This will be my 4th IMLP and I feel more ready than I ever have. I rode 8 laps of the bike course and feel like I know every bump and rough spot out there. The MOST IMPORTANT thing was getting nutrition plan down, I have learned the hard way all the training in the world won't help you if you get dehydrated or run out of fuel during the run. This year I am keeping it simple and it worked during this week of training. My only advice to first timers is practice your nutrition and keep it simple! Good luck to all and stay safe! Holy sheet! 40 hrs! A little jealous here, but sorta not! ha! |

Regular 847 Akron | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread so frustrated since the beginning of the year. ONe injury after another. This has never happened to me before. I've followed the 10% rule pretty close and always make myself take a recovery week. I guess this year is just not my year. Anyhow, my running has always been my strong point, but it has been so inconsistent during IM training from the injuries. I've been lucky to keep up with biking and swimming and feel I have a very good base there. My question to you all is since we are in the last few weeks before the taper I'm taking this week off from running for my ankle issue. I'm hoping to run the following wknd (June 30). I just don't know how much I should run for the long run if it works out. Any suggestions? I've been able to get 2 16 milers in thus far. This is an old ankle injury that flares up from time to time (an old sprain that healed stretched). Getting a x ray this week just in case. Will someone please take my black cloud away! Finished 103 miles riding, 15 miles of running this weekend and finally felt relatively good! And finally no lower GI issues on my run, thank goodness! Switched away from Gu Roctane gels (trying Clif and they are GOOD; you have to try the vanilla flavor if you haven't). Also didn't eat a boat load after my long ride yesterday even though I wanted to...but I think it saved my stomach on the run this morning. Time to eat up now! Annie, I am #678! I agree about the good luck |

Veteran 671 Harrison, Oh | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread REALLY good training weekend for me! I guess that extra rest day on Friday paid off. I think I have my nutrition back on track (what has worked in my previous 2 IM finishes, has NOT been working the past few weeks). I felt MUCH, MUCH better on my long ride today and it showed on my run at the end (still slower than I'd like, but felt really good). Mentally, this could not have come at a better time (I was really starting to freak out). I hope you all had some good runs/rides this weekend, too! Member 22 Tallahassee, Florida | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Question for Group.
This is my first IM and my training has been going well, excepting a few aches/pains which are to be expected. I am following the Fink Plan (intermediate with some of the competitive plan mixed in on the long stuff on the weekends), however, like others I have pretty much stopped going to the track and doing intervals. Just sticking to the time. My question is this, on July 4 there is a sprint tri in our area. It is a generally a low key fun event (to the extent that triathletes can be low key). The swim is .25, the bike is 10 flat and the run is 5k. As the 4th is on a Wednesday I was planning to do the race as my workout for the day. However, all of this talk about injuries is spooking me a little bit. Any thoughts as to whether competing in this short race so close to IMLP is unwise or just another training day. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

This was my Bible Devotional today I was encouraged by it so I figured someone else would be as well enjoy!! Psalm 44:7 You give us victory over our enemies; you put our adversaries to shame.
THERE IS A WINNER'S DNA INSIDE YOU. Even when you've endured awful things, there is a spark within you that resists giving into defeat. It's the thing that makes you get up again after begin knocked down. It's the inner warrior that refuses to quit and puts on the gear for one more go-round. God salutes that. He is cheering you on, inspiring you to stand up. Defeating something big in your life that's been hounding you is God's line of work. Take a minute and think about your picture of God. In that view, has He ever lost? Are the forces against Him ever bigger or greater than He is? Have you heard any stories about that time God almost made it but went down in the last round? NO! Those stories don't exist. God is the most decorated warrior in history. So, does God care about your battles? Empathetically, YES! God cares and is on your side for your success. Your God is a God who saves. He is a tide-turner and a game-changer. When you're up against it, ask Him how to respond like the winner He's making you to be. Then be alert for His encouragement. |

I don't think you can attribute a race to injury. If you asked the group if hang gliding or parachuting was unwise I would tell you yes. This weekend of the race is probably your last long ride before you start tapering, at least it's mine so you may want to forgo the race if that's the case.... or get back on your saddle and ride the same or next day. There will always be more races, I am not sure I would be giving up a much needed 5-6 hour ride for a sprint. Especially since you're probably in for a good 2500 so far for Placid. ETA: in Summary, it's not unwise from an injury perspective, it's unwise from a training perspective.... IMO. Edited by BooTri 2012-06-18 8:17 AM |

Member 75 Huntley, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Question regarding racing apparel for the Ironman:
Second; usually, I wear my tri top under my wetsuit, which is fine. But, if it isn't wetsuit legal, I hate swimming in my tri top because it has pockets and I feel like it drags. What do others wear in cases like this? Shorter distance/warmer triathlons I will wear a tri suit (one piece) but I am definitely not doing that for IMLP. Females: what brand of tri top do you wear? Also, I was thinking of investing in "compression" shorts. Any suggestions/recommendations? Are they really beneficial? |

Wow I'm 1669, I'm not sure how they assigned the numbers but you can't get any closer than that, that's pretty cool that we find out so early.
Awww man you are in my age group what the %#@!$ , There goes my first place finish in my age group. My last name is Kuder so it's a little ways away from yours. It's all good as long as I get a number I'm happy, that means it wasn't just a dream that I signed up. haha... don't worryabout me for that...although I am going to strategically place my midget minions on the run course to dart out and attack anyone in my AG. Hopefully they can hold everyone in front of me off.... for 4-5 hours... haha |

Also, I was thinking of investing in "compression" shorts. Any suggestions/recommendations? Are they really beneficial? I train and race in tri shorts... this weekend I rode the run course Thu, 1 loop bike course Fri and 2 loops Saturday, all in tri shorts and was good. I even ditched the DeSoto 400's with IMLP in mind. I doubt it will be wetsuit illegal but may be wetsuit optional as it was last year. In that case I will wear my wetsuit. IMO unless you are going for a KQ why dump the suit? This happened with a few people last year and a couple people didn't make the swim cutoff... I know you are a great swimmer and that probably won't happen to you... more of a general statement to the group. I'm a 1:30 swimmer more than likely... maybe 1:20-1:25 with the immense draft that will be produced... but I'd rather swim that with a suit then 1:45-1:50 sans suit and be bushwacked after the swim. for what to wear under the suit, maybe a sports bra or the like? Then you can get your tri top on in T1??? |

For some reason, when I did my HIM (Ironman sponsored) last year, I read that "no mid drifts or chest could be exposed." Which I doubt is true? I saw multiple guys without anything on top for the swim (the race was wetsuit optional). Can't say the same for the women! :p And if the race is wetsuit "optional" I will have a hard time deciding. I am definitely not going for any award/Kona spot, but to be honest, I really like swimming without my wetsuit versus with it. Any excuse to take that hot/cumbersome thing off, I will. haha I have quite a memory for things and y our bike isn't really hard to pick out.... I think I saw FatBastard on the bike loop Friday wearing his bulldog jersey but he was going the opposite direction as me.
Thur we biked the run course... Fri I did 2600 yard swim, 1 loop of bike and a 30 minute run Sat was 2100 yard swim, 2 loop of bike and a 1 hour run Sun 2.5 hour run I cannot wait to hit that bike course taperd and fresh. I loved the Keene decent getting up to 52 MPH. I used my 11/28 cassette all weekend and although I made it feeling good I am going to go with the 12/32. I found myself to really not need my 11 and when I did use it I was using unecessary power output and pushing out big watts. So in my mind common sense tells me an easier gear for a 112 mile bike is more beneficial than a harder gear I will rarely use. Plus I still have to run a marathon after. The 12/32 will not hurt me at all during the bike but will actually help me during the run. I am headed up Wed morning the week of the race, so if anyone wants to put together a swim or run or easy bike I am up for it. |

That's just me. I feel I have much better maneuverability and range of motion without it. They were going to institute a rule for MEN only that no mid drifts could be exposed, women were exempt from that because of their anatomy. The reason for that is because the WTC said it gave men an unfair advantage over women going topless. But after discussion the WTC has shelved that ruling. I think this was more for the bike and run than the swim. Have you access to a sleeveless wetsuit? or maybe can rent a 'Jane' suit that has sleeveless arms and legs. I would love to be as confident in the water as you but that is just my own fault. I think I fall back on my asthma and allergies too much. If I swim 'too hard' my chest feels like it is going to explode then my stomach hardens and I have a hard time getting back into rhythm. Then once I get out of any lake I proceed to sneeze uncontrollably and my nose stuffs up. So I have 1 swim pace... 1:55-2:05... but rumor has it the draft is amazing at placid and if you are FOP-MOP swimmer it can help knock of 5-10 seconds per 100. I am sure the BOP will have that help on the first loop but less on the 2nd. |
