Extreme Veteran 490 Higganum, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Question on Race Plan versus Recovery: My Race plan for this year, is mainly to do various events as training for Lake Placid, and not to taper and properly prepare for any event - rather "train through" the events as they happen. That being said, and also having some level of the Typical Type A personality, when I get into the start - it's all out for me. Foeget HR zones, heck, I'm lucky if I can pace myself for the distance to finish. The HM last Sunday was 90 minutes at an ave HR of 166bpm, and my legs (3 days later) still feel the effects(affects). My next HM is on April 28 - just 21 days post Danbury HM. Is that enough time in between to recover enough to avoid injury? I don't want to end up with shin, knee, ITB, plantar issues going into May (2 months out from IMLP). This is the start of my 3rd season running HM distances. Any thoughts? Thank you Edited by cobratodd 2013-04-10 12:22 PM |

Thank you So it appears to me that you're treating everything as I would define a "C" race. "A" race would be IMLP. "B" races I would put at the end of rest weeks in training as to give you a faux taper. "C" races are just another training day with competitors. I'd find something that you want to test. Maybe it's the restraint to run at you're IM pace, but find something that you've been working at to judge yourself by other than where you finish. Trust me that I know this is tough, but in the long run IMLP is the goal not a local HM. |

Maybe it's the restraint to run at you're IM pace, but find something that you've been working at to judge yourself by other than where you finish. Trust me that I know this is tough, but in the long run IMLP is the goal not a local HM. The (potential) problem with a bunch of "C" races (especially when training for a HIM or IM) is the recovery debt they create. Take participating in a HM instead of doing your weekly long run. When you go off on your long run, you generally stay at an aerobic pace (which is slower than your "racing" HM pace) and are able to recover fairly quickly (this goes back to the whole idea that training load = intensity x volume). If you race a HM, you are going to push yourself. It happens. There are lots of other competitors, you have adreniline flowing and you know that you can catch the guy in front of you. Its very hard to hold back at a race, especially for competative types. Because you push yourself, the intensity is high and it takes longer to recover, which impacts (see I used impact to avoid the affect / effect issue) your ability to get in quality training in the next week (essentially you'll loose quality in your training because you have a recovery debt). Like Scott said, I like to schedule races at the end of rest weeks. You get a pseudo-taper. your body is fairly fresh going into the race and you can plan for a few easier days post race to recover. While you likely won't get injured by racing HMs 3 weeks apart, you're likely going to partially compromise your training for IMLP. |

You need to remember what's important. If running 52 HMs in a year is important, by all means, run a HM every weekend. If suceeding at an "A" race is important, sometimes you need to sacrifice other things. |

If suceeding at an "A" race is important, sometimes you need to sacrifice other things. This is kinda where I'm heading. I'd much rather just do the big A race and pass on all the little guys. I'm dealing with what Todd is dealing with - DOMS - and now I most likely won't be able to do my run repeats tomorrow due to the muscle soreness. Now I'm thinking my HM should have been just another training run even though it came after a recovery week, and then I'd be refreshed going into this new block instead of feeling like an enormous disaster area. Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Sweet. I was able to do the mile repeats. I was slower than I wanted to be, but I got it done. I have a few areas that need attention (stretching, rolling, and ice) but that's about it. Tabatas later. Another mouse ran across the floor while I was in the basement and my HR shot up 10 beats. LMAO Why am I so scared of these harmless little creatures? Wish I weren't allergic to cats. Off to call the exterminator again. |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED So I had to run last night around 930 after my ride and it was raining and kind of cold. I wore a loose shirt with a light windbreaker. Felt fine during the run but this morning I have significant sensitivity issues....hurts to wear a shirt. Never have experienced this before....My daughter asked me this morning why I was moving so funny...I explained....she said "Um, Dad, TMI." I replied by saying perhaps she was correct. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED I'm sure the Project Rudy helmets are really nice but they're pretty expensive too. The Wing Span is like $375 vs a Giro Advantage 2 for $125. I can't see it being 3X better. I'm probably going to spring for a new helmet this year as well. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Hour trainer and 3 mile run in the books. Tomorrow 30 minutes in recovery zone and a 2-3K swim depending on how I feel. Then Saturday off. I feel like this has been a very productive recovery week at the right volume and intensity that should set me up well for two weeks in which I plan to really push myself because the week after will be with the family in Disney and completely off from training minus core work which I plan on doing every day while away. |
