mr2tony - 2009-02-09 9:46 AM My whole family is made up of twins and triplets: Kirk, Kevin and Karen. Adam and Andy. Tim and Tom. Colleen and Cathleen. A few others I can't remember.

Wifey is a twin.  So she has a chance to have them as well - so I've heard.

mr2tony - 2009-02-09 11:41 AM I don't think I'd be a bad father. In fact I think I'd be a great father. But I don't WANT to be a father, just like I don't WANT to be married, hence the divorce proceedings. Which, by the way, are scheduled for a week from today.

WANT and NEED are two different things.  Not sure if there is a subtle hint in there for the other.

Anyhoo, sorry to hear 'bout the D-I-V-O-R-C-E.

Stupid Fair Housing laws...we need a roommate

Hi TAN.

explanation?

My roommie and I have posted ads all on the online bulletin boards of all the major churches around here. So far, we've had almost no luck - it's such a weird time for people to be moving. But I can't post an ad on Craigslist that specifies that we want Christian-only roommates, for fear of it being flagged and being fined up to $10,000 because specifying religious preference is against Fair Housing laws. We are allowed to specify "females only" because there are laws protecting people who share common spaces, that allow you to specify a gender. But even mentioning 'we're both active at church' could be considered "discriminatory" as it hints at the fact that we might want someone who also goes to church. And it's way too much effort to weed through all the secular folk and ask them "do you consider Jesus Christ your personal savior?" - ya know, a little awkward There are Christian roommate finders out there, but none seem heavily trafficked, and a couple of the links didn't even open.

Arg.

ATXtri - 2009-02-09 12:22 PM Question for you guys and gals... if you met someone you might be interested in and then found out they had a kid, is that a deal-breaker?

Probably.  I don't really want kids.  Might change, but so far it hasn't.

did you try getting it printed in the actual church bulletins?  in my experience, church websites aren't well-trafficked in general.

Can you put in the add that two church going christians are looking for a roomate?  You are discribing yourself, but eluding to the fact that you would want similar?

Yup, having it posted in my church's bulletin. The one mega-church around here has a message board that is actually very well-trafficked, and I've obviously posted there. But it's just such a weird time to be trying to find a roommate, that we need a lot of different avenues to explore.

No - according to the Fair Housing laws, that's still a violation, to "identify yourself" as one of the discriminate categories. I think it's one thing to say "young professionals", which could be twisted to be "discrimination" against families or people without jobs, etc, but the religion button is a hot one...so that would get flagged. I don't even think we can say "active in our church".

We want other Christians because of certain shared values that are important to us - ie, no boys spending the night. For various theological reasons, we don't want these things violated! I understand why Fair Housing laws exist, but it's still annoying, since this is a free country. But apparently, housing posts are considered "commercial speech" and not personal, so freedom-of-speech does not apply.
