My wife and I used to love to watch figure skating but it seems to have lost its lustre. The boys and I usually watch the snowboarding and freestyle skiing. Like DJ, I also like the spped skating. For the crashes of course

HereForALaugh - 2010-02-12 9:52 AM Hey guys,
I'm headed to Austin tomorrow morning for the Valentine's Day 26.2 (yes, I know, not a thrill for my Valentine, but she's learned to deal with me and my quirks). I feel like my calf is healed, but laying off of it for essentially a whole month makes me a little nervous that I've lost some conditioning. Anyway, I'm going out with the 3:40 bunch just like I'm 100%. If it's not there, then I hope to rock back and just try to fend off the 4:00 crowd that should be chasing me. We'll see how it goes.
I won free tickets to the Houston Aero hockey game Sunday at 4pm. So, not much to to recover. Just jump in the car and head straight back to Houston. Hopefully, my Valentine still loves me enough to do the driving. We'll have to see how that goes too.
Wish me luck...on both fronts!

im sure you are going to far surpass any expactations you have for this race.......just remember, stay focused and enjoy the ride....even chat some people up, especially after mile 20, they love that!!!  oh, as far as the recover, take the stairs backwards, drink choco milk and GREAT luck getting the lovely spouse to drive!!

Well, I finished Austin 26.2! I wound up going to plan B as I suspected I might. Stayed with 3:40 pacer through ~15, then started getting really crampy. So, per plan, pulled back on the reins and held of the 4:00 bunch. Finish time 3:56:52! Man, I hate hills!!!

hard to say why you mightve felt sluggish as i saw nothing........in your logs..........however.  i would start looking at thursday night and what you did on that night.  did you get enough rest and relaxation to pull you thru to a good race?  how was your diet on that night as well.  the night two nights prior to race day is equally if not more important than the night before race day.......so start there and work forward.  friday, did you take it easy all day or were you running around like a crazed lunatic all uber busy and whatnot.........now friday night, diet....find foods that agree with your system and what works for you.  its going to be different from person to person (night before for me is usually something like spaghetti........just cuz i love italion food!!!).  for breakfast on race day i like to have something light that wont sit in my stomach for hours on end......so i have like half a bagel with peanut butter and a banana, something along those lines..........so that all taken into account...........does it make sense?  hope it helps..

whats everyone else's prerace routine?  start with two days prior to the big event!!!

To be honest, I try not to eat anything "heavy" the day before a race. No beer or anything like that, lots of water and gatorade G2 type stuff. I carb load starting a week before the race up until about 2 or 3 days before. No need to keep eating pasta the night before, doesnt do anything according to everything I read in college. I eat some fruits and nuts and a salad most of the time before a race. The morning of is normally pancakes, plain(no butter or syrup) only if im hungry. if im not hungry is a power bar. I have also done the opposite. I was at nationals for swimming, ate perfect the week before I got there, water, juice, pasta, chicken, no beef etc. Swam my first race and absolutely SUCKED! I didnt get last but it was close enough for my taste. After that I didnt care what I ate, I was in it to have a good time. I ate a huge burger that night, the next night we had buffalo chicken pizza and some rum drink(not alot but probably 6oz). I swam the morning after that and turned in my 2nd fastest time id ever done in that event. So I have done it both ways, with all kinds of results. Some days youre on, some days not so much.

I always eat consistently even 1 or 2 days before a race. However, I lay off anything too greasy the night before. I like to really pig out to an early dinner (5pm) the night before (spaghetti, lots of bread and 2 or 3 beers). Race morning: plain bagel, half banana, 1/2 cup coffee and water.

Hey guys,

Sorry it has been a while, but I am finally back to working out and posting here.  Forgive me.  I had to take 2 weeks off due to my sinus issues (still not gone yet and I have been on drugs for over two weeks).  I ran last week for the first time and felt a "twinge" in my left shin along with tightness in my knee.  I do not want to battle shin plints again so I decided to take the whole week off, rest and ice, and get back at it today.

Had a nice easy run with some slight discomfort in the knee, but nothing in the shin.  I will be taking is easy for the next two weeks to make sure I don't go from hurt to injured.

Hey, has anyone done a triathlon with an indoor swim?  I live in Lafayette, Indiana, home of Purdue University and they are putting on a Triathlon at the end of April with an indoor 500 meter swim.  The swim part is not a big issue to me, just wondering if it screws with the transition and changing our your gear and stuff.

Hope everyone has a great week training. I am looking forward to the season starting in April (for me anyway).

I'm in a sophomore year slump I think.  Last year was great for me getting off the couch, to running 2 minutes, then 5k, 10K, a sprint, an oly, and a half mary.  Lost 60 pounds over the course of the year, but over the winter, celebrated too much continuing to eat and drink like i was training hard.  Gained half the weight back.  I'm struggling with running maybe 3 times a week (about 10-15 miles/week), and rarely getting some bike time in on the mag-trainer.  My training logs are up to date and look pathetic compared to last year.  We've been hammered here in DC with cold and snow , so it's really thrown me a little, but that's an excuse compared you guys in Wisc.  I've got a 10 miler coming up in April, then a 10K two weeks after that.  I think I'll complete those OK.  I'm really worried about my ability to complete the Columbia Oly coming up May 25th.  Need to get my mojo back.

Any coaching love, or kicks in the available?

DTFU AND GET YER AZZ OFF THE COUCH!!!!

just kidding..........i think its natural to think the way you are currently..... i think one gets a sense of "been there, done that, i can do it again easy" kind of thinking and its easier to put off workouts when in that mode.  i went thru the same kind of thing during last years "off season" with thoughts of "dam, missed another, oh well, i can start FOR REAL next week!"  pretty soon its time for the events and well.................bummer!!  bottom line:  well, i think the opening sentence says it all!!!  time to go!

Managed one of my better weeks in a long time this week.  Except for the jerk in the Jeep SUV who deliberately faded into me to make me jump into the snow bank.  All part of the territory I guess.

And it's going to be pool time again.  Got my prescript goggles replaced, but managed to break my glasses because of running in the cold.  I guess that's serendipity.  I look cool at work in my goggles!
