68 miles on the bike trail today. Averaged 16.8mph, which means I was speeding at all times (speed limit is 15mph). :D

Anyone who has seen me drive would not be surprised.

Have a good week, all.

After your 'dodgy ticker' time off, do you really need much of a taper? I'd think more 'race sharpening' is on the cards.

Yes...my five week taper.  LOL

All short sharpy workouts went well this week.   I debated training hard straight through, but I'd rather be a little under than over trained for a sprint.

Well done, Gretchen.  That power meter deserved to die.

Enjoy it while you can, they’ll soon leave home and you’ll wonder what to do with all that spare time! So, race day tomorrow. As I wrote before, not my A race so it will be a training session with focus on run and transitions. It’s a new race so that’ll will count as a win for 2024 Nat (unless I DNF) Been practicing transitions yesterday and it felt great. Running went well this week too so I am hopeful. Goal S 390 m 8:19 @ 2:08 min/100 meters (same as last week) T1: 1:30 hard to tell because I don’t know how big the transition area is so hope I can grab a few seconds here B: 18k at 30kph : 36 minutes (if it’s hilly, I may lose time here) T2: 1:00 (see T1) R: 4.2k at 5:30/ km = 23:06 minutes (hoping for flat-ish course) Total 1:09:55. previous years' winning times where about one hour but 2nd and third about 1:08-1:09 so I'll have a shot at it. Although it's not my main goal, as it depends on who turns up or doesn't, it's always fun to be on the podium. Happy Friday!

Good luck tomorrow!

Mike and Nat—how did it go?

1:45 long run for me today. Felt good, even after 68 miles on the bike yesterday. I was surprised it fet that good. Z1/Z2 running is nice.

@Gretchen:  I'm tomorrow, Nat is/was today.

Predictions for tomorrow:

15-ish swim (should be wetsuit-legal so that helps), 14 would be better and well within my reach if I swim straight and don't panic
2:30-ish T1 (long run-out to the transition area included...I'm Nathalie-ing the ankles of my wetsuit to speed that up
sub-44 bike, sub-42 reach, hoping race wheels make some difference
1:15 T2 (pre-laced running shoes)
sub-26 run, sub-25 reach

I'm going to predict 1:29:30, I'd be super happy with Nat's time from last week 1:28.  In theory that should get me into the top third of my AG and into Nationals, but as always it's who shows up.

ETA:  Full-on taper madness going on here, bouncing off the walls and my skin hurts.    I also seem to have lost my "crack pipe" (the thingy you control the CO2 cartridges with) so I had better not flat tomorrow.  LOL

Good luck tomorrow Mike, hope you qualify!

One point for 2024 Nat. So that’s 2-1 now.

I am really pleased with my race, went totally according to plan. The total time ended up being much faster than my goal (by 4 minutes) but according to my watch, the course was shorter than advertised, only the run was the 4.2k they said. The swim was 40m shorter and the bike 1km shorter. But I nailed all my tempo goals.

Icing on the cake, I won the women’s race. As we know, it’s all about who shows up or not and the fast ones who won previous years with a time around one hour didn’t turn up, and no other fast ones either so my 1h05 was enough to win.

Icing on the icing, a mate from my running club won the men’s race.

Race report to follow

Great job Nat!! First place women is awesome! (Unqualified—I don’t care who shows up…it is awesome because you did and they didn’t, so that counts!)

Mike—go fast!!! (Since you’re probably actively racing right now!!). Or…I could say my least favorite cheer:You’re almost there!! That is ALWAYS a lie!!

Favorite cheers/signs from previous races? Mine is the woman at MiTi on the run that had a sign that said “one day you won’t be able to do this, but today is not that day!” It really came at a tough moment in the race for me and it has stuck with me. And…of course…smile if you owed in the lake/on your bike/on yourself always makes me laugh.

True, but I’d rather break my goal time and finish last than fail at reaching my goal and win because none of the better ones showed up that day. When you do both, like yesterday, it’s perfect!

Umm, can’t think of one right now but a guy offered me a beer as I ran pass his house yesterday, that was fun.

That happened to me today, too.  I should have taken up the offer the way my run was going.

Mediocre day for me out there - pretty good swim (actually I would say my best ever), meh bike, run went off the rails (again).  I also wasn't looking to fully red line after last month's scare so there was definitely some anxiety that didn't help.  RR tomorrow.  13 minutes from qualifying for nationals and there's no way in hell I left all of that out there so at least no regrets.  I put in a good effort just didn't have it today.

Sorry to hear that, but well done on the swim!

Totally understandable that you were not willing to red line after your little ticker scare!
Good news about not having regrets about the Nationals.

Looking forward to your RR, I’ve just finished a book and have nothing to read at the moment

Hi all!

Nat, congrats on your race! I agree with Gretchen, YOU SHOWED UP! Way to crush it and meet your goals, and less importantly (but more fun), WINNING!

Mike, we all have those days! Crazy to think I was supposed to be out there with you this weekend. Stinks about nationals but good that you felt like you had more in the tank. I know that scare was probably a lot of stress, so taking it easier makes sense.
Great weather for it yesterday! Hopefully you had some cloud cover (though maybe could've been a little cooler).

Gretchen, happy belated birthday! Natural causes sounds right to me for that PM! (I can totally picture you, hammer and screwdriver in hand, smashing it open and being like, oooooops...but of course, that's not what happened!)

Andrew, happy early birthday, to you and Mr. 6!! Wait, so will he be Mr. 6, or Mr. 7?!
Do the best you can with your training! I'm always amazed how much parents of young kids are able to juggle, and you are more impressive than most I know!

Hi all!
Usual busy week last week, but in a balanced way! I'm gearing up for my crazy month of travel (how is it already June?), so doing PT, allergy shots, had to get vaccine details, then go get my Hep A and Typhoid vaccines for my India trip in a few weeks. Had to get my Visa also, which I just received yesterday, so I think I'm mostly ready with the big stuff. Still need to buy some stuff (permethrin to keep the bugs away, some linen/cotton clothes, pepto pills...lol

On top of that I've been walking most days, still doing strength/PT (love my new PT person) and I swam Saturday morning (got in about 2k yds, but my shoulders were KILLING me from the vaccines the day before). Also went standup paddle boarding yesterday with a friend.

I'm going to swim again tonight, then do lots of walking/strength/PT planned.

I go to Charlotte again Thursday, but this time for a whole week. And yes Gretchen, I have switched to boyfriend (mostly out of laziness lol) it's been 3 months now which is pretty wild. He's definitely dealing with some big emotions/grief from his separation, so it's not all easy, but I knew that would probably be the case.

Lots happening, but it's all going in the right direction! I definitely feel my groin pain more now that my hamstring is better, but hoping with all these exercises that starts to feel better soon and I can get back to doing more of my normal activities!

Race report is up:  https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=560007&posts=1#M5288819

I've had better days but still enjoyed it.  And my daughter won her age group, so there's that.

Taking it easy for a couple of days then putting it all into one more race in six weeks.

Big weekend here in BDASr land.

@Nat, great job on your race and the win. I totally get what you mean about racing yourself being the most important thing. I tend to agree with you, and that's where I get satisfaction from for my performances rather than a placing. BUT, an overall win for the ladies? That is something to be celebrated. So well done.

@Gretchen. As a mechanical engineer, if you can't fix the problem with a hammer, it's an electrical fault. You tried a hammer, it didn't work therefore it needed replacing. Sounds like normal wear and tear to me. Your wife should be relieved you only got the new power meter, not a new bike that includes a power meter

@Mike, Glad you enjoyed the race. That's the main thing after all. Hopefully you have a good training block coming up, and can nail that nationals spot next time out. I've said it before, but so cool you can race with the offspring. I'm a few years away, but that's something I am really hoping my kids want to do with me one day. Well done to mini mike on her win. Awesome stuff.

@Nicole, Thanks, I don't feel I do a good enough job of finding training time, but I do my best. I've said before indoor training (zwift/treadmill) has been a game changer. I doubt I would do anything like what I do now without it. Sounds like you're getting plenty active despite your injuries. So keep it up.

Another run focus week done and dusted for me. 3rd week in a row (and 5th out of the last 6) over 50km running. As I said this week was supposed to be a rest week, and next week my peak week. But next week we've got a lot of family stuff going on (yup, in 4 days he'll be Mr 7)

So Sunday I did my last big HM pace workout a week earlier than the book says. 18km, with 13@HM pace. Now, I didn't feel great, to be fair the whole run was a bit of a struggle and I wasn't able to hit the target paces I wanted (about 10s/km slower than planned) I guess taking inspiration from the Dr Gretchen Triathlon training scheduling text book didn't work for me (Spent the afternoon the day before this workout with a shovel and wheelbarrow backfilling the retaining wall which may not have been the ideal prep)

But, on the positive, the wheels didn't totally fall off, although a bit slower than planned, my pace was pretty constant throughout the 13km. And compared to this workout before Aprils race, I was 20s/km faster. So progress has definitely been made over the last couple of months.

For the week:

S/B: 0
Run: x6, 50.1km
S/M: x1, 10 minutes

So now May's been and gone how'd everyone do?

Swim, Nope,
Bike, x3, 2hr 15min all zwift
Run, x28, 27hr 7min, 204.5km
Strength and Mobility, x4, 45min.

About 29 1/2 hours of SBR for the month.

I'm in the peak stages of a Half Marathon plan, so unexpectedly run focused. But I miss my bike, and I think she misses me.

How'd everyone else manage?

Nice run here this morning, with 4x8' in Z4 with 3' RI. Felt good--and, I managed to get my HR and pace zones to match. Plus...I moved two turtles off the road to keep them from getting hit, scared three deer away from the road to keep them from getting hit, and pet two new dogs. That, my friends, is an awesome run!

May totals:
Swim: 17:34:40 - 40625.81 Yd (+13.5% by distance; +18.1% by time over April)
Bike: 28:40:23 - 476.31 Mi (+21.1% distance; +24.0% time)
Run: 14::24:25 - 64.28 Mi (-5.3% distance; -6.3% time)
Strength: 7:40 (+9.3% time)

Grand total of 68:19:28 not too shabby

Edited to add: I just told my wife I spent 68 hours training for triathlon in May and she said "That doesn't seem like that much." My soul died a little bit I think. :D

Ouch.

I don't think I've ever done that much in a month...maybe 50 tops.

My May was uh, a little underwhelming.  LOL
