Jambago, sorry to hear the calf is still bothering you man! Wish I could give you some good advice, ut the only thing I know to do is to give it time to recover, I know, that;s sucky advice. Sorry

Mk, sorry to hear about your cat also. I am not a cat guy so I am sure if I could spend that kind of money on a cat, but still, I hope it recovers soon.

Sounds like alot of us are hitting that wall and coming across as really being worn out. I can't stress to everyone how important rest and recovery is to training. Listen to your body and if you need an extra rest day, go ahead and take one, it won;t kill your training.

Jambago - 2012-02-20 6:28 AM Hey all, how was the weekend? I'm going to give a short vent - I did a short trail run with my brother the other day with only a little bit of a twinge to my calf, after about a 2 week break following that last 5K were I really ticked it off! So I started my HM training yesturday and was doing a 9:1 run/walk to simulate a short walk going through aid stations (still with a 9:40 mile) and felt like I could aerobically go the full distance right now. Unfourtunately, at about my 3rd repeat my calf was letting me know it's displeasure and at the 5th repeat, it screamed so loud, I needed to stop. I've justed started the stengthing program to try and help it and will take another week or two off from running... again. My HM is 4/22. I feel I have sufficent endurance to complete it, but I'm worried about getting my mileage up enough with this constant rehab. Just a short bit of vent - any motovation you all could send would be truly appreciated! I hope you all had a good weekend!

Crazy.  What do you suppose you did to it?  Just a pull?  Have you tried all the basic medical home remedies?

Heating pads, aspirin, some light stretching, etc?

I seem to be a walking ache/injury these days.  I have been doing TONS of strength training - pretty extreme stuff from my normal routine.  It seems something is always aching/sore/hurting.  Today it's my lower back and right shoulder.

Second trainer ride... 24 minutes, 10 km... average speed of 25km/h.   Felt pretty wiped out.  Is this normal?  I mean when I am on the road, with stop lights and everything I can average 28 ~ 30 km/h for over an hour (moving time only, obviously) without much trouble.  Hold 25km/h for 24 minutes on the trainer felt MUCH MUCH harder.

Just wondering.

The trainer can be as tough as you make it. Just remember this, when riding on the trainer, 30 minutes of riding means 30 minutes of pedaling. There are no stop signs, no cruising, just straight pedaling.

Plus if you don't have a fan, you overheat which makes it harder (at least for me).  Plus mentally?  Riding outside there are so many more mental distractions.  Inside?  Not as much.  I tend to try and use a TV to distract me or an audio book.

Definitely having trouble getting motivated...  Still having pain in shoulder some, PT is working a little.  Legs feel like lead when I try to run...   Work is pretty slow right now and weight is just hovering and not going down.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Well, a couple things.

There are many times I don't "want" to workout, but I just make it part of me day - like brushing my teeth or eating lunch.  You just do it.

Here is a technique, just put your shoes on and go outside for a jog.  Even for just 5-10 minutes.  If you don't want to keep going?  Pack it in.  But most likely, once you just get STARTED, you will feel better and keep going.

Also, if my "workout" seems like a drag and I don't want to do it.  I try to think of something FUN to do.  Maybe dust off the MTN bike and just go for a trail ride.  Go for a trail run.  Take a yoga class, play some basketball/volleyball.  SOMETHING.

This stuff should be FUN!  Just like a child who swims/bikes/runs.  They don't consider those things a "workout" but just something fun to do.  Look at it like that.  Something fun.

Thats the best advice I keep hearing! just have fun, if ever it gets to a point were its something that 'has' to be done, the enjoyment loses its luster and becomes like a chore. We all have enough chores in our lives, so find a way to remember, this is something we all want!

Of course my caveat will be... except the reocurring aches and pains! But such a small price to pain for the glory of it all! )

RE: the calf issue

I've been doing the typical routine of rest, ice, nsaids, and always gradually getting back into it. A few days before I reinjured it doing the 5K I did a nice slow run for 7 miles and felt great. I know I hammered out that 5K hard and that's what did it to me. The ortho seems pretty certain (he said 100% certain) I need to strengthen it it. So that's the plan. I'll stay off the road and trails for anthoer two weeks and focus on strength with an emphaisis on the calfs and shoulder (the other problem area). The HM will still be there on 4/22, and hopefully with the help of the ortho gods watching over me, so will I!

But alas, no worries, this is only a small minor set back on my road to meeting this years goals. And, why yes, they are totaly enjoyable, too!

Sorry I've been out of the loop - very busy and somewhat frustrated with the recurring ankle/foot injury.

About motivation - x2 on the "just get out there" for a little bit. I find if I just get started, I'm 95% of the time willing to finish the workout (especially for swim - it's such a process to drive to the pool, get changed, shower, get in the pool, swim, get out of the pool, shower, get changed and drive back). I also think that unless you are training for a specific race with a specific plan - you should do what makes it fun. If you are training for a specific race/event - you can shake up the plan a bit - like doing a mtn bike on a bike day.

The hard thing for me with this injury is I *really* like running. It's got to be the most fun for me right now and the injury isn't really allowing me to run much. It's also pretty cold here (not as cold as usual, but it's still cold) and I'm not even a little bit motivated to swim in a pool. Right now I'm rationalizing my pathetic swim volume to myself by saying I've still got 3.5 months before the Patriot HIM to get my act together...and it's all technique - right?

Hope you all are well - I've been doing a lot of thinking about the weight training per Kido, but haven't actually pulled the trigger. Maybe a quick 20 minute session each day after the short run. What muscle groups/exercises would you focus on for the most bang for your buck?

Enjoy your weeks!

I have a 10k trail run on Sunday. Last years time was 56:58, so I am shooting for anything under that time!  Not a big fan of trail runs, but it is something different!

Had a good run this morning.  Almost PRed for my 30s and 40s.  Missed by 8 seconds.  Head wind on the last 1/2 mile cost some time, but I mind gamed myself off as well.  Saw 31:08 on my watch with a ways to go and walked a little, instead of pushing through.  Then I thought I only had 2 minutes for the PR and not 3, I got back in on my game by thinking, don't waste a minute here walking.  Did not put on a real kick, but sped up some when I saw the 3 mile marker.

5K in 34:42.2 splits average was 11:11.  First mile was 10:38, second was 11:04, so no negative splits, but I have not really run in 2 weeks.

3K next week, it is setting up to be an all out run time.  Previous best was 11:24 pace, so that PR is going to fall next week.  Looking for a sun 21 minutes.

Hope everyone else has a good week-end run as well.

Great job all! All that training is starting to pay off, eh?

I don't have a race until the beginning of April - but I'm starting to get itchy...still haven't spent nearly enough time in the water, but I'm hopeful the ice will melt quickly this year and I'll get to swim outside before my first tri in June.

We are lucky living here in the South, we should be able to jump in the lake with a wetsuit on in early to mid April!

I know this has been asked alot, but when to do you retired your running shoe?

Here is my race report on my half marathon.

Do you noticed any different or feel that tells you its time to get a new one or you just get a new one at every 250-300 mile  all the time?

I log my shoes on the equipment section of BT, so I know when that mileage is coming up. I can usually tell they are getting there anyways, my feet will be sore or other parts of my leggs, and I know it is time for new shoes
