Hi Julie.  I finally found some time and have access to a computer....so a quick check in.   Sorry to hear about your friend.   You really did have a great run on Tuesday.  Now you know what you are capable of.

I'm not getting in as much running as I wanted to.  Hauling junk and furniture around was pretty hard work.  On top of that jet lag and a light cold kept me from getting motivated to venture out into the cold for a run in Buffalo (actually a place called Lackawanna - only Nicole is likely to have heard of that lovely little steel town).

I've since moved on to Houston to visit my sister.  The weather is decent (70s and a little humid) and I have gotten out for some exercise the past couple of days.

I hope everyone is doing well and getting in lots of good workouts.  I have not yet gone backwards to see what all I have missed, but will hopefully have a little more time this afternoon to catch up.

All for now....

Hey, how did you wind up living in Japan if I may ask ?........ just a curiosity thing.....I'm like that ! lol

Short version: I was living/working in Thailand for two years and a guy I had worked with in other places asked me if I wanted to work in Japan and manage the project he was overseeing.  That meant changing from being an engineer to being a manager.  I said yes (this was back in 1989) and have been here most of the time since then.   I'll tell the long version some other day.....

Thanks for the answer, I love to know about other folks lives.  Looking forward to the long version !

x2...

One of my coworkers and his wife will be doing their first triathlons next Saturday (300m pool swim, 10 mile bike, 5k run). They have not yet been on the road on a bike. They've been using spin/stationary bikes at the gym and will be borrowing bikes from a friend. He acknowledged that they only have this coming week to get any time on the bikes but was concerned about doing too much since he had read that you should be taking it easy the week before a triathlon. I stressed to him how important it is for them to be familiar with the bikes and to know that they can do the distance and that being well rested isn't a real option for them. Can you spell D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R ? They'd been talking about their *second* tri; I hope they will still want to continue!

funny! kinda!

ACTAULLY really scary - - especially to think  that you and I may be racing in races next to and around others who have never been on a bike besides stationary! I do wish them much luck...but I have to agree...get out there and ride and ride a lot!

so with that said...I need to swim so I am not that one in the tri that is four waves back trying to finish!

have a great day ALL...TRAIN WELL! and CHECK IN! time to hear from some of you....

Girl Passing on Left - 2009-03-25 10:40 PM

Offthegrid - 2009-03-25 5:21 PM I just got done taking the inaugural ride with my roommate, and my poor lungs hurt! OMG! I do NOT think she did it on purpose, because she was trying to find a short route for me, but she took me up this long, steady incline, and my heart rate hit near my RUNNING max of 187. The highest I've ever hit is 188 in the final sprint of a 5K or 10K. OMG! I just don't think that someone as fit as her can understand the limitations of someone like me with less experience and more weight to haul around. I am still coughing - not from being sick, but from my lungs hurting so much. Yowsers. Sooooo ... might be our last ride together for a while. I mean, yeah, I know I live in a valley and whatnot, but I just cannot be hitting my max HR when I'm supposed to be doing zone 2 rides right now. It's a bit disheartening, actually. But I'm trying not to sweat it. Interestingly, she said my cadence was really high. So maybe I'm not as much as a masher as I thought.

my husband does that to me EVERY ride Susie. Truly makes for a stronger rider! but not saying to push to max HR...but just slow down...and spin up the hill...

I wish I could have slowed down! I was in my smallest gear and I was going so slow I worried I was going to fall over! I just am not ready for hills like that ...

Today was a bunch of HTFU. And I feel really pleasantly tired and happy.

Started the day with a swim ... I did a 500 in 10:12, so I think I miscounted.

Went to the gym over lunch for a quick jog and weight lifting -- and GUESS WHO WAS THERE: the mayor! They were having like a ribbon-cutting or something. If I had known the mayor would be there, I would not have went. Oh, well.

Then after work I did the first week of my beginning women's running/walking program. It was HTFU to the max! Pouring rain and cold.

Hey, I earned my peach today.

I'm sorry I've been incommunicado this week.  Not sure it's going to get any better, either!  I've got lots of work-related travel coming up.  Hotels are not my favorite places...

Anyway, I did manage to do some fitness room workouts this week.  I'll be home for a few days next week, so I hope to get out on the road biking and running, plus some swimming added in!

I haven't had a chance to get caught up on everyone's posts, but I hope eveyou all have had a good week.  Keep training!!!

have a great day ALL...TRAIN WELL! and CHECK IN! time to hear from some of you....

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! dont make me name names.

This has been a really rough week work wise for me (actually it's been a CRAZY month).  Just trying to keep my head above water with one deadline after another.  Two more deadlines for the 31st - I'll be working all weekend but April is looking up.  I'm a legal nurse consultant at a large law firm and over the last 2 days, they have laid off roughly 15% of the secretarial staff (12 secretaries).  Scary times, so I guess I should be happy I have so much work at this point.  More layoffs to come, but at this point, I'm not too worried since I'm kind of specialized.  But who knows.  (I'm taking a short break from work right now.) I actually got dressed for my run this evening, then my oldest son called asking to borrow some money and to go "grocery shopping" in my kitchen.  My niece is flying in to town tonight to stay for a few days to go to a wedding.  I'm feeling like a slacker and hate that guilty feeling that comes over me when I can't keep up with my training schedule.  Just trying to push it out of my mind for the next few days, but April is new month!

Trying to keep up with all the going ons and will get back to everyone individually when I get the chance.  You are all such a great group!

Hope everyone has a great Friday!  Time to get back to work now!

Gotta love living/training at altitude....especially when it comes time to visiting ma and pa at sea level and going for a run! Wooohooo...hopefully the effects will last until Sunday- Helen, I might just see you at the race....went for dinner with my sister and some friends and found out that they have an extra bib for the Around the Bay so I need to make a couple of calls tomorrow to see if it will happen. Kinda funny considering I was just mentioning how it was the first road race that really got me excited about road running and now I have the chance to run it again.

Tomorrow is Friday....hope it's a great one!

I didnt get mine!!! ;(

Good morning all!

I started the day with a run in the fog; that's always interesting :)

They've reduced the chance of rain for tomorrow so I should be able to get in my maiden voyage on the tri bike. I got my red bar tape last night and got the bars rewrapped. Hopefully the new chain will arrive today. If not, I'm still gonna need to shorten the one that's on there before I can take it out.

Sunday I've got my birthday present swim clinic.

I may have people coming to look at buying my other bike  this afternoon or tomorrow. I will be sad to see it go :(

MDHillSlug - 2009-03-26 1:54 PM One of my coworkers and his wife will be doing their first triathlons next Saturday (300m pool swim, 10 mile bike, 5k run).

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! dont make me name names.

There were several participants at my first open water tri that had never swam in a lake before...they were fished out by the life boat because they freaked.... It is so much harder to swim in a murkey lake than a pool with clear water and lanes, you get very disoriented.
It is always a good rule of tumb to train like you are going to race if possible.

What exactly are the effects of training at altitude????

Lisa,
Your right April is a new month and a new start, all of us have little detours, some longer than other But we come back refreshed and ready to kick butt in training. Just checking when you can. Yes this is a great group!!!! Didn't I tell you so Very glad your here!!!!!

The way I understand it, there's less oxygen at higher altitudes so your body compensates by growing more red blood cells to help carry oxygen. When you go back down to sea level you end up with increased oxygen carrying capacity. Since muscles crave oxygen to do their job, and you've got extra oxygen capacity, they can do more work with less effort. Blood doping tries to simulate this effect.
