Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JoePetto - 2012-08-03 12:19 PM A misconception some have is that every workout has to leave you drained either by intensity or duration. So, you are right, they may feel too easy sometimes but the training effect is still there. Marathon training is duration (long runs at slow pace), threshold (tempos), speed (intervals) and support muscles (hills, drills, flexibility, etc.). If you miss any of the four, it will become evident on race day. A good marathon is the one that you negative split the second half and doesn't significantly slow down (or at all) after the infamous wall.6M pace run. Chris - Looked at the Hanson Plan as well. Any day not designated for pace, tempo or hills, I'm running slow at MAF. Last year, I did the FIRST plan and it just didn't have enough slow days. Sometimes they feel too easy, but I know that they are not junk miles. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jealous of you guys training for marathons. Decided yesterday that I have only one race on the calendar for rest of the year (Sprint Triathlon) and I'm not sure I'l race the run portion. I'm going to follow my run rehab training plan for a few more weeks and if I don't feel noticeable improvement in all facets of my leg then I'm not sure I'll run until winter. Depending how the leg feels will determine if I race the run portion of the Sprint. Other than that I don't want any pressures on myself to achieve any goals - other than getting healthy and getting back to running 25 to 30 miles per week in a healthy fashion. This will also allow me to give the MAF philosophy a full try without any pressures to do speed or tempo workouts to prepare for a race. I guess I'll live vicariously through the teammates who are racing this fall! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got in 2500 in the pool today, felt really good and I had an interesting observation. When you try and relax and not go out too hard, you can achieve the same pace as when you think you're aiming for a certain pace. I always do 600 to warm up, and I always end up going a little harder than I want to and finish up just over 9 minutes. Today I tried to swim more relaxed, easier breathing and at what I thought was a slower pace, finished in 9:22. Five months before my first tri I tore my medial meniscus, got scoped and put in a lot of PT. Struggled to answer the question whether I could do "it". You already know you have "it" in you. Stay the course and heal, it does get better but it can be a slow process. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() New tropical storm named "Ernesto "!!! I wonder why. E, thanks for the lecture. I love that you've never held back with me. I didn't mean I wasn't going to work. I really meant I didn't want to overtrain or do something stupid in my training to get sick/hurt. But I got the message. I'm working. Chris, funny thing was I had already looked at your logs and written down what you did as a sort of plan for me. I think my issue is how to successfully transition from the Olympic to the HIM distance. Nutrition just complicates it for me. I've recently found out that I don't even take enough nutrition in on my short rides. That explains why I'm always starving at the end of my rides. However, I got my new waterproof iPod in the mail this afternoon and I went out to test it with a 3000m swim tonight. My wife lost her phone somewhere on her 18 mile run this morning so we went out and rode where she ran and tried to locate the missing Iphone. No luck, but at least I got a ride in!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a relatively easy weekend. 5k Parkrun race on Saturday with my son ( I beat him) which I managed in 23:59. Not all out, but decent effort for me. This morning was a 50k MTB ride in cold (5c) weather. Still feel the chill in my bones. How could I have ridden on the snow in Chicago, I don't know. Bikes are meant for warm weather. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got in my 3500 in the pool this morning, the problem is I did it faster than what my training plan had down for time. I know with running, for example, most agree that the BT plan calls for time, and the distance is just given for planning purposes. However with swimming, since the plan has a very specific workout, should I just keep with the yardage and not worry about time? I'll still say I'm at 100% of my plan for the month, in fact I'm well over 100% since I've already ridden and run extra. Had a nice 17 mile bike ride as well, commuting to the Y for my swim then taking the long way home. Chris, congrats on getting over 1000 miles so far this year. Pretty impressive, that's my goal for the entire year right there!

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife suckered me out the door for a run tonight, so I decided to do a test and see if I can still run at a faster pace. I've been doing all of my runs for the past month or two at 10:00-11:00/mile pace which has been great because I've been without injury. I decided tonight I would do a 30 minute run at a faster pace and see what happens, and see if I can still run at a faster pace. I'm happy to report no pain or injury so far, I ran 3.6 at an avg. of 8:31/mile which is fast, for me.
