Aloha all!

Sorry I haven't been around much but travel and workouts at the Hawaii camp have chewed up all my time.  Plus we don't have a very good internet connection in the condo.  We just got back from a 17 mile time trial out on the Queen K.  We couldn't have asked for better weather!

So what does everyone have on tap for the week?  Our general everyday schedule is: swim for an hour or 2 in the morning, ride 3-7 hours in the afternoon, run 1-2 hours in the afternoon, a few more hours of lectures at night.  Camp rules!

Tr1Hawaii - 2009-01-26 8:34 AM
JF Aaron - Here's question:  When out with an injury/illness, where should one pick up in their training plan.  As if it never happened or where you left off?  I had a good base of fitness when I started....

You can probably just pick up where you should be.  Don't try to do something like "make-up" for the workouts you missed.  If you missed it then it's gone.  But as long as you can handle what your training plan has right now then jump back in.

Glad you are enjoying the camp, looks like you guys took the nice winter weather with you.  Tomorrow morning is that wonderful freezing rain we all love here.

This week I am going to focus on swimming and getting the knee feeling better, hope to be on the bike towards by the end of the weekend, hopefully just in time for that 70/80 degree winter weather you will bring back with you.

Morning everyone

How is everyone today? What is everyone up to for this week? Have you guys started yet your plan for this summer's races?

I just came back from my morning run, I still have hope that the weather will warm eventually ...

Good morning All!!

Today is a good day.  Ice storm is over, sun is out, warming and I have to ride on the trainer again!!  Oh well...

My schedule keeps changing.  I've got my 'A' race at the end of summer but my job with the Dept of the Army keeps changing all the others.

We had snow, then rain, and now ice for today. Good luck with orders and keeping on your plan.

Between now and the end of Saturday, I need to run 6.2 miles, bike 60 miles, and swim 7,400 yards in order to meet my January goals.  Running shouldn' t be a problem, but biking and swimming is going to take some effort.

Good luck to everyone meeting their January goals.

I share your pain about riding on the trainer. Although I do like the chance to just do drills and focus on my heart rate.

I dont mind the trainer, I log a lot of miles on mine. 90% of my riding for 2008 and 100% for 2009 so far. Its easy to do drills, real hard workouts, and long steady efforts.  Its 20s and windy off and on here.

Talk to me about nutrition.

I have this tub of Hammer "Sustained Energy Ultra Endurance Fuel" in the closet, which I've used on a few long runs and bike rides. But I've never just relied on something like that as my only nutrition for an event, and instead work in gels, water, gatorade, etc.

My stomach doesn't handle PB&J sandwiches during a workout, and in fact, I prefer not to ingest anything solid/heavy during an event.

So what do you use when you're out there for a few hours at a time?

Good topic, would like to know some intake information too since this year will be my first distance where I need to consider this.  For me, I have never had issues taking in solid or gels at all.

Morning everyone

Aaron, I am thinking about trying my first marathon this summer and I was wondering. How long should I plan after the mary before I can restart running on a regular basis? I have around 4 weeks between that planned mary and my next tri.

Do you think this is enough?

So what's everyone's plan for the week?

I put in a good 30 hours during camp last week so I've got a recovery week through at least Friday.  Not sure about the weekend yet because my coach was hit by a truck while we were in Hawaii (shattered collar bone, 6 broken ribs, punctured lung), but he should be back to work in a few days.

How about y'all?

I've got 25 miles of running, 60 miles of biking, 4 miles of swimming, and 3 hours of yoga on tap this week.  My biggest goal this week though is getting a solid nutrition plan in place.  I'm looking for a nutritionist but can't locate one around me that specializes in endurance athletes.  I want to find someone that will tell me exactly what to eat, and when to eat it.

Aaron - how's your coach?

Aaron - how's your coach?

His collar bone is broken in 4 or 5 places so it'll require a metal plate.  The hole in his lung is getting better but if it doesn't heal quick enough they'll have to put in a chest tube.  That means no flying for at least another 1 or 2 weeks.  In that case they'll have to do the plate there and the hospital in Kona is absolutely horrible, so we're really hoping he can fly back to Texas and let his doctor do the surgery.

Thankfully he as a very high pain threshold.

That's horrible - I'll keep him in my prayers.

Hope your coach's condition improves.

Long "hill" repeats tonight, hard to find a real hill here in florida.  Swim will probably be cancelled in the am due to temps, run in the evening, then travel and hopefully get some runs and swims in along the way.

Who has Friel's "Training Bible" and would you recommend it?

I've never just sat down and really thought about triathlon before, and I'm contemplating spending the $25 for his book.

I got the previous edition as a gift. Honestly if you read the forums here and read other information is freely available and easily accessible on the internet you wont get anything out of it.

Any advice on how to get faster on a bike without changing the equipment??

Turns out I am extremely slow. Equipment is something that I will take for a given, because this will be my first tri season and I am not planning on spending money on another bike before I don't know, if I am going to stick with this.

I do spinning classes twice a week right now with a lot of drills. On the weekend I normally do one outside ride on my own, because honestly, I am too slow to join any of the group rides that I know around here.... Although the area that I am riding is very hilly, under 14miles/hours is way too slow... HELP!
