Signed up yesterday for my (probably) final triathlon of the year, the North East Olympic Triathlon in mid-August.  So, that gives me three races in about 7 weeks once summer starts, one "B" sprint race and two "A" Olympics.  I have some strategically scheduled vacations right after each "A" race for recovery.

Still thinking about doing Skipjack in MD at the end of September.  It's a weird, HIM-ish distance (1.2, 64, 10) that is on the same course more-or-less as Eagleman, which I am for sure doing in 2012.

I'm just a bit concerned about that race being three weeks before my "A" running race of the year, the Baltimore Half-Marathon.

Sulcus - 2011-02-01 8:54 PM To start you all off right in the month of February (of which, I LOOOOOVE the theme.  Discipline is something that I lost a long time ago and have been struggling to regain...)

Bike:1h 00m  - 16.21 Mi
Run:30m  - 2.45 Mi
Strength:45m
Elliptical Training:50m
Snow Shoveling:1h 25m
Walking:2h 30m

As sad and pathetic as those figures are for January, they represent a start.  A very small step on a much larger journey.

With any luck, I'll get an "ice day" off from work so I can sign up for my races tomorrow.  Having my schedule all figured out is always motivating.  Keep those fingers crossed!

Exactly.  And your January looks a lot better than my December did.  Let's make February better, for sure.

Happy Groundhog's Day everybody!

That movie is hilarious.  "Don't drive angry!"

It was back when Bill Murray was still funny and only moderately nuts.

7.) My friend Mike Hall has a bumper sticker that reads:  WWLD?  This stands for What Would Lance do?  Lance Armstrong is a beast.  Yes he has amazing genetics, but despite great genes the guy has amazing discipline.  When not training this guy gets up to 185 lbs without batting an eyelash.  He's a big guy by nature, however he knows that to race at a world class level he's gotta be whip thin.  One of Lance's cardinal rules when getting down to race weight is: No Eating After 7 o'clock.  When I follow this rule, the pounds just drop off.  Eat dinner and then that's it.  Have dessert once a week, on a weekend, the night before a long bike or run, but the other 6 days Do Not eat after 7!!  The first few nights will be HELL.  But then amazingly your body adjusts, as the human body does so well   Not eating after 7 till the morning is an amazingly simple little rule that will drop pounds off you so fast.  And if it's 8:30 or 9:30 and you're hungry - drink a tall glass of ice cold water

Great tips on food!  What works for me is eating snacks throughout the day and making sure the meals have carbs and protein.  ....speaking of food, I am starving!Smile

Great Job Everyone.  Keep Building and Moving Forward.  February is a very short month.  For February I'm going to give myself and all of you the same assignment:  FOCUS ON DISCIPLINE.  Whatever that means to you, discipline in diet, running, biking, staying positive Moving Toward Our Goals ... just do it.  Again, February has only 3 full weeks!!  It's a great month to dial in Discipline and Consistency and quickly feel great about it come March 1st.  Let's Rock! Spring is riiight around the corner

Thanks for the pep talk!!  For me it means all of these! (discipline in diet, running, biking, staying positive Moving Toward Our Goals) and swimming.  After work I am going to see my PT for my foot, I hope we have some progress!

Congrats on locking in some races!
That IS a tough call about Skipjack.  There is a lot of risk in doing a HIM-ish race 3 weeks before your "A" running race including the obvious of getting injured or not recuperating in time.  If it is important for you to do really well on the 1/2 mary I probably vote you skip Skipjack. Pun intended Laughing
This would also give you more time to prepare, do some speed work and focus more on the 1/2.

My focus this month is gonna be on swim form, actually the fact that I don't have any. Smile  In the past, I've just plowed through swims with a sustained effort fighting the water the whole time thinking improving fitness would result in big performance improvements. Clearly, this isn't working. So, I'm primarily concentrating on drills to improve my balance as it is way to the right now. Hopefully, this will pay dividends as we get into the season.

It's funny, there's advice all over this forum stating that swim form is king and that's where the greatest gains are to be had, yet I kept doing it my way with little results. Oh well, live and learn.

Checked out your blog and I would have to say that your observations (1 through 9) are pretty accurate in my opinion. Spot on! Pretty solid month of training as well. Are you sure that swimming is your limiter, because based on your time, it would seem to me that you move through the water pretty well. I would say that swimming at that pace in February will get you out of the water in June for your IM is pretty decent shape. Not sure of your goals but you seem to be off to a nice start. Train on!

thanks for the nutrition advise.  I generally eat pretty healthy but boy do I snack quite often.

I'm going to have to get some multi vitamin.  never consider that as part of training since I consider it a placebo.

by the way how about post workout drink?  I try to have a protein shake, is that sufficient?  I read that there homemade concoction that we can make.  what have people tried?  usually after I'm done with work out, I either have a fruit protein smoothie or tall glass of water

Thanks George!
Last year when I did a half ironman distance race my swim was 39:00, SO many people beat me out of the water!  I thought I would have finished quicker, but I guess my execution or swim endurance just wasn't there. I plan to continue lifting weights 1 hour a week and swimming at least two times  a week.  Have a great weekend!

Happy Friday everyone!  Congrats on the January totals Rene - very impressive compared to last year.  Your blog points are interesting.  I laughed at point 3 - WHEN I was working out consistently I remember thinking that on average I might have 2 or sometimes 3 showers a day - thankfully they weren't all at my home   I'm in awe of point 5 and completely agree with #6.  I put a movie in with subtitles, blare my iPOD and direct the fan right on me.  I rarely last longer than an hour before I feel that annoying prickle of boredom.  Maybe I need to focus on the race more.

So what's everyone have planned for the weekend?  I'll live vicariously through all of you.  Both my child and I caught this freaking bug again and  it would seem I have bronchitis AGAIN!  I read some posts stating that riding your bike too soon prevents you from healing properly.  I don't think that was my problem - I think I actually got better for about 3 days and then poof!  Infected again!  I might do a really easy spin if I can but definitely keeping it easy til this has cleared.

Enjoy the weekend all!

My daughter has had this bug thing off and on since September and she's generally never sick.  I've had two bouts of bronchitis, too.  I treated the second one differently and I basically started working out the first day it started to improve, but I wore my HRM and kept it way low (like 100-105) the whole time and just got a little sweat going on the Expresso bike trainer for a couple of days.  I was still sick for about the same duration but I came out of the second one feeling much better.  Get well and get fit, in that order.

This weekend calls for Bikram Yoga today, and then probably a 4-5 mile run tomorrow morning.

Yeah, seriously.  I would take that pace in a heartbeat.  You could finish your IM swim and have a picnic lunch and a bottle of wine before I'd get out of the water.

Rene, great blog.  Nice totals for January, too.

There have been studies validating that Chocolate Milk is indeed a fantastic recovery drink. Good stuff   Me, personally, I rotate between Myoplex light Protein shakes and Hammer Recoverite.  I usually drink the protein shake after swimming, and Recoverite after running or cycling.

One thing about the nutrition, I cannot emphasize enough DRINK WATER.  Water is like oil and gasoline to a car.  Helps keep us balanced.  The multi-vitamin is good also once you start some higher volume training.

I would just like to give Rene HUGE KUDOS for taking everyone's advice and resting the running feet and focusing on the swimming and cycling.  Just incredibly smart, smart training.  I would just suggest, too, that when you do start up again running, start very slowly.  Way to go Rene!!!

As for me, I had a crazy-hectic weekend but it's still NO EXCUSE - I dropped the ball on my cycling and missed two cycling sessions, including a 2 hour Long Bike.  BUT, I plan to make it up tonight.  I also ate poorly Friday night and Saturday.  But ya know what - I am NOT going to beat myself up over it.  Because beating myself up will just make me more guilty and make me liable to go on eating poorly.  Instead, I am moving on and eating right today.  I'm a human being with a hectic life, kids, career and other obligations... I'm not perfect.  I had a bad weekend of training and eating; time to learn from it and move on.

Always moving forward, looking forward.  Today is a new day, new start of the week, let's DO THIS!!

Ummmm well I got in a solid hour last week!  Plus plunged back in to the pool after a 5 month hiatus of sorts.  I REALLY need to get back to consistent training - at this point I don't even care what kind of training - I just want to see peach!  But like Bobby said - no beating myself up.  Today is another day to make a fresh concerted effort.  Got on the bike this morning and hoping to hit the gym on my lunch.  It's snowing AGAIN!  I shovelled my little plot of land 3x this weekend!

What's everyone have planned for this week?

I'll be REALLY happy if I can get a bike in MWF, weights in MWF, and a run in on T&Th.  Not sure about Thursday though because - just to make my life WAY more fun - I've been summoned for jury duty.  I'm going to try to fight it as I'm leaving the country soon but ya... Thursday will be a day where I become a VERY politically incorrect woman - letting anything evil and shocking escape from my mouth in the hopes of getting dismissed

Definitely no reason to beat yourself up/feel guilty over a a couple of days of indulging in some good eats.  I mean life happens, holidays happen, you get together with family and friends, whatever. A couple of donuts and a Big Mac now and again doesn't mean your not eating healthy, it just means your living your life and allowing yourself to enjoy the occasional treat within the structure of the very healthy lifestyle you lead.

I believe, for me, that depriving myself  100% of the time makes it more likely that I'll fall into prolonged periods of unhealthy eating if I don't allow myself the occasional guilt free reward.  Last night I ate real well during the game, knew I would before I went out and thoroughly enjoyed it. I mean if your gonna do it, may as well do it right. Laughing
