First off, thanks so much to all of you who are providing us rookies with valuable information about the race, course, what to expect, etc! I'm sitting here in St. Louis and will have no opportunity to be anywhere near Lake Placid before race weekend! Seeing as though this is my first attempt at the 140.6 distance any and all of the information is so much appreciated. So thank you!!! As for something that I've been having trouble deciding - what bike will serve me best on the course? I have a road bike that's fairly entry level but I've ridden quite a bit and I have a tri-bike that's a little nicer, race wheels, etc. I'm having a tough time figuring out what will be the better set-up as I really can figure out what this course is. Climbing is certainly easier in my road bike and it's a more comfortable ride overall - but I feel somewhat silly riding my "lesser" bike in what should amount to the biggest race (albeit I've only done a few tris) of my life?! Does anyone have any advice here? Will it be an overwhelming majority of tri-bikes on the course or is there a good mix of both? Has anyone ridden the course in their road and tri-bike and have any feedback or learn anything? Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks again for letting me read through all of your thoughts about Lake Placid - sounds like an incredible setting and I can't wait to be a part of it all!
TRI-BIKE and just change your gearing to a 11-27 or 28 and you will be fine. There are no TDF climbs but they are long and not that steep. I have ridden both types of bike and i am using my Tri-Bike X2. Aero trumps all. Tri bike without a doubt. I went up to LP for a training weekend a few weeks ago w/ my roadie and clip on bars. Loved it and was comfortable for sure. Everyone I speak to says go Tri bike so I am doing the rest of my rides on my tri bike and will probably ride that one come race day ~ with 11/28. That was just fine for the hills up there. Long, yes. Steep, no. What's nice about the hills is they don't pitch up - it's more of a steady climb with no steep pitches. And I second the notion the climb to the Keene decent is a beyotch and a half. Luckily we're done with both rounds by mile 65 or so. |

At 4.5 weeks from LP, I may be completely out for the race. At this point my plan is to just substitute all my runs for aquajogging and see how it heals up when I visit the doctor again in 4 weeks. If there's anyway I can do LP without risking cracking it completely, then I'm in. So hopefully I'll see you all there! ]Uggh - sorry to hear that! Heal up fast and hope for the best. |

Member 75 Huntley, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Question about the changing tents for transitions. Do you have to wait in line for a room/spot? Or is it an open changing area (one for men, one for women)? How much time will this add to transition? I am planning on doing the whole race in my tri shorts, but in case I need to change, I want to know how it's set up. |

I was entirely comfortable for the hour I was in the water. Some in the group wore their w.suit and were saying they were not overheating. All I can say it's more than 70 at this point. t |

There is still 4 weeks to go so my bet is that the temp will go up and down about 300 times till then. Are we playing squares on this one? |

I am planning on doing the whole race in my tri shorts, but in case I need to change, I want to know how it's set up. I believe it's a free for all but someone correct me if I am wrong. People,,... just promise me no one in here will be one of the 30-40 min total transition times!!!!! lol. I could not believe it when I saw it on the results. I have never tapered for an Ironman as this is my first but for marathons I have, and your mind will make you develope new "injuries" before the race that will go away for the actual event. I have tapered and started to get shin splints, stress fracture type symptoms and my coaches from college who train olympic marathoners have seen much worse so it is probably all in your head but what everyone else said is a good way to just waken your legs up again. keep your mind off of it and you should be fine! |

Have to chime in...do not keep running on "shin splint, stress fracture type symptoms"! Tired, heavy legs is one thing, but sore, achy shins is completely different and shouldn't be taken lightly (coming from someone who just learned this the hard way...). |
