Planned rest day today. Pretty sure this was the first time I've ever run 7 straight days and my body is thankful for a day off.

I have been off the bike and running as I dropped my motorcycle on my big toe the other day. I am kind of hobbling around the house now but I dont know if I can hack riding a bike as I dont think I will be able to bear putting the shoes on, certainly no chance of running. I will be losing the nail for sure and right now the toes is just multiple shades of purple and even pressure from walking is still a little painful.

I threw on some flat pedals and tried it with a pair of crocs. Doesnt seem horrific but the Intensity will have to be lower as I cant really push hard on the pedals without jamming my toe in the shoe. Better than nothing I hope.

Put 1 hr on the trainer.

Finished my first official week of Boston training with a 10 mile run yesterday.

I just picked up a Garmin Vivoactive to replace the Fenix3 I returned a while back. I kept hoping Garmin would solve the GPS issues with the Fenix but after several months of updates it appears they will never get it right on that watch. I read somewhere that the GPS chip is directional, so it has a hard time maintaining a signal when it's not pointed directly up at the sky. Seems like an odd feature for a device that is explicitly designed for numerous activities where this is isn't the natural hand position. Anyway, Amazon and Best Buy both have the Vivoactive on sale for $199 with the HR monitor, so I decided to give it a try. I know it doesn't have a specific triathlon mode but I've come to the realization that it's not that important to me. I've never once tracked a swim and I have enough to think/worry about while swimming in a race without trying to look at my watch, so I believe the bike and run modes will be adequate. Also there are some 3rd party triathlon apps available that I might try out eventually.

So far I like that the Vivo has the same customization options as the Fenix through app, widget and data field downloads, as well as all the smartphone notifications. The big trade-off for me is the aesthetics - I'm not a big fan of the square Apple watch style of the Vivo and will likely never wear it as a day-to-day watch, whereas the Fenix looks awesome as an everyday watch. But that's just my personal preference, lots of people seem to like the square look.

For reference I also looked closely at the Suunto Ambit3 and TomTom Multisport Cardio, since I would've been happy to get away from Garmin, but both had too many quirks and the price was right on the Vivo.

Tonight will be my first run in it so we'll see how it goes.

Dave L, sorry to hear about you toe, is it any better yet?

Dace C, how are you liking your Vivoactive?  I have the Fenix 3 and love it for training, as well as a day to day watch and have not had any issues with the GPS.  However, I did have issues with the battery life as it died on my 8 hrs into Ironman Arizona which sucked, and has been randomly loosing power quicker than normal several times.  Garmin support is really good and I'm getting them to ship me a replacement unit, so we will see how it goes.

Adding a 1hr easy paced run with hill repeats

Tender, Its actually the flexing of the toe that is the most painful so walking is okay but I cant go too long, running is out for now. Biking is okay because the shoes are stiff soled and I cant really flex the toe. The Dr said I would lose the nail but it doesnt look too bad right now. I am anticipating another week until being back to 100%.

thanks for asking.

I've used the Vivoactive for a trainer ride and an outdoor run and so far I really like it. Very easy to set up and customize (much like the Fenix3). I ran this morning in dense clouds and steady rain and it lost my pace once or twice while under tree cover, but for the most part it seemed spot-on. Even though I don't love the shape of it, it's surprisingly light and comfortable while running. It only allows 3 data fields per screen whereas the Fenix allows up to 4, but so far that seems to be plenty, especially since you can cycle through 3 screens per activity. I can't really comment on battery life yet. I charged it out of the box on Sunday and it's only gone down a tiny bit but the GPS has only been on for my 38 minute run this morning.

I'm glad you've been happy with your Fenix3. I really wish I could've kept mine but running pace is the most important feature for me and it was inaccurate from the beginning. I could've tried another unit but to be honest I didn't have the patience to go through the back-and-forth with Garmin over GPS accuracy in a $500 watch. I know there are lots of people out there who have no issues with their Fenix3 but unfortunately I wasn't one of them!

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
