To be honest, whenever I finish a race, I feel a huge sense of accomplishment...Completing a bigger race leads to a feeling of beating impossibility! Laughing

Here's a pic of my bike after getting it fit.  The handlebar drop + aero bars are the biggest change.  I'm kinda glad I got a smaller frame now.  It made the tri fit work.

Yeah, another Fuji Fan. I like it, nice ride. Hopefully it will warm up a bit for you and you can get it back out on the road.  I'll have to post a pic of mine after I redo the handlebar tape.  Currently I have some black stuff on it, but it will be replaced for the season with the "Kevin's Bacon" from Raleigh. Makes it easy to pick it out in a transition area. And it keeps with my personality.

Hmmm. I'd be interested only if it were scratch n' sniff.

Bacon lovers check my log. Yummmmmmm!

Have you ever had a BACON EXPLOSION

That's insane! But it brings up a good Manatee question. How do you like your bacon? I like crispy, not burned.

On someone else's plate.

WHAT!!??!?!?!?!!? Surprised

Me, too. I've been vegetarian for a month now. I'm transitioning to vegan. Ohhhh. Cheese. :-(

ETA: But I can't say I miss bacon. I ordered a veggie/cheese omelet a few weeks ago and it came with bacon inside. I didn't notice it until I had the bacon on my fork and half way to my mouth. It is good bacon, too, at this restaurant. At first I said, Oh, well. Just eat it. But I picked it all out of my omelet. I didn't even have one taste. Will power.

I've played around with being a vegetarian before, but find it hard to keep it up. I found myself relying on various Morningstar " chicken" patties and the like for dinner. Then all of a sudden my blood pressure was high - it's normally very low, and realized the amount of sodium in what I was eating was through the roof. After cutting them out, I slowly went back to meat at dinner. I buy mostly organic stuff; man is that pricey! Still mainly no meat for breakfast and lunch and am thinking of trying giving it up for dinner again. If only I had a cook!I'm thinking of giving up meat at dinner again.

amd723 - 2013-03-07 6:19 PM I spent this afternoon putting out a fire that didn't actually exist - the person who pulled the alarm got his facts wrong, but before I figured that out I wasted a ton of time tracking things down, got others involved in the mess and expended energy cursing out judges ( under my breath) that didn't deserve cursing out! When I got home there was an Irish Wolfhound puppy ( with owner) walking pass my house, so I spent 15 minutes getting my fill of puppy kisses. The puppy made everything better I love Irish Wolfhounds, they are one of the breeds I would own in a heart beat if their life expectancy wasn't so short. Now back to the bacon discussion.

I feel for you Ann-Marie, I had the same type of day. Only mine was not a non-existent fire, mine is that my division is unable to function without shooting itself in the foot.  So I get to figure out what the IT dept changed so that people in 4 banks can work.

But, much like your dog visit made you feel, my trail run did for me.

I hope that your evening is much better and your tomorrow is better still!!!!

I know - I think medical knowledge advances so fast we can't keep up with the latest news/fad whatever!

I am trying this no grains no sugar thing that Vinnie Tortorich promotes...he's an ultra cyclist...so energy clearly not a problem.  I'm not jumping in though blindly, I'm gonna listen to all he has to say first (all 102 podcasts worth).

I know back in the day I tried Atkins as a way to lose weight - I lost 11lbs in a week and initially felt sluggish but so long as I kept exercising I had enough energy.

This is not as hard core as Atkins I think...I will keep you all posted.

The no grains no sugar thing is a lifestyle choice, not a diet - I suppose much like going paleo or vegan or whatever.

Cool day in manatee land. I found out more stuff about people and didn't even have to ask a single question.

We made bacon wrapped pineapple chunks for a party we had last month. Wrap some bacon (1/2 a slice) around a chunk of pineapple, sprinkle on a bit of brown sugar, place on a raised tray and bake at about 375 for 20 minutes or so, until crisp (or not crisp, if that is how you like it). Let cool a bit, serve on a large tray and watch the smiles begin!

Before you think I am a huge bacon eating guy, I have to say that all of this is done in moderation. I am yet to eat my bacon explosion that I got for my birthday last year. And the last bacon I had was the ones described above. But goodness gracious, does the aroma ever make me happy?!?

Artemis - 2013-03-07 1:45 PM I ordered two new pairs of shoes today: new everyday shoes and new running shoes.  My new running shoes are charcoal and pink! Nothing gives you motivation to start running again like new cute shoes.

New running shoes are the cure for whatever ails you. Enjoy them.

amd723 - 2013-03-07 6:19 PM I spent this afternoon putting out a fire that didn't actually exist - the person who pulled the alarm got his facts wrong, but before I figured that out I wasted a ton of time tracking things down, got others involved in the mess and expended energy cursing out judges ( under my breath) that didn't deserve cursing out!

On days when you can't run to get rid of the stress, I highly recommend puppy kisses! Hope your Friday is better too.

Nothing makes you feel better after a crap day like puppies do, even if they have chewed up your shoes and peed on your carpet

Ok so I went for a swim today and it felt like I was swimming through concrete. It just took so much effort.

I have been reading my swim smooth book (and loving it) and I have realised there is so many "little" things wrong with my stroke like my hand entry, my catch and pull, my kick and my body rotation. The problem is that I can't concentrate on fixing them all at once because as soon as I focus on one I revert back to old methods in the other. So my question is which one do I start with?

Oh and why am I always so hungry after a swim?

The problem is that I can't concentrate on fixing them all at once because as soon as I focus on one I revert back to old methods in the other. So my question is which one do I start with?Oh and why am I always so hungry after a swim?

Last question first - yes swimming is the sport that makes me hungry.  After a run or a rare ride I'm not hungry at all - in fact have to wait to eat.  Swimming - don't stand still I may eat you.

so first question - I'm no coach can just tell you what my coach did with me.  First thing he fixed was my kick.  I kicked like a runner, lots of bend in the knee etc.  He figured I was bending the left knee a lot when I turned to breathe (left side breather).  He got me to change to right side breathing - fixed that up.  for my kick he told me to focus on not kicking that way i just do a natural two beat kick.

The next thing he worked on was relaxing my fingers.  I am old school taught where we used to cup our hands.  relaxed fingers not tight.

After that he got me to go wider with my stroke - to feel like I'm aiming way out wide, got me to the right spot.

Then on the back end of my stroke I was too wide, so he got me to touch my top of thigh/hip on the end of my stroke.

This all took months - some days it all comes together, others not so much.  His focus now is deeper with those hands Jojo.  I still got a ways to go.

Yay for the veggies among us!

2KM SWIM - can I call it OWS - it was an outdoor pool....really enjoyed it.

Going to run in the heat a bit tonight, just a short one.

Last night I saw an owl - that was amazing!!  I got bit by a spider and ate a bug.  Hmmm.

rrrunner - 2013-03-07 1:37 PM I've been following the Ketosis thread. It interests me when people decide to go on an "extreme" diet. All meat, no meat, I think they have validity but it's funny that they are so different, and yet similar. I'll stick with moderation but I do focus on "real" ingredients, organic when available. (DH is from Wisconsin. Vegetarian/vegan would be grounds for divorceLaughing)

Back when I first started my life changing journey (originally the motivation was to lose weight).... I was doing research about different diets, and I came across a blog comment that I will never forget.  Someone wrote "Eat whatever you want, just eat 1 serving."

If you can stick to that, and count the calories, you will start to not like junk food as much, because 12 potato chips just doesn't fill you up for the calories you get counted towards your daily goal.

Best advice I ever read.

So when did you start and give us a summary - !!

Very summarized version:

Post separation from an 11 year marriage (13 years together), I was gaining weight, very unhappy, eating like crap and drinking to much.  I was almost 40... Grandpa and Dad both had their first heart attacks in their 40's and one day it hit me.... I'm not heading in a good direction.

Always hated running, decided to lose weight, so I started running.  Couldn't run 1 mile on a tread mill.  That was at the end of August 2011.  Found a love for running that I never had before...and since I grew up a competitive swimmer and cyclist..I decided to do an Ironman (as a kid, I always dreamed of doing one.)  Started training for that in Feb 2012...Finished my first in August 2012.

For those of you who haven't visited my blog.....here are my before (July 2011) and after (2/20/13) pics.

I agree with you, actually. Lately, however, meat has been making me feel yucky. I don't know how else to describe it. Maybe it's a sign of old age. My digestive system likes me much better if I leave it out. I figured, "Hey, if no meat makes me feel better, then maybe no animal products would make me feel even better." This is extreme for me. And hard. I love my half and half. I crave Greek yogurt. I love soft cheeses. Mmmmm. Home made French toast, heavy on the eggs.

In any case, I'll see how it goes. If I don't like it, I can always add stuff back in. I'm not doing it for ethical reasons, just health reasons.

I'm definitely an "everything in moderation" kind of person who really tries to eat a ton of plants and avoids overly processed foods when possible.

The idea of giving up meat, however, makes me feel anxious. I have deep carnivorous roots. Sometimes I feel like a wild animal when I get meat cravings. If you have ever seen A Christmas Story, the way the dad is obsessing over the turkey, trying to eat it before it gets cooked and stuff. That's me.

X2... I'm like that guy in the Wendy's commercial... when the woman offers him some of her salad, he replies "No thanks, I'm a meatatarian"

kgore - 2013-03-07 2:15 PM Well, I officially got the day okayed at work. In October I will be doing my very first half marathon. I am freaking out a little.  That is all.

Very exciting! And I second everyone else, a HM is a really fantastic distance to train and race. You have some wiggle room in your training yet a real feeling of accomplishment when you finish. Really, the perfect race Smile

Woo Hoo - Just Do EEEEETTTT !  Your "pod" will definitely be rooting for you.

amd723 - 2013-03-07 6:19 PM I spent this afternoon putting out a fire that didn't actually exist - the person who pulled the alarm got his facts wrong, but before I figured that out I wasted a ton of time tracking things down, got others involved in the mess and expended energy cursing out judges ( under my breath) that didn't deserve cursing out!

A run is a cure all but something about trail running brings me to a whole different level.

Agreed.  I just discovered Banner Forest out here in the Peninsula.  Have you ever run there Salty?  Great Trails.

Tough to answer without seeing a video but in general I would say

  1. Kick
  2. Body Rotation
  3. Catch and Pull
  4. Hand Entrty

Video would really help...because your kick may not be as bad as you think, or maybe your pull is throwing everything off (if it's more down than back).

Happy to do an analysis of the video, and slow it down for you.
