Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got an hour bike in last night and an hour run this morning. Won't count the run in the challenge though since I'm short a rest day. Looks like Andy runs away with the challenge again. Great job! |

![]() | ![]() I'll do the August challenge, but only with protest. You guys cheat (by working out more than I do). |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in for an August challenge as well. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If we all had a training plan, it would be a great challenge to see who hits the closest to 100% of planned workouts. But I'll participate in whatever. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, Andy wins July!! Congratulations Andy, you are the victor in the second hottest month of the year. Impressive amount of workouts! I guess August's challenge is on, lots of takers so far. Love it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question for E and the group, In regards to race priorities for the upcoming months, I'm planning on doing 3 key races, each about a month apart: a 1/2 Marathon at the end of August, a 1/2 Ironman at the end of September and then the New York Marathon on Nov 4th, with a possible business trip to China at the end of October. So far I want to push for PR's on the 3 races and not have to prioritize one over the others, so I will call them all "A-" priority races. I'm hoping that the fitness/training from each race will complement the next one. Do you guys feel this is a reasonable plan or am I setting myself up for possible injury/disappointment? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() baurryman - 2012-07-31 6:22 PM ernestov - 2012-07-31 5:53 PM So... Challenge or not in August? Still training for a Tri in August and a Mary in October so I'm in. Are you doing the Oly distance Barry? I wish I were there for it, it's a great race. Same goes for Chicago Marathon - spectacular! My brother Lester will be doing the Chicago Oly with his son. Lester did this race back in 1980 something and this started my involvement many years later. In 2008 I dragged him into it and he's been doing it since. He still rides the same road bike (just recently changed the tires...)! Yes, we are old.

I'm hoping that the fitness/training from each race will complement the next one. Do you guys feel this is a reasonable plan or am I setting myself up for possible injury/disappointment? Races 1 and 2 should be no brainers based on your level of fitness an the strong cardio base you developed over the last year. Going sub 4 hrs in a marathon could be trickier (assuming that's the goal based on your log). It has been said before by E and Chris and I lived it first hand, the only way to train for a marathon is to, well, train for that race. A big cardio engine will get you to the finish line in fairly decent shape, but it may not you get you there at a PR (and the last six miles likely will suck). If you have to cut back in October due to work, then you run into an undertraining situation. Not saying that sub 4 hrs won't be possible, but being undertrained for a marathon and being possibly overtired reduces your risk of success. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() sirgab - 2012-07-31 10:46 PM Just like Joe wisely puts it, you just can't fake the marathon's mileage. The only way to make it through the wall without slowing down (at least not dramatically) is to adapt your body (musculo-skeletal adaptations) to the distance. The mental aspect you have it down, you know how to suffer well.Question for E and the group, In regards to race priorities for the upcoming months, I'm planning on doing 3 key races, each about a month apart: a 1/2 Marathon at the end of August, a 1/2 Ironman at the end of September and then the New York Marathon on Nov 4th, with a possible business trip to China at the end of October. The marathon training is not incompatible with your travel, running is something you can do anytime, anywhere. Not the same applies to the 1/2 IM training. Your bike is strong though and you WILL PR the 70.3 regardless. Focus on the running aspect though. As I have told you before, the missing component of your training is speed work. You do the tempo and long stuff just right, but there's still that missing part. Call me and we'll talk... |

![]() | ![]() Rest day for me. (as part of my marathon training plan). Gabe, Regarding marathon training, well, we will both see. I am giving myself 10 weeks to train for the Twin Cities (this is week 1). That seems the bare minimum to me and would definitely be insufficient if I weren't coming into it with triathlon training. (It might be insufficient anyway). I am following a 20 week Hanson 40/60 program (the 40 is miles per week at the beginning and the 60 is miles per week at the peak mileage week.) Basically, I am doing the 20 week program in 10 weeks by doing only the even weeks. But still, I am planning on getting about 500 miles in during those 10 weeks. Just make sure you follow a plan with the following components per week. 1) some kind of long run at about goal marathon pace plus 45 seconds to a minute. 2) some kind of marathon pace run. 3) some kind of speed or track work. Overall, however, the biggest thing I think is mileage. Unless otherwise specified, runs should be at MAF. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Greetings All!!!!! I apologize for my long absence and I hope you all will allow me to return to the forum. I was in such a funk and almost in a state of depression after returning from the fires..... But today marked a new beginning and positive outlook. I went for a run, and although slow with an elevated HR I was so happy to be back out there again! So I know I missed a ton, But can I return? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 56 mile bike ride this morning, would have liked to do more but the heat is just rising too fast. I'm glad my one workout yesterday was enough to hang on! I was planning on biking last night with the sprint group but instead was asked to spend an extra 2 hours on the ice helping with goalie evaluations for a Junior A level hockey team. They had 15 goalies show up for 3 spots. It's tough, I really wanted to do that bike ride last night but it was the "right" thing to do to stay out on the ice and help.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This evening I raced a little Criterium race, my hottest race ever at 110 degrees. It felt like a giant blowdryer to my face but I liked it. Because my most immediate goal is consistency, which i will achieve by following my training plan, I will add % of plan followed for each week for August challenge. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() E, Joe and Chris, thanks for your comments and the good advice. I agree that I need to get in the marathon training (long runs, speed work and tempos) in order to have a decent chance of finishing in under 4hrs. I will also focus on adding good speed workouts which I started today morning. Way to go Jim, 1st day and already 3 workouts! Today a good interval session at the track (20x400m) + 50 min recovery drainer workout Jim S 1/ B 1/ R 1 Rest 0 Total 3 Time 2:32:36
