I've further indoctrinated myself into the ranks of becoming a 'real' swimmer, according to my wife. Inhaled tons of water, check. Bruised forearm from the lane divider, check. Split a finger open doing backstroke and striking the pool filter drain, check. Them tonight I crashed forehead first into the wall. No, I have zero idea how I managed this while doing crawl, you'd think a hand would hit first. Icing my head now.

You're getting there. Wait until you overshoot your flip turn and hit your heels. By far the worst injury sustained during my swimming career.

I am also doing a sprint the following weekend. I am thinking of going all out for the sprint and just see how low I can get my time, or hit the wall and have a terrible time. I did the same race last year so I can compare the 2. Lets not slow down we are hitting the busy season.

Dave I will partner up with you for weight loss to keep you honest, but I don't want to lose much if any.

Its official I am signed up for my Ironman. I made the hotel reservations months ago but was waiting on the race to see how training went. I paid which means this is going to happen. Not till October but still its going to happen. Any of you Iron finishers have advice my ears are wide open.

Juan will you still be in the states then? Still 400 spots for the half open, or just as a spectator. Triathlon magazine rated Beach to Battleship in the top 5 races in the US. https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=17&v=feZdgZcb_4w (misery loves company)

My daughter did her first training session for her tri today. She was excited to put her kit on and wants to get a bucket to keep her race numbers on like her daddy has. I am so proud of her. I'm trying not to push her but to let her make the decision to do it, while telling her how proud I am (which I know if very important to her).

Scott - Congrats on signing up for your first Ironman. It will be one of the best days of your life.

So - how do you want to handle a bet for the month. Maybe we could do a coors light bet - fail to make your goal and you drink a warm 40. Thoughts?

Just realized I forgot to post my workouts from yesterday...

Workout 8 and 9

Woke up really sore, was debating on whether to move my rest day up or not, decided to finally just suck it up and get back to it. Back and Bicep day, thank god there was no dead lifts, I'm still feeling the stiff leg dead lifts from Thursday.

After lifting I changed shoes and jumped on the treadmill for a tempo run. Didn't think my legs were going to make it at first, but I eased into it, started slow holding a 9:30 pace, stepped the pace up until the final interval was at sub 7:00.

Today is a rest day, so I decided to not set my alarm and just catch up on sleep. Back on the grind in the morning.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I have my first triathlon of the year coming up later this month, a short and fun sprint. A couple of my co-workers will be doing their first triathlon, hopefully they get bit by the bug!

As for beers, a friend of mine recently started working at a winery just a few miles from Russian River Brewing Co. and brought back some fresh Pliny the Elder. When we shared a bottle it was a wee 11 days old, hops bright and fresh.

Pliny - you lucky bastard. Anyway we could work out a trade during the summer?

I've managed to over due it. Somehow - while aqua jogging no less - I've strained my right glute something fierce. How the hell does one do that? Took a rest day on Friday and cut my ride shot from 40 to 15 today. Hoping it heals up quick.

Just want to point out what I have known since January - we are the best damn group on BT. Last week we moved from 2nd to 1st for the number of posts. Definately something to be proud of. We should all celebrate with a tasty beverage tonight. Right now - I'm drinking some tasty homebrew - a dark IPA made with Simcoe and Equinox and liberty hops. The liberty hops give it a nice spiciness!

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

I do have a couple... When I was training for IMMT - I did a gu at the top of the hour, then 20 minutes later, I had an energy bar, and then 20 minutes later I had 5 saltine crackers for the salt and the calories.

Other things I've tried.... peanuts or almonds (sometimes I have GORP - M and M's, peanuts and raisins), Ritz crackers, For long work outs, I'm a big fan of snickers bars.

Hope this helps!

Absolutely brilliant! And I totally feel like this. Not sure which was better - taking it home to New Jersey to post pictures on facebook, or Magic Hat - HAHA!

Devon - thanks for the link on the goggles. Keeping my head lower is one of my constant focuses. And hip rotation, and not lifting my head so far out for a breath, and breathing in less... The whole swimming thing is so much work! lol.

Lol.

Try something next to you swim. Forget about all your swimming issues.. And just relax. Become completely relaxed and comfortable in the water. When you can become as comfortable in the water as in the most relaxed atmospheres you can imagine, you will be amazed at how at peace and confident you will be while swimming. Being a good swimmer is learning not to fight with the water, but rather move with it.

Race Report In case you don't remember my master plan, here it is. My goal tri is in August. I signed up for my local YMCA triathlon as a way for me to guage my progress. I also needed a way for me to determine whether I should sign up for the Sprint or the Oly in August. If I had trouble doing today's "practice" tri then I would go Sprint in August.

Today's sprint was through my YMCA. 500Yards in the pool; 12.4 mile bike; 3.1 mile run.

The weather was perfect. This tri is called the "Average Joe/Joan" and is exactly that. This is an entry to the entry level races. They normally have around 40 people in the race, but due to other competition from races on the same weekend, there were only 22 today. As I said it's a small intro to triathlon race.

Swim
It was started in waves with 2 people per lane. I started nice and smooth instead of blasting out of the gate like my lane partner. I passed him 3 laps later. I've been doing 2 minute 100's in practice, but today I had a little bit of adrenaline.
I popped out of the pool at 9:10

T1 + Bike
They didn't calculate transition times, they just baked it into the next section of the race. I didn't do anything too crazy here. I did bike and run with socks. I had them rolled up sitting in my bike shoes. Even though I don't have clip pedals, I decided against wearing the Hoka's on the bike ride since they would absorb some of my stroke. I went with a pair that gave me a better feel for the bike. I drove the bike course Saturday, so I knew what I was doing, that helped. It also helped me to be prepared for just how many potholes I was going to see. It was quite a few. The roads don't close down for a 22 person triathlon, so I was sharing the road with cars. I've explained that i don't feel comfortable riding on the small roads around me during practice, but when it's race day that all goes away. On a personal note, I'm just glad that My Fitness Pal classified my ride as "vigorous" instead of my normal "moderate".
I rolled up to T2 at: 1:00:48 That's a 51:38 ride with T1 included.

T2 + Run
I just changed shoes here and dropped off anything I had in the back pocket of my BDAS jersey. Anything bouncing around back there would have annoyed me. I made sure to do the newbie mistake of taking off to run with my helmet on, even though I read MULTIPLE times to not do that. I suspect that it's one of those "everyone does it once" things. I lost maybe 10 seconds. The run wasn't posted yesterday, so I couldn't drive it. I had to rely on my ability to follow the markings on the ground. For the most part they were good. I had some concerns during the run that I went the wrong way, but I trusted my ability to follow markings and kept plugging away. Luckily I was right.
I ran across the finish line with a: 1:30:47. That's a 29:59 5K with T2 included.

Overall feeling
I passed a few folks, and everyone was really encouraging (I tried to be as well). This had a different feel than my organized runs. This felt a little bit more like a close knit community (I don't know if that's YMCA people or triathlon people). There were a few people there that have already run my target Tri, so I was able to pick people's brains. With everyone's help in here, I can say that I have trained properly to do this race. I have no after effects and I expect none.

Soooo...
1. I'm now officially a triathlete
2. I'm happy with my performance; Everything felt good.
3. This race was to determine whether I do a Sprint or Oly in August. I plan on signing up for the Oly tonight.

Thanks again for keeping me honest everyone. I don't have any pics, but I DID wear the BDAS jersey. Once the YMCA posts their pictures I'll find the one where I look the most handsome and post it in here.

Well I think I just scored a really good deal on the classified section..

Just got a 910xt with charger and HRM for $75...

Apparently it got buggy for the guy a few times, nothing too serious, just an episode of lost data and a momentary freeze, but apparently he was ready to move up to the 920xt. I'm sure a factory restore will sort any issues it has out..

Been wanting to train with one for a while, so this will at least get me started.

Had my hour spin class this morning, and my mom came by for dinner to bring my birthday cake. Had a big dinner, a Founder's Breakfast Stout, (delicious!), 2 pieces of birthday cake....and then my wife looked at the workout calendar and said 'you were supposed to run today too'. Mind you, the thunderstorms were in with flash flood warnings accompanied by a 30 degree temperature drop. And I'm full of food. A year ago there is no way this workout was happening - thanks to this fine crew at BDAS I knew I had to get that workout in! 400m intervals no less... But I did it, I finished strong, and came home cold, soaked, and filthy; but feeling very accomplished.

So I just wanted to say 'thanks' to all of you for keeping me motivated.

Ugh, my stomach hurts just thinking about this. I *might* be able to do a slow easy bike ride... but 400m intervals on a run? You are bada$$!

I'm late to the party but maybe my opinions will help:

- When you get your bike unracked at T1, does everyone run with it to the mount point? I haven't ever done that, I think I'll smack the back of my calf with the pedal multiple times.
Yes... studs like Devon can do a flying mount, but I have no interest in learning it. I've never had a problem with the pedal hitting me when I run with my bike. It's worth practicing running with the bike (on the side without the chain) and mounting.
- Does everyone use a clip belt with your race bib.
Not everyone does... but I do and they're super cheap and super useful. Saves time, plus I wouldn't want to pin a hole in my trisuit.
- Is there a trick to racking the bike? I thought this would be bullet proof and haven't thought about it.
All the ones I've encountered are different, but none are hard to figure out. I think for Devon it was an issue of wasting seconds, which isn't an issue for me.
- For my Oly I'm not planning on bringing spare tubes or CO2. I was thinking that if the bike goes then I'm just going to go with it, but I could see the value in carrying a fast sealer/inflator like Slime in the back of my jersey. What do you folks do?
I always have a frame pump and spare tube. I know there was recently a thread about this... but basically, even if you're out of the running to win the race, you save yourself a long unpleasant walk back to T2. And if you're like me, there's a certain sense of accomplishment to finishing a race, esp an Oly.. I would not want a flat to rob me of that..
Even back when I was a more serious triathlete, and getting top 10% overall, I carried a seat bag and a frame pump.

Juan, Devon and Snweo- way to kill it on all your races! Very impressed,
And Jenn I think you're a beast. Seriously whenever you post I'm like "wow, she does so much, and so fast." I've never done a HIM but I feel like with biking, I can pretty much double my longest training ride on any given day and not hurt too bad (like I do a very hilly metric century every year, but seldom ride more than 20 miles in training, and probably never more than 30). Point is...you can do it, and you'll do great!

Now for me time: rented a house with a bunch of friends in the Finger Lakes last week. First 4 days were beautiful, and I did lots of kayaking and a couple of swims in the lake- considering I haven't swum since last summer, they weren't too bad. But on the 5th day it hurt to lift my arms, LOL. I hope it was from the kayaking and not the swimming. Planning to do a sprint (with a longer run) in my hometown at the end of the month, and I definitely need to get to the pool. City pools open this weekend so it will be easier.
I would like to do the head-to-head weight loss challenge if anyone else is into it.
And how bout them Pirates?

Perfect! A Switchback on your birthday is about the best thing ever! Did you have the regular Switchback Ale or their summer Switchback Citra Pils? That one is a nice, sort of lighter beer with just a hint of citrus - a good hot summer day beer.
