Well I just got back from the Dr. and got great news.  He said there was a little flare up of tendonitis, but really did not see anything damaged to where surgery or anything is needed.  Basically he said I just was over training a little and was going too hard too fast.  So he said just back off a little and take it a little easy at first.  Maybe stretch a little better than I have been.  SO IM BACK!!!!!!

I still think I might take it easy the next week and a half and start fresh Jan. 1st.

No surgery is good news, but tendonitis can be a long recovery. Have you talked about PT?

That's great news! Congrats for no surgery/stress fracture. I was the same for a long time, but I started using that couch - 5k running program and its really helped! But that is...if you've been out of running for awhile.

That's great news!  Glad there isn't any terribly injury - it's tough to slow down and back off though...

That always my problem when I train.  I cant go out and take it easy.  I always have to give it 100% and push myself.  I need to learn to slow down a little.
I'm in the same boat.  I tend to be an all or nothing sort of person.

Artemis - 2009-12-21 9:56 PM Hi everyone!  I made it to Wisconsin safely late last night...it was a very long day of travel!!  Today was a few more hours in the car traveling from my parents' house to my in laws' house where we'll be until Christmas.  The net connection isn't great here, but I will do my best to catch up and keep up with the threads.

I did have some pretty good eating days.  I'm counting a grilled chicken sandwich (no mayo) and yogurt from McDonald's as healthy though because it was the best I could do on the road.  There are so few healthy options available when you are traveling!  It is quite frustrating.

Glad you made it safe Jen!  It looks like there is going to be lots of bad weather over the next few days.  I am very thankful we don't have any travel plans for a few days.

Yeah!!!  That's great news!!!

Taking some extra time off to let it heal is probably a good plan.  I'm going to second the PT recommendation.  So glad to hear that it's not more serious!

Thanks!  I am glad we are mostly done with our traveling.  This is just not a good time to be going anywhere.  Too much craziness with the weather.

Okay, I may have missed this catching up, but what does that bolded part mean?! I have to get a bike soon and I'm not sure the best choice, though it sounds like a road bike. So what does that lingo mean? We've got a good bike store in town, I'm hoping to find a decent used one to start...gotta stay in the hundreds not the thousands, oof.

While I'm still patting myself on the head for getting in the pool, our university pool is now closed for 10 days. And I'm thinking I don't work out often or long enough... I've got a Concept II rower at home and oodles of workout tapes, and plans to take a masters swim class and spinning classes once they start up again at the end of January.

So my question....? How many hours per week are you guys and gals working out? Like real sweaty hard workouts? I'm a wimp and I need to get over it, so I need a reasonable target to build up to because I think I've been taking it too easy. Right now I'm thinking about working out more than actually working out, and that won't get me over the finish line in August Tongue out

Thanks!

Your ability to climb hills and ride fast is determined by the gears near the pedals (chain rings) and the gears on the rear wheel (cogs). Specifically, it's determined by the ratio of the teeth on the chainring divided by the teeth on the cog. The smaller the number the easier it is to pedal, but the slower you go. There are three common chainring setups: standard double (two chainrings), compact double (two smaller chainrings), and triple (3 chainrings). In general, these would each represent an "easier" alternative to the one preceding it. For a novice biker you would likely want a compact double or a triple on a road bike; you generally won't find a triple on a tri bike. I have a triple on my road bike and a compact double on my tri bike.

For my last mentor group I wrote a Gear Primer that you are welcome to read.

I love working out and I'm kinda anal about it. I generally workout 6 days a week, usually about 5-7 hours per week.

Sorry for the confusion.  That refers to the crank in the front.  A double has two gears and a triple has three.  A compact double has 2, but because of the gear ratio it has a bigger range than a standard double.

If you climb a lot of hills, I would go with the triple because it gives a bigger range of easy gears to high gears.

I usually work out about 5 or 6 days per week.  The mid-week workouts are usually 30 - 45 minutes and then an hour or more on the weekends.

I sweat a lot, so that's probably not the best indicator.

Well, I'm a complete novice - but,  I like to get in atleast 5 workouts a week = during the week they're between .5- 1.5 hours and on the weekend I try to do atleast a couple hours each day.  However, I'm also ramping up for marathoning, so I'm trying to increase my long runs on the weekends.

I try to workout at least 5 days a week, from 45 min - 1 hr workout.  It hasn't been happening in December with so much going on.  I am feeling like a slacker looking at some of the logs of the members in our group because I'm barely getting my running in and no other cross training.  After the kids go back to school, I'm going to have to crank it up again.

OK - is there any way to bookmark our group, and then having it automatically bring me to the first post that I haven't read yet?

I just wanted to say in general that I'm thankful for this mentor group. Even though we're all "strangers", I can already tell results from knowing that everything I log regarding my training & nutrition all of you can see. That has certainly made me think twice about what I'm eating and is helping me get moving more, even if it is just for a 1/2 hour walk.

Thank you all for the inspiration and encouragement so far. I will warn you...this weekend I get a 'pass' on the healthy eating because my brother is getting married! Laughing But I am still going to try and be brutally honest in my log!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

I work out at least 4x a week from 1 - 3 hours per day. And when I add my swim sessions again in Jan  it will be 6 or 7x /week, but I should try to take a day off.  All of them are pretty much all out workouts, as I work with a trainer for all of them and a swim coach when I swim.   I'm sort of addicted to my workouts now.

The one thing I need/want to add to my training is more time running.  I'm pretty much a wimp when it comes to running outside in our winter weather, so need to go to a place where there is a track or treadmill available.  Not sure which is the best to run on ..... what do you runners suggest to a beginner runner???

Happy Holidays to everyone!  Travel safe if your on the road ... and MERRY CHRISTMAS  everyone!!!
