Extreme Veteran 826 Bristow | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED I like the new pic! So I have been having to go RPE since Friday. Timex just went blank while on the my run. Under warranty so it was sent off and I should have a new one by Tuesday they said. Then Saturday it was nice so decided to take the bike outside. Switch the tire back to the road tire and off I went. about 45 mins in the ride was getting rough. I stopped to check and it was basically flat. No pump, CO2 so I went walking luckily this loop takes me near my house about that point. I had to walk back about 2 miles. Lesson learned, remember to put the saddle bag back on when I go outside for rides doh!! 1:30 Z1 on the bike done. Swimming later today. Hope everyone has a blessed day and gets to enjoy this great weather. |

My run was faster than I thought. It was a tough day for me, long swim, constant cross wind on the bike that kept picking up as the day went on (I wasn't helped by the fact that I went off in the 2nd to last wave) and serious heat issues on the run. I was complete mess for several miles, hot, dizzy, super high HR and just feeling miserable. It took a bag of ice down the front of my sports bra and a full dunk into a garbadge can full of ice water to get me feeling better. Plus I didn't see anyone with sunscreen in T2 so I was stupid and went out without sunscreen. I am now rather lobster-ish. Not my best half, but a good effort and good place marker for where I am right now. |

How in gods name do you deal with chaffing?!?!? I fear this will be my biggest PITA (and region), literally, for Lake Placid. Tomorrow swim in the chlorine rich Y pool is going to make me sing with tears Are you planning on changing into run shorts at Placid or running in tri shorts? |

Curious as to why? I thought that having a dry, clean (sweat/salt free) pair of shorts for the marathon would help. Maybe tri shorts are the way to go - I don't know, I've never done a full before. |

This brings up another embarrassing newbie question I have been wondering about - what should I wear to race in? I had thought about just bike shorts and a jersey, but then someone pointed out that the thick chamois in regular cycling shorts is like a wet diaper after the swim - not ideal. I know there are lots of tri-specific options, but is one setup recommended over another, i.e., one piece vs. two piece? Also, is it really an option to strip down to your dignity in T2 to change from bike gear to run gear? |

Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Tri shorts are kind of a must. There are no changing areas except at IMs. So you need something that you can go for all 3 disciplines at any other distance.
I've never done an IM, but I just don't see the need to change. By the time you get off the bike putting on fresh gear just seems like a lost cause. |

Definitely go with tri shorts. Tri shorts are designed to go from the bike to the run and changing shorts in T2 is a PITA. For all 5 IMs I've done I've worn the same things for the swim bike and run. Plus you are much less likely to have chafing issues in tri shorts than in run short. |

One piece versus 2 piece is a personal question. One pieces are more common at shorter distance and two pieces are more common at longer distances (its easier to use the bathroom in a two piece). Two pieces also help if your top and bottom are not the same size. |

52 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Good morning all, It's been a while since I posted. Scott, Kelly, and Jen - congrats on the races. I completed my half marathon a few weeks ago, and it was such a huge accomplishment for me. My last half marathon was over three years ago, before my daughter was born. I've been through a lot since then, and running has been healing for me. I have Kelly to thank for so many reasons. She is a phenomenal friend and coach. I wanted to race in under 2:00, and it was a hilly course. I completed this same race pre-baby and clocked about a 2:09. My race time this year was 1:58 change. Kelly paced me, as I typically blow up in the beginning and have nothing left at the end of the race. I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was at the end of this race. What a feeling of accomplishment. My time was about 4 minutes off of a PR. I am two weeks into my training for a June half marathon, and I look forward to continued improvement. I often have lots of doubts about my abililities, but Kelly has helped me to realize that I have more potential than I often give myself credit for. Thank you Kelly. I am so proud to be one of your athletes! |

Running based on RPE is to stressful for me. I am worried the whole time if I am running too hard, not hard enough, or just right. Today I think it was not hard enough but at least I got out and ran. |

You don't want me pacing an OWS swim. I tend to get distracted and swim all over the place. In the pool I'm a metronome, in the water, not so much. I think it can really help to have someone pacing you in general. Running to your potential is hard and its often a lot easier mentally to hold back, but when you have someone next to you pushing you on to the best of your ability (in Erica's case I knew she was capable of a 1:58 based on her training paces) it can really help.
