Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just finished my workout and it is 10pm. I came home tired from a long day at work. I thought I would share this. My gym is finally clearing out at lunch time. All those wonderful New Year's resolutions that seemed incredibly attainable and worthwhile are being forgotten by the masses. The fridge at work was packed during the first two weeks of the year with people bringing in healthy cooked meals from home. I could hardly get my food in there. There's a lot of room this week. Let's resolve to not join the masses of people giving up on their resolutions. Remember: re·solve/ri'zälv/ noun - Firm determination to do something.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The kids at school are dropping like flies. Our program also has two teachers out sick. We have got some nasty illnesses circulating the classes. I developed a sore throat yesterday which so far has just stayed a sore throat. Usually it's the start of a cold. My biggest complaint, besides the throat, is the incredible fatigue! I could barely move this morning. Now, lunch time, I've got a bit more energy, but not my usual self. UG! Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() deehtz - 2012-01-18 12:01 AM I am doing pretty good with getting in a short daily workout. But I am not getting in a longer run-specific workout. The only event I have scheduled is a 10K in May. I need to get my distance back up. And if I am going to do a tri this year, I had better knock the cobwebs off of my bike and also get in that pool again! I have so far to go .... It's great you are doing something daily. Getting back in the pool is such a treat! GO for it! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() otisbrown - 2012-01-11 7:10 PM Hey Everybody, I am just caught up on the board and it looks like everyone is doing well on the training front. For those that have the PF issue in the morning I find that doing the PF stretches and PF massages at night help a lot. I get a lot less tightness in my heal in the morning. Here are a couple of links: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/medical/IM02897 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxu433AIb7Y
Kim, Congrats on your 5k run. It is a great feeling to achieve a goal. Steph, With a view like that, I dont think I would be able to get much work done. Scott and Enrique, Are you guys supplementing protein in your diets? Based on your descriptions it seems like the amount of protein intake would be on the lower side.
Cheers Some new somatic stretches for my hamstring seem to be helping my knee... which I hope in turn will help my tight calves...and on down. I really really really hate wearing my boot thing to bed, but I've had in on a few nights the past week or so. blech. Once these two half marathons are over, I think I may be done with distance running. Barring a miracle or a PT that can help. I'm not giving up yet. But geesh. I feel like I have someone else's foot. Someone who can't run. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry about your foot. It would be great if we never got injured, right? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm not supplementing much. I add a few tablespoons of powder protein into post recovery shakes, but that's it. Each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) I will eat either eggs, meat, chicken, turkey, or fish with a veggie side so I get a good amount of protein from that. 20 to 30 grams each meal. Then I also eat nuts which have proteins in them. broccoli and leafy vegetables also have proteins so that all adds up. As a triathlete, I'm not trying to add muscle bulk. Lean is better for a triathlete (generally speaking) so this diet works for me. I'm pretty lean at 5'10" and 163 lbs. Before eating a Paleo diet a couple years ago, I was at 177 lbs. so I lost 14 lbs during that 1st year and now have been stable at 163 for over a year. When I trained for Ironman, my weight got down to 158!! Man was I lean... a little too lean, but I was eating and eating and eating and I just dropped to 158 and couldn't go higher. I was burning so many calories.... I dont know what I was thinking... I had this vision of berries and nuts for breakfast and lunch. I did find another reference that I have found helpful. http://paleodietlifestyle.com/ I am not sure if this is a diet that I will be able to fully commit to, but there are certain things that I can take from it to enhance my diet. |

I'll bookmark that one. Thanks. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The adjustment so far in the diet is being at work. There's a good cafeteria downstairs and the vegetable selections are ok, but I'll get pretty tired of that. I eat berries, walnuts, a little cinnamon for dessert at night. Eggs for breakfast. This weekend we are going to cook a couple of the stews from the web site Otis posted. Instead of putting stuff on rice or bread, we now use sweet potatoes as the delivery system. YUM. I go for a cortizone shot wednesday so I can do my half marathon Sunday. Hope it works. Meanwhile I'm icing. I've also decided to order that swimming watch. Thanks Enrique... I can swim and I love to swim so it will be nice to know how far I go! There are occasional OWS competitions around here and I think I might do some of those. Strength training is the focus for a while. It's really the only way I've ever been able to lose any weight, and I think it (and losing 25lbs) is the key to being able to run well. How's everybody getting through their winter training? Any hiccups to report? New successes? I know that my parents in Iowa, and my friends in Chicago got pelted with snow yesterday. How's everybody doing out there? Stephanie Edited by stephsprint 2012-01-21 6:21 AM |

I grew up eating a lot of fresh caught fish, pheasant, quail etc. But now... rarely. My husband found some grass fed beef at the supermarket and nearly fainted at the price! There's site online but I think we'll try to eat more fish in the meantime. I understand perfectly what they are saying about the grass fed stuff, but really... $pendy! |

Fortunately, I found some grass fed beef in the local market at a reasonable price. More expensive for sure, but not too bad. One thing about fish is that I found out that Alaskan Salmon is one with the least amount of mercury. I pretty much will only eat Alaskan Salmon these days, when I eat fish. Winter training is going great. Mostly all indoors, trainer and treadmill. I have some hard workouts this weekend and of course some fun with the family. Enjoy your weekend all! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Been out of action pretty much this entire week. Started with a sore throat on Monday, which wasn't bad, but it slowly became worse. Then Thursday evening the sore throat finally moved upwards. My biggest complaint however, is overwhelming fatigue. I tried to run on Thursday, legs felt like lead and actually hurt. I slept 11 hours last night and woke up tired, and took a nap today! WTF! My kids in my class are all sick. I've had quite a few absences, and some that should have been home, but were coughing and sneezing in my face instead. I didn't stand a chance. Oh well, occupational hazard. But, I'm getting very edgy. I was supposed to go on a long run today. I'm hoping to feel good enough to go to my computrainer class tomorrow. |

Ann-Marie i got a cervelo P2. I hooked up with another BTer and we took advantage of their "share the ride" deal. I had been trying to decide between adding aero bars to my road bike or buying a tri bike. When this deal presented itself, it made my decision for me. Hope you start feeling better soon!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chi Running clinic today at 2:00. It's at a park with a nice soft track. I'm going to the clinic and then run a few miles on the soft track there...last long run before the ING half next Sunday. I have barely run at all in a month, so this might be a good way to ease into 4 or 5 miles. Strap on my Newtons and go! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anne Marie....Ooooo! a P2. very nice! The VQ where my computrainer takes place just happens to be located next door to a Trek store. Even has a handy dandy door from the VQ area directly into the store. I believe they also have tractor beams that grab you and pull you in, because last week, despite my saying I wasn't going to go drool over the bikes, I suddenly found myself standing next to some very sweet rides. No idea how I got there, really. Anyway, we (my friend and I) laughed at (but secretly coveted) the $12,000 bike, but then a more modestly priced 2011 model caught my eye. Because it's last year's model it's on sale. I asked if the price was firm and guy said someone could work with me on that. Hmmmm. My roadie is a Trek and I have loved it. I also have a Trek card so can pay on same as cash terms. If I make it to class today, I will go in for another look and perhaps get it set up on the trainer and see how it feels. To be continued...... On the illness note...still feeling somewhat crappy and sluggish but want to go to class. Kinda thinking a good sweat, or at least getting out and moving will make me feel better. Husband thinks I'm nuts. But I never listen to him anyway. Edited by suzimmer 2012-01-22 9:42 AM |

Now, I have no more excuses; I must get on the bike and I have to start looking for a HIM. Suzie, I think buying a bike is like buying a car - once you start "window" shopping, you know it won't be long until you have a new one. Sounds like you'll be able to get a great deal on the Trek, so it will be even harder to walk away Ann-Marie |
