Ok all...... I need input /help/ideas/you name it, I need it !!!!!

I do not balance well at all in the pool.  I tried the drill where you put one hand out straight and lean your head on it........swim on your side and turn your head up to breathe. My friend watched me and she said "you sink"........ I do not know why, but you sink.  I would turn my head to breathe and be under the water so far I'd take in water in my nose (why I am sick now I think). my legs did not sink , it was my entire torso and head !

I do not know how to correct my balance.  I saw myself on video again from our last class (you can see the horror at www.rubberduckyswimclub.blogspot.com   I swim last in that video......... and I literally hang my head low in an attempt to push my chest down into the water.  I thought I'd made progress and done so much better fixing how I swim, but wow..........not it just looks bad in a different way. LOL

I will ask my friend for her swim coach's name......... but I kinda worry that I am that girl who no matter what someone else tries to show me.....i will not be able to do it.  I could not do any of the drills that my friend did so easily, I was embarrassed at my lack of progress and she was SO patient ! She stayed 1/2 hour after our swim was over and worked with me........i still could not do it.

My balance is horrible !  I blame my huge boobs !!!!!!     so other than a boob reduction ....... I'll take any ideas and seriously, that adult sized rubber ducky floatie.........NOT A BAD IDEA !!!!

I've struggled with sinking for a long time but recently I've made a lot of good progress towards correcting it. One thing was for me to work on core strength through pilates. The other was to "push your T", kinda push out your chest. It's related the balance stuff I wrote about on Sunday: your center of balance is your chest/lungs and if you keep your front side down it will bring your legs up. Two things I noticed in your latest video is that your arms spend almost no time out in front of you. Keeping them out there for more glide and more of your stroke will help to counterbalance your legs; watch what your second swimmer is doing (except don't slice your arms in towards the center like she does). My coach on Sunday talked about "reach and replace". Search YouTube for "catch up drills". The second thing I noticed is that your legs are kicking too wide so that they break out of your slipstream and will slow you down

I was back into the pool today, trying to remember what I was told on Sunday and apply it by myself. The two main things I was working on was slicing my hand into the water and bringing it forward at the proper depth and "reach and replace, the coach's mantra for holding the arm out front longer for each stroke (more of a catch up stroke). I was concentrating so much on this stuff that I was losing my normal breathing pattern and getting tired. When it's all correct, it feels so good! I also spent time doing drills: catch-up, side swimming, and one arm swimming.

I've finished out March as my biggest swimming volume month ever: 22,700m!

My idol !!!!  I am so impressed with you, you hard worker !!! WOOHOo

Thank you. Yes, I'm working hard at this swimming stuff!

I can't wait to get the video of my swim; should have it some time this week.

Agreed. You want to feel like you are "pushing down" with your chest. Your hips are not your center of balance, but your chest. Think of it like a shovel. You don't hold your hand in the middle of the shovel when you're trying to lift it, but way toward the front.

I dunno if that's a good analogy or not, but ...

Also, try doing the drill with fins to start. They will help add buoyancy. Then get rid of the fins over time.

I've watched the video, you are ducking down your head too much and turning your head at the end of your stroke. I try to watch/follow my hand's course to time when breathe:when it's near my head that's when i rotate/lean on my other arm that is fully extended so my mouth has air.hope that helps!

as for the boob thing...wish i could blame mine for my slug times but meh

When I bought my wetsuit last year I was allowed to try several in the pool (all felt very different). I found that I could not go by the sizing chart (I ended up going down a size from what was recommended). Also...swimming in a wetsuit is quite a bit different than without. If you can afford it, I would recommend purchasing one (it will last for years if you take care of it and store it properly) and practice a few times before your HIM.

You guys are a hard group to keep up with.  March was a tough month at work, way too busy (can't even remember ever being this busy in the 17 years I've been at my firm) and lots of layoffs the last couple of weeks.  But it's almost April, spring is here, baseball season (for my son) is in full swing, and all is well, at least for the time being!

I hope that everyone has a great week this week, and that you are starting to have some beautiful spring days for training!

Way to go Yvonne and Helen this weekend!! Whose racing next?

-Lisa

I have two races coming up, but I haven't signed up yet.  Because I'm traveling for work during the week, I'm planning to wait and see how the plane trips go and how tired I am.  But on the schedule is a 5K on the 11th and a sprint tri on the 18th.

The sprint has an OWS and I don't have a wetsuit.  And since I don't own a wetsuit, I'm thinking about renting one online.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  I'll also need a wetsuit (probably) for my HIM in May, so I'd have to rent twice.  I'm beginning to wonder if this makes economic sense, or whether I should buy one.  On the other hand, most of the time here the gulf water is so warm that I wouldn't need a wetsuit.  It's just for these early season races...

soo true...and i find that in ows...it makes you more buoyant! but my first race I never practiced stripping one off quickly and this slowed me down BIG time in T1....I didnt know that there was a trick to getting them off quickly! so I struggled and struggled and finally some nice girl that was next to me just ripped it off! She was in my AG and I cant tell you how many times I thanked her after the race! so make sure you do practice swimming in it and taking it off quickly after!

the trick is to unzip as you are exiting the water and to fill the suit with as much water as possible as you exit the lake/river/ocean...this expands it away from you skin and will help you tremendously when you go to remove it! make sure to not swim in the pool in it unless your pool is saltwater pool.....otherwise you will ruin your suit...and lastly be careful of putting on and taking off..I have a hole in mine from finger nail! was able to repair..but they can tear quite easily if not pulled on properly.

GOOD LUCK! Not sure if your area is like our area....housing has gone down incredibly low! good time to be looking for rentals and homes to buy~ downsizing means less to clean!! and I like that A LOT!

now if I could just get to the garage! when I get back I am going to have to pull everything out and start making piles...donation and keep! I can not believe how FULL it is with CARP!

When it's all correct, it feels so good! I also spent time doing drills: catch-up, side swimming, and one arm swimming.

I've finished out March as my biggest swimming volume month ever: 22,700m!

Wow! You are my hero!

I have read a bit about the one arm swimming- but have yet to see it in action. Might have to do a search on youtube. Is it meant to help even out the stroke?

I think it's meant to reinforce the idea of keeping an arm forward for more of your stroke.

Well seeing as I have no boobs and still have balance troubles- can't blame it on the boobs.

Swimming is not my strength but hopefully I can still offer up a couple of ideas that my coach has provided to me...

1. Increase pool time...when I started spending 3x a week in the pool, that is when improvements started coming. The first time I tried many of the drills, I truly thought I was going to drown...but they seem so much easier now after having spent more time in the pool being comfortable.

2. Relax... I found that much of the time that I was struggling for air was just because I was struggling...as soon as I relaxed and stopped fighting myself and the water, it just became easier.

3. Pressing the T- as Nicole indicated- to avoid swimming uphill which means that your legs and hips are low and therefore creating drag. While head position does play a role, focus on pressing the chest downward.

4. Balance- side kick will come but consider progressing by starting the TI way which is on your back with the water line at the edge of your goggles- relax and kick gently...as you get more comfortable, slowly go from kicking on your back to rolling to one side- you don't have to be right on the side to start- just focus on keeping the body aligned and again relax as you kick on your side. When ready roll more to the side and add the outstretched arm.

5. Recovery- I am still working on this one but finger tip drag drill will help you to keep your elbows high.

6. Glide- Use catch-up drill to help with timing so that you maximize your glide.

Keep at it! It will come.

Offthegrid - 2009-03-31 6:59 PM I'm all moved in and unpacked! I am one happy, happy girl tonight. And had no problem getting into the wireless Internet either. I love it!

Yay Susie! Something wonderful about new beginnings... hope you had sweet dreams!
