60 miles on a bike is a lot farther then it sounds on paper.  I am going to go get a padded doughnut to sit on and have some sushi!!!  I know it's uncool but it is very tempting to get one of those nice cushy padded gel seats they put on mountain bikes.  My butt gives out gives out before my legs do. HTFU!

Happy Friday all.

Sushi makes everything better ...

Happy 4th IMFL peeps!

If you're having saddle problems make some adjustments to your saddle and or  bike position. Where does it hurt? Is it your butt or privates that hurt? Sorry for being so direct!

Personally, I would not recommend a gel saddle. The gel will shift around over time. You will get saddle sores in new places. Actually the smaller the saddle with less padding will be easier long term. IMO. But I'm from a cycling background. Look at the saddles that they guys in the Tour are using. They don't have any padding on them. If you have the right saddle and fit more than likely you won't need a large saddle or a lot of padding.

It just takes time to get used to riding for long distances. A good bike fit, saddle, good shorts, chamois butter and time should solve your problems.

You've got plenty of time to find that perfect fit and saddle.

The saddle is definitely small with no padding!  I can't remember exactly what type the seat is.  I am borrowing my brothers bike.  I didn't have one since I am a runner and I also didn't have a few thousand dollars sitting around to buy one.

The seat is a pain in the butt literally.  No rubbing problems, no crotch problems, just a sore backside.  I don't think it is a bad seat or anything.  My guess is that having a sore butt for a few days after a 60 mile bike is fairly normal for a bike newbie.  In addition, I am not nearly as light as some of you guys.  My weight bounces between 190 and 200 and I am 5'10.  I have a shorter stocky build.  I know that is not exactly the ideal body for a triathlete but I don't really have the body to run and I do it anyways.  Endurance sports is the only thing that keeps me from my previous weight of 250!  I have no desire to return to that.

Have you taken the bike to a shop to have them fit YOU to the bike?  If not, definitely do it now before you get deeper into IM training.  For somewhere between $75-$150 you should be able to get them to fit you to the bike.  This will maximize your power and comfort on it and will be worth money, not to mention help prevent injury and other issues.

Ok, I am pretty sure that I can be clinically diagnosed bipolar all due to a little thing known as Ironman.  Anybody else?

I have a love-hate relationship with this thing that swings back and forth all day long.  One week I will be humming along having the best training of my life and the next week I will miss a workout (or two) and it will take everything in me just to get off the couch.  Some days I am ready to quit and others I am ready to double the distance.  One morning I will wake up with no motivation then I will hear just the right song on the way to work and want to stop the car and run the rest of the way.  Ahhhhhh!!

I believe my downfall is with my race schedule.  With this being my first Ironman I didn't know what to expect so I cleared the calendar of all other races to focus on making the Ironman a success.  Bad idea!  I am finding it quite difficult to train for over six months with no interim goals. I really should have included some shorter races so I had something to look forward to.  Instead I just keep looking at the mountain approaching in November and it looks taller and taller the closer I get.  I guess that is a lesson learned for next time.

this is a easy week for me since I'm tapering for my 1/2 Ironman this Saturday.  I think you need to schedule other events before the Ironman.  I haven't really even thought too much about Florida yet, I've been focusing on my up coming event.   I try to set little goals along the way, kind of like making it from aid station to aid station in an Ironman.  I will start my Ironman training on July 27th.

Swam PM on monday with my club. We've got several coaches that help us with technique. Ran 6 Tuesday AM then hit the pool for a quickie. I don't have a lot of long stuff this week because i'm racing the Chattanooga Waterfront Oly. Should be a good time. Good luck to all who are racing!

Whoo Hoo!!  I found a solution to my overheating problem.  As some of you are aware I have been having a difficult time running this summer.  I am usually a solid 9 min/mile guy over long distances. However, I usually only run outside in the fall and winter because I hate the heat.  So my running this summer has looked like 9 min/miles for the first two miles melting down into 12-13 min/miles thereafter.  After trying everything I could think of I came upon the solution - run/walk!

Now usually (due to pride or ego) I am one of the "run the whole 26.2" kind of people.  Actually it's probably because I am a slow runner who feels they have something to prove.  Although this strategy works when it's cold out it just doesn't cut it in the summer for me.  So today I first experimented with a 9/1 ratio but I was still overheating.  I wanted to make the system as easy as possible to remember so I backed it all the way down to a 4/1 so that I would walk on the 0's and 5's.  That was the ticket.  After ten miles I looked at the Garmin and I had consistently average 10 min/miles.. It may not be as fast as I can run in the fall but I'll take it.  Plus it is great pyschologically to know you have a break coming in 4 min.

Still hoping for cool weather in November but at least I now have a tool in case it's not.

Good luck in Chattanooga JMeeks!

jjcnbg - 2009-07-07 11:37 AM Whoo Hoo!!  I found a solution to my overheating problem.

I had a hard time doing this too, because my only run experience is the 5 and 10ks I did as a teen. taking up running again 20+ years later, it took a while to get my brain to start realizing how old my body really is.

My problem isn't overheating.. it's knee pain and mechanical imbalances. I started working with what I jokingly refer to as the "721 Training System", where 721 is 7 to 1. I use this as a run/walk ratio. I walk every 8th quarter mile. This more or less coincides with every other water stop during an event, assuming regular one mile intervals. I set my garmin to beep every quarter mile. If needed I also stop and stretch a bit before starting back into the run.

Since I've started doing 721, I've been much more successful at completing longer distances. What I'm finding is that it really doesn't cost me much time. It allows my run splits to be faster so the walking time ends up balancing out.

Hope it continues to work for you!

FWIW, IM isn't like HIM where you are running in the heat of the day.  Unless you plan on being one of the lead people off the bike, it's generally cooling off quick as you are running.  I'm a slower biker so I didn't get to the run part of IMAZ until 4pm.  I only had one loop during the day before the sun set and I ran the rest in the dark.

So, rejoice...it's probably going to be cooler than you think!

Anyone know the typical weather is like on race day at around 3-9 PM or what it was like during the race last year ?  Just want to know if it's significantly cooler in the early afternoon/evening than it is during the day or if the weather temp is pretty much constant until late at night.  Also, are the winds heavier during the day or night ?  I'm just trying to get a mental picture of what it's like for me during the run.

I've been there the last 3 years and It's been mid to high 70's during the day and dropped in the   60's at night.  I remember finishing in a sleeveless suit and I was not cold, but I was starting to notice the temps getting cooler.  If you think you will be out past the 9pm hour I would put some arm warmer or a light coat in my special needs bag on the run turn around.

17 weeks!

Had my first 80 mile bike ride ever yesterday.  It went pretty well.  I finished it in 4:45 which isn't super fast but gets me across the finish well before the cut-off.  This ride actually went much better then my 60 miler last week.  I really focused in on my nutrition and fluid intake.  I can see why people harp on getting your calories in while on the bike.  Anyways, I hope everyone has a great Saturday.  Good luck on your long runs, long bikes or whatever the day has in store.  I am off to work.

Boryloco,

Are you a local in Panama City Beach?  If so do you know if they are doing any repair to the bad section of the bike course near the end?

Just finished a .9 mile swim.  My right calf cramped up really bad so I had to cut the swim a little short.  I had plenty of sodium and potassium so I am not sure what was going on.  Oh well, hope everyone is having a great Sunday!
