Greetings! LSAT this Saturday, my first really long run 18 miles on Sunday. And I'm still coughing. Guess I need some antibiotics? Oy. Well, anyway I hope everyone is well and staying warm. It's even a bit cool in Miami this morning. The Latin Music Rock n Roll Half with end of race music by Pitbull on Miami Beach is a week from Sunday. I'd like to be healthy for that. I didn't know who they guy was when they announced it, but now I know who Mr. 305 is and I guess it's a big deal. Me? I just want to do more running and less walking then my first half.

Got your xmas tree yet?

Congrats Steph on the 5K PR.  Enjoy the RnR half coming up and the long runs.  I need to get out for 18-20 miles this weekend and need to start hitting the trails if I'm going to enjoy Potowatomi in April.

I agree on the no IM two years in a row.  Kathy needs a break.  I've also realized you have to make a decision well in advance because these fill so quickly.  So, registered for Branson half IM in Sept. and maybe one other...plus short courses earlier as training.

This sport makes the calendar look WAY different! I'm already counting the number of WEEKS I have until my first Olympic in April!! What is Potowatomi?

A trail run.  They're offering three options, 50, 100, or 150 miles.  I'm planning to do the 100.  (I did the 50 in 2009 when it was called the McNaughton Trail Run.)  I refer to ultras as "outdoor buffets."  The past 2 years, I've run one of the aid stations for this race (they didn't offer the 150 mile option the last 2 years).

WOW! that's so cool. I love the trails and have a friend that has taken me to a couple of new ones here that I didn't know about. I have another friend who does this crazy ultra-stuff on the trails. She LOVE LOVE LOVEs it.

So what kinda snacks and goodies do you get at these aid stations? If I can survive the marathon, I'd like to do a half on a trail here. They offer them pretty regularly and it's so much nicer than asphalt.

You GO McFuzz!!!

Question:

My membership is up for renewal. The custom training plans NEVER work. I love to use the site to log my workouts, but I don't use the plans. I also love to keep up with what all you fuzzies are up to.

Do I really need a gold membership? I don't think so. So to 'log and fuzz', what's the lowest level I can do? I expire in 5 days. "poof"

I think I do bronze and that is only to support the site.  I don't get training programs from here.  I might print off a couple to show a couple of guys getting into it.  But that would be all.   it's mainly about just showing support.

I've been doing 1 to 2 hours on the bike nearly everyday with tempo, high cadence, single pedal drills and even some strength exercises with low cadence and high power like climbing hills.  All good.  Ran twice, once 5K and once 10K.  Feel sluggish at first but loosen up.

Last meeting with the doc on Tuesday.  I will get released for swimming then. Plan to add pool time with Masters, some indivvvidual coaching with a tri cocach for swmming, and maybe a personal trainer for a month or two to get my core solid again.

Signed up for Branson half IM in September and two short course races our club puts on here in June and July.  Might do one more half at Racine or Wisconsin Dells (Rev3 new one.)

The usual (fruit, bagels, sports drink which is usually HEED) plus:
M&M's
Cookies of various types
Pretzels, Corn Chips, Potato Chips
Grilled Cheese
Egg Salad
Ham & Cheese
Pizza
Hot Dogs
Hamburgers
Chicken Soup
Mashed Potatoes
Peanuts (I'd serve almonds too)
Raisins
Twizzlers
Jelly Beans
Gummy snacks
Quesidillas
Eggs

Run up to the aid station, grab a small handful (I served the foods in small souffle cups) of whatever appeals to you, chat for a minute, then head on down the trail.  Since it is a loop course (10 mile loop), I tried to introduce some new foods every couple of hours so the athletes would find something "new & different" each time.  I'd also take requests and ask for a target time for their next loop to have their request ready.  It can give the athlete a mental edge to know that some hot pizza is 25 minutes up the trail.

Since they run all night, I have tiki torches set up like runway lights and a string of christmas lights over the food (which gives them enough light to see, but doesn't screw up their night vision when they leave the station).

I think you can log workouts and keep up with all of us as a registered member (no cost).  I've paid for the Bronze to support the site and Ron has upgraded me a couple different times for helping him out.  (other than the advanced training plan that I "follow" I don't use the Gold level features either).

I'm in the same boat and expire at end of the month.  I'm just going to go with the no-cost level, which is what I used for the 1st year doing tri's.  You do get the ability to log workouts.  There's some limitations to the types of reports/graphs you can access, but if that's not a big deal to you, then you should be fine.

Pizza should be required at the finish line of every single race in the United States.  There is no other food that satisfies after a race like pizza.  I could be in real trouble if I could actually get it "on" the race course

BTW - I had a sliver membership last year, but then registered Ree, and dropped mine down to a free membership.  I still use all the same logs, etc as I did before.  I will keep at least one of us as a paid member to support the site.

As everyone can tell, I have been out of town for quite a while now, so pretty nonexistent on BT.  Since I am back now, and training is getting back up and going, I will be checking in more often now.

At the last big race I did this past summer, I made myself a deal.  I would only buy a set of aero rims, if I could hold an average pace of over 20mph.  At the Rev3 Cedar Point 1/2 iron distance race, my average speed was 20.2 mph... so you know what that means -  Misery got an upgrade.  I am attaching a photo of the bike with the new rims (80 mm w/ wheel builder disk -  Zipp Flashpoints - now known as SRam S80)  Add an aero helmet, and I will "look" like I know what I am doing.

Hot Dogs... now you're talking my language. My husband and I are going to try pickle juice in one of 4 water bottles on our next long run. I can't imagine 6 hours (my estimated finish) of sweet yuck for my marathon. I'm a savory person... if I never had another cookie or cake or candy in my life, I'd be fine. Maybe some soup...

Awesome looking bike!  I got Aerolus 5.0s this year and love them.

The pizza comment - I agree.  You long distance runners should take heed.  Karnazes eats pineapple pizza.  He calls ahead, has the pizza delivery guy meet him on his route, rolls up the pineapple pizza like a burrito and eats on the run.  Works for him!

Argh. I DNF'd my marathon yesterday.  Maybe it was a poor pace goal or poor race execution.. not sure which really, maybe both.  I made it to mile 19 fine, but then the wheels came off.  By mile 20 I went from 8:30 pace to 10 min + some walking.  I decided to call it a day and took one of the relay buses to the finish line.  Glad there were buses.  A smaller race would not have had that option.  I'm a little defeated at the moment.  Just looking forward to 3 weeks of unstructured recovery and rest before starting my off season workouts and setting new goals for next year.

Ugh! These things happen. I'm panicked for my first marathon coming up.

Sorry to hear about this, but no need to feel defeated- somedays we just don't have it.  Big picture - you've had a great season.
