Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone! I'm finally home and the legs are feeling good. I think we had over 16 different dishes tonight and Kathy and I contributed a really nice Chinese Chicken salad that was quite popular. Remind me to make most of it ahead of time next year if it falls on the same day as the 10k!!! Grilling the chicken the night before might have been advisable but then again, we were making a bunch of fruit filled butter cookies last night! I think my legs were more tired from cooking than from the actual race. If anyone wants the recipe, it is super low in calories and sodium, just shoot me a p.m. ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm back from the dead.. I couldn't shake this flu (3 weeks & going) & got a fever last Thursday night. Felt like hell through the weekend and didn't toe the line on Sat for my 1st race of the year. 0-1... I did learn two important lessons from this: 1) if you're sick, ease up on the training 2) go to the doctor sooner than later. I knew both of these prior to the blow up, but I always think I can shake it off without proper treatment. Learned the hard way, but lessons learned. I'm still out of commission, but hope to get back at it tomorrow or wed. Chris - awesome bike. I love the Felt line. They make great bikes. Kim - Great race. You're a speed demon! |

I have noticed when I have finished my long workouts I try to drink water, Gatoraide and even try to eat something not very fast then all of a sudden I feel like I am going to puke. I sit still and let it pass. any idea's During long or intense workouts the blood from your stomach is shunted to other areas of the body making digestion hard. It happens to me during intense efforts. If you can stand it, keep your current strategy. If not, slow down the consumption of real food in favor of liquids. |

I had tried swimming in 3-4 different wetsuits that I rented/borrowed/bought and all of them seemed to really bother my shoulders. The 2 piece seems to move with me a lot more so nowhere near as much shoulder fatigue. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LOL, responding to posts from the weekend. Barry, I should be picking up my 11-28 tonight, I ordered it last week or so. I think I need it for 1 triathlon and 2-3 bike races I am doing this year. Bike races I need it as some are going up the side of a mountain and I don't want to fall over. For the 1 triathlon it has what seems to be a 3-4 mile hill that I spent the entire time my 25 last year and was way over my supposed to be in wattage zone. The thought is by having a few more gears I will be able to stay in the right zone. So I plan on using it in certain situations, I think the gear differences are going to be pretty big to use for every day riding, but I'll test it out and let you know what I find. You can find Ultegra cassette's for $75, so not too bad of an expense to just use a few times a year. I already have the 2 tools needed to pull off a cassette so again no additional expense. |

We always consider Hawaii our celebration so tonight it's off to our last Puppy Class! I love Valentine's Day, just because I like attempting to take care of Ryan every now and then since usually he takes care of me since I'm so busy with school. I brought him to the Chicago Auto Show on Saturday as an early Vday gift, and then I baked chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter cups in them with pink icing for his work today. I made him chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, and I'm going to make him a special dinner tonight! I'm thinking chicken fettucine alfredo. I wanted to attempt to replicate the Cheesecake Factory's Four Cheese Pasta because that's his favorite meal ever, but I can't find a similar recipe ANYWHERE! So if anybody has any suggestions, I'm open to them! OH, and I also snuck a sweet little valentine in his work bag this morning! He should find it when he eats lunch. I haven't gotten anything yet, but he did tell me I wasn't allowed to leave the apartment today. So we'll see what happens! And even better than all that, today is my Test Day for Jorge's Winter Maintenance Plan! How is THAT for romantic!? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats on your great runs Kim and Sam! I am mildly freaking out about my upcoming 1/2 marathon. The last few weeks have been super rough. We've had three different bugs run through the house (thanks to daycare), my husband traveling a lot for work, and my normal running routes being too dangerous with the ice (thanks Cambridge. NOT!) all of which has prevented me from following my training plan and left me feeling defeated and wishing I had a treadmill. No way I'll hit my goal. Just hoping for the best without injuring myself. Loved reading the PT vs HR/RPE discussion. SSMinnow - 2011-02-14 7:05 AM Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!! Who has special plans? Not a terribly romantic way to spend the night but tonight is the final night of my Adult Team Ski Racing league. I've had a great year but our team had a couple bad nights so despite being in 1st place after the first week of racing we're now in 12th. If we don't have a stellar night tonight we won't make championships. This would be the first time we didn't make it in 10 yrs of being part of the league. I'll be crushed. So fingers crossed we can pull it together as a team. At least my husband and the kids will be there to cheer me on. I failed on making valentine's sugar cookies for them yesterday so I'll have to swing by a bakery and pray some CVS still has valentine;s cards. |

I guess I was more talking about the RPM difference. When you have smaller differences between cogs there isn't as big of a jump from one to the other. with the 11-28, I assume there will be pretty big jumps.LOL, hard to explain, I suppose pedaling along and trying to find a comfortable gear, with less difference between cogs you can make minute adjustments by switching to a different cog. With bigger differences in the cogs there you might be pedaling along at 80 rpm, shift up one gear and instead of pedaling at 85 rpm you might shoot up to 100 rpm.Does that make any sense?Shifting shouldn't be any difference, you pull on the shifter and it will move the chain along just fine. The only other thing might be the chain length, if you're already close, adding that 28 tooth cog and your chain might not have enough slack. Edited by dalessit 2011-02-14 8:59 AM |

Barry, I have an 11-28 (50-34 on the big ring) and I really like it. Have never thought, I wish I had my 12-25 instead...which I had/have on my road bike. The 11 gives me a little bit more to push with on slight downhills and I never feel like I am missing the in between gears. The 28 makes those steep 12-15% grades ALOT easier than my 12-25. I think the only thing you miss is the 16, 18, and everything between 24-28. The 24 feels much like 25 to me but when I get to 28 my legs go, ahhhh. ![]() |

We always consider Hawaii our celebration so tonight it's off to our last Puppy Class! Volunteering at both kid's parties at school today, no real "grown-up" plans. The whole sitter/reservation thing stresses ut out on nights like this. But we usually try to do something together no on the real holiday. I used to try to cook a bunch of red food for dinner (without using food coloring -- nature's reds!), but haven't made any plans for that yet so it likely won't happen. Ooooh, I *do* have a bunch of beets from my CSA so maybe I'll make a beet soup or something red/purple!!! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Didn't get a chance to jump into all the gear discussion this weekend. My final take on all of it. If you want to get faster the best way is to train more. I don't think any of us here have hit our max potential in Triathlon, there are some that probably are pretty close if not already there in either running, biking or swimming, but not in all three. So you're always going to benefit from getting out there and doing it. If having a powertap, nice training wheels, runnnig with an ipod, training with no electronics, twinkie on a stick out in front of you, whatever, helps you to get out there and train, if you can afford it, do it. I do this as a hobby, I enjoy playing with numbers, electronics, obsessing over bike parts, shoes, reading numerous posts on position, which water bottle setup is most aero, etc. It makes me happy, and keeps me motivated to get out there and train. People ask for my opinion on parts, going faster, etc, i'm going to give my opinion, some of it is from personal experience, some from reading, in the end it's my forumlated opinion. I am not an expert in much of anything so take my advice for what it's worth. I listen to what everyone else here and other sites has to say, some of it I agree with and try to incorporate in my training, some I agree with and store it away for future use, and some of it I completely ignore. I hope that is what everyone else does with my opinions or anyone elses, take what you want, leave the rest, that's why we do this mentor group, everyone has cool, unique experiences, even the folks just starting out, so don't be afraid to chime in on questions. So from me, with respect to biking (if it's in your budget), to make your bike faster or to use less energy on the bike and have more for the run, do this stuff. 1. Get those race wheels, they'll probably make you faster than what you're riding now, the deeper the better, but deeper front will make bike control tougher in the wind. 2. Pay attention to what kind of tires and tubes you put on them, they matter, and it's very little expense. 3. Get an aero helmet and use it in #4 to make sure you have the right kind. 4. Get a good bike fit, make sure you're comfortable enough to ride the distances while trying not to be a parachute in the wind. 5. Training and racing with a power meter is the bomb, gives you great feedback and helps you keep yourself in check, if your zones are correct you shouldn't have to worry about HR, if you are in HR Z5 but Power Z3, either your power or HR zones are wrong. 6. put a wheel cover on the back, it will make you faster and not compromise handling. 7. EDIT: Style matters, make sure you stuff matches. If you can't be fast, at least look fast. Do you NEED to do any of this stuff, NO, I can do a triathlon on a beach crusier, wearing a speedo and flip flops but besides being a scary sight it wouldn't be nearly as much fun to ME. I have an iron stomach and used to drink all sorts of sports drinks - LOL - mostly before I actually worked out to need them. But as I've gotten fitter and my diet better, those drinks are like death to my stomach. I can't drink Gatorade or Powerade any time around exercise. I usually feel like a knife is driven into my stomach about 15 min after drinking one. I swear it is all the artifical sweeteners and colors/dyes. Even chocolate milk w/ HFCS is bad for me. Try to stick w/ real food or a whey protein powder in a smoothie or milk. |
