Having done this race the last 2 years (2008, 6:16, 2009, 5:57)
You get a nippie headwind the last 10-15 miles heading back into T2.
Take the speed @ the beginning and out on Avalon when the wind is generally at your back as you will give back some time in the last 15miles.
The wind isnt that bad, just enought to drop your speed 1-2mph and jack up the HR 10-15bpm.
You have no choice but to back off and save the legs for the African Grassland Run!!!

this is why I have a power meter!!! I use that and take the speed where I can and hunker down and just watch my watts when hit with headwind....

Biked 63 miles this morning on most of the miles on the Disney 70.3 course and then did a 3.5 mile brick.  I avg a little less than 18 MPH and the run was terrible.  I was out of gas.  I put in 14 hours this week and was really tired on the ride and the run.  I felt like I got a lot accomplished this week.  Going to make sure I make good use of my time the rest of March and April.

well in my swim today, 1000 of the 3200 I was able to kick so knee is coming along (I did the workout as planned so the rest was meant to be pull sets).

going to try an easy spin on the trainer tonight to see if knee can handle - and if so might try aqua jogging tomorrow....

Ran 4mi this morning, then hour and ten min on the bike.  6mi run planned for tomorrow and maybe a swim.  I'm behind the power curve, but I think I'll make it through the race.  I have a 6200ft altitude advantage Cool

50mi ride today with long flats into 12-15mph head winds...  Thought it would be good training for FL.  Also all the courses I ride here in Southern IN have hills so I hope that helps me in 8-weeks.  Still working on getting some solid run miles in.

Well, a small accomplishment for me yesterday.  I have never run a road race.  Ok, till yesterday.  I have never even run a 5k but yesterday, I did the ING half marathon in Atlatna.  Great run for me.  I have not been running long as I was a 300 pounder last year.  I completed the half marathon yesterday in 2:12.  I ran the first 6 miles at a 11 min mile, which is typically my pace, then one ten min mile and the last 6 at 9:00 each..   Great run for me and did a bunch for my confidense.

Back out in the pool this morning.  No time to waste.

Thanks for setting up the swim in Orlando guys.  It will be very helpful for me.

I have had a ton of people tell me I am and was crazy for running my first half marathon 2H09m:10sec and then going to swim 1200m and the funny thing is they all know I am training for a this race. How do explain to your friends you really have to prepair for a 6 hour race.

i got the same reaction. i love their reaction when you say i have a 2 hour bike and a 1 hour run planned for this afternoon. it's fun to watch them shake their heads. that's when i say "i'm doing it just cause i can."

The part that cracks me up is they think the 3000 yard swims are more impressive than the long bike rides and runs...huh?  I just kind of say yeah that is a long time in the pool as I secretly cannot wait for swim days

My hubby and I are in for this race this year.

I haven't read the entire thread yet, just went back a few pages, but I did read most of the race reports for the past few IMFL 70.3 races. I also live (and hence, train & race) in south FL. OK, gotta say the following (just a bit of caution for those racing either their first half OR for those coming down from up North):

There were a few comments in this thread about the fast bike splits. Now, I can't say whether or not the course was short, but what I can say is that I have learned that when folks come on down here to flat-ville, they want to ride FAST! Often, faster than they should in a climate like this. If you look at many of those race reports from last year, you will notice fast bike splits and then... death on the run. The heat down here is an equalizer beyond all equalizers.

For those of you coming from up North, all I'm saying is... respect the heat & humidity that we have here in May.

Good luck to all!!!

It may be way too early to be asking, but does anyone living in the Orlando area have a feeling on what the water temp will likely be come race time?  It's been a cold winter here in Georgia, and it SNOWED when we visited Disney in January.  Any chance we'll be using wetsuits?

As soo as the weather in NC starts keeping up in the high 70 degrees I am going to start running and biking during my lunch break  during the hottest part of the day so I can get use to it,

Agree 100%! It's amazing how quickly the water temps warm up down here once we get a steady stream of 80 degree days (like we've been getting this week). Even the Gulf warms up quickly.

All is good here.  Ive been on a pretty good play now for 8 or so weeks and have not missed a beat.  I may not be ready but it wont be for lack of effort...  I had my first mile swim this week without stopping.  I did it in 32:15.  I have been very worried about the swim since I started as I am not a great distance swimmer.  But it looks like I will be OK with 7 weeks left if nothing changes.  I am doing a good many brick workouts everyweek.  I have had no problems transitioning from bike to run.  Most of my long bike rides have been from 25-35 miles up to this point.  On Thursday, I will do a 45 mile ride.  I live where there are hills.  Lots and lots of big steep hills.  Not much flat ground so it is hard to really measure how my bike is.  I am averaging 17 mph on these hill rides when I push.  I truly believe I can get atleast 18 mph on the flat ground by May.  My goal for the ride is under 3 hours.  That could be a stretch but It is my goal.

Ahhh...the temperature is slowly rising here in Michigan.  I ran 13.1 on Friday outside, it was cool but sunny.  I am planning a long bike ride tomorrow.  If the AccuWeather.com chart is indeed accurate the temps should be above 40F (my personal minimum for outside workouts) by 10:30 am so that should give me enough time to ride 60 miles of circles up and down Lakeshore, get home, eat, shower, eat more, and pick up the kids then spend the rest of the night telling them to stop asking me to do stuff that involves moving because MOMMY IS TIRED SHE JUST BIKED 60 MILES!!!

Has anyone else notice that your kids are not nearly as impressed by your distance workouts as your friends are?

Great job at sticking to your plan Ryan.  Sounds like you are doing all the right things in preparing for HIM.  I just did my first triathlon this weekend. It was a sprint distance and what a rush it was.  It feels like time is flying towards FLA 70.3 race, I have an international distance next month as my next checkpoint.  Good luck and keep it up!

-LanierSpots-  Right there with you.  This is my first HIM and I'm working through a progressive program that it keeping me on pace by building distance, yet keeping me injury free..!!!  Us 43+'ers kind of need to look out for good recovery and smart training.  Weather is Southern Indiana has improved and long run and rides are increasing.  I'm up to 2500m freestyle, 50 mi bike, and will run a half marathon the Sunday after Easter.  I will say that although I'm not a program follow'er for P90-X, I do use some of the DVDs in my training.  The Core Syn. and Yoga have actually helped me.  I'm going to be using some products from Hammer Nutrition during my ride and run.  I'll also use Cytomax in my hydration.  Wish I'll have more time getting ready for 80 to 90 degree heat, but I'm just going to have to watch intake and pace.  See you all very soon
