! Unless there is a massive storm and they cancel the run part of the race!

Papson, salty noodles and tea during a race sounds awesome. I love Japanese food. I thought about having a thermos of miso soup waiting for me after the Ironman--I lose so much salt during races that I have actually had to stop on the way home, go into a fast-food place, and get salt packets to eat... (This was before I discovered Endurolytes.) Sushi after a race is the BEST.

I've done 50k runs where they had boiled potatoes that you dipped in salt and ate during the run. Fabulous! And I did have a thermos of strong iced tea about 3/4 of the way through one, and it was rocket fuel. Maybe they are onto something in Japan...

OK everyone, when are you gonna do your first open-water swim of the season? And if you live in Florida, California, or Hawaii, you don't count! I'm talking to all of you who live where there is winter and your local open water is COLD. Tell me where you plan to do your first open-water swim and what the water is like.

I'll go first--I live in a town on Long Island that is surrounded by salt water. Long Island Sound on one side, huge bay on the other. The Sound is more fun because sometimes it has waves. Current water temperature is in the high 40s/low 50s. BRRR!

I'm hoping to do my first open-water swim in early May when hopefully the water will be about 55.
