Extreme Veteran 608 Iceland | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Hi all, its already late afternoon here but for most of you, your day is only starting up.... I went with my husband to the inside track again this morning where he did a 3000m race. While he was warming up and racing I managed to walk 3K which is a nice addition to the day. Then I rode an hour on the trainer when I came home. Just an easy ride with being aero a lot. Saddle is getting a little better but of course the sit bones are still sore...
KELLY, wow that sure is cold! Good luck in the race and try to stay warm!! RUSTY, have fun on your long run PATRICK, sounds like you have the day planned out well Run Forest Run
Hope everyone else has a great day as well |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up I'm going to try to get a trainer 'ride' in today, but if I don't, not a big deal. Its my final 'day off' before I start my HIM training tomorrow. I have a zillion things around the house to do, spend some family time, etc. Slept in today until past 8 AM, which for me is like sleeping until noon for other folks . Overall, its a mental health/prep day. Did I mention its about 10 degrees out as well? Brrrr! |

What is everyone else doing today? Here's the summary from the run today. Not a real "race" but more of a 8.6 mile organized run. Probably about 50 people running. Temp was 5 degrees at the start and the "real feel" was -11 with the nasty wind. I was super cold the entire time even thought I had two layers on the bottom and three on top. Kind of felt like I was waddling and still sucking some serious wind. Couldn't feel my feet for the entire run, ended up tripping a few times (once because my shoe laces were untied). Just wasn't a day for me to run fast. I have an easy 90 minutes on the trainer tonight and then start my last block of base training tomorrow. |

Yesterday I spun 15 and hopped on the mil for a mile to see how the transition would go. Not too bad. Otherwise, it's a family weekend with cleaning and running around! QOTD: When people write that they plan to train, for example, ten hours a week that means ten total hours and not ten in each discipline, right? If it's the latter, I am totally hosed. It's hard enough getting at least an hour a day of something let alone multiple hours in multiple areas.

Susan Susan, 10 hours a week is for total training. Most Age Groupers don't go much over 15 hours a week unless training for IM or doing a big volume plan. Kelly here does big volume and trains for IM. Great job getting a run and bike in with family home. |

Master 1736 Midcoast Maine | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Today is a usual Monday for me in terms of workouts (Jorge's plan for 1 hour on the trainer along with a short run). I'm off from work and the girls are off from school. I had hoped to sleep in today, but my alarm went off at 5:15, my eldest daughter's alarm went off at 6:00a (so she could get to a ski race in time), her backup alarm went off at 6:30a, my youngest daughter's alarm went off at 7:00a and then the cat and dog decided to fight it out on the bed at 7:15...<sigh> Just finished week two of Paleo for Athletes. It is harder for me on weekends for a couple of reasons: 1) I usually do my long bike and run on the weekend and haven't really figured out fueling/post-workout refueling and 2) cooking for and with the kids. Must focus on the long term - right? Any suggestions for staying motivated to eat well would be appreciated. |

We played Titans Quest Immortal Combat and saved the world. Yes, I am a gamer. Today I plan on doing a 4 mile run, laundry, recycle run, and grocery shopping. I'll move the swim to Tuesday...would rather be around the house vs driving to the Y. If time permits...we'll continue to save the world this evening! Enjoy the day! |

Extreme Veteran 608 Iceland | Subject: RE: KathyG's 2012 Awesome Mentor Group-Full up Good morning Everyone, I got my workout schedule for this week yesterday afternoon and I expected a rest day or a very low volume day for today and thats why I had scheduled a massage at noon. Turns out he wanted me to bike in the am and run in the afternoon but I managed to change things around as my legs are really tired after the first week back and I did not want to workout after the massage. So I did my bike workout and then enjoyed the massage (it was a lipomassage, first time ever and it was quite interesting) and now I have the rest of the day off. I will take a nap now (hopefully get 2 hours) as I have to fly tonight and tomorrow night. Germany and back both times...oh joy @MIKE, great job on getting started! "A journey of a million miles starts with a single step" @KELLY, great job on that race in the freezing cold! Don't worry about the times, just be happy that you survived @SUSAN, as many already mentioned it's 10 hours in total. 10 hours per discipline would probably be almost impossible with a full time job and family life. I think I averaged about 7 hours per week last year but I also had about 9 weeks completely off. I usually train 8-10 before the seasons starts and then about 10-13 during the season. @KATHY, 6 weeks already! Thats good. Time is flying! Let us know how it goes! @RHONDA, enjoy saving the world again tonight @JENNIFER, I know its hard on the weekends, I think its like this for everyone. Just focus on the main reason why you want to loose the weight and then try to recall this every time you want to divert from your plan. And figure the pre- and post workout nutrition out as soon as possible. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!
Happy Monday everyone! |

I"m also going to start being strict with my nutrition choices. Hi all - I did have the day "off" today, but that of course just means no class to teach. Spent the morning on a service project here in the neighborhood which was nice. The bulk of my professional work deals with community outreach and service-based learning, but I get very little opportunity to work here in my own neighborhood. This afternoon I got in a nice hard effort on the trainer, and now am trying to cram in all of the work that I did not get done today. Dinner is in the works, and one conference call to make then should be home free for the evening! Kathy - I cannot believe it has been 6 weeks post op already. That is really great - excited to hear how your day went - I hope well! |

Mike, we'll learn so much from you too :-) Hope the run went well. I had a brilliant OWS down at the Bay today, even managed to swim through a big clump of jellies without freaking. There were 28 of us and my hand got all scratched from someone's nails when we were practising mass starts. Thought this was supposed to be a non-contact sport! The weather is going to be minging here for the rest of the week with the min not going below about 24C according to the met office, nasty. Last night was gorgeous - got all the way down to 16C so everyone got a good sleep. I used to ski a lot in Scotland and reading about all your cold temperatures is really making me pine for the slopes. |

While chasing the dog across the ice at the local pond this afternoon, I was pining for the open water. "minging" pronounced "mingin" is something really unpleasant. "Minging hangover" is probably it's best use. My son's school is very multi-cultural and he got upset one day that he didn't speak another language at home so told his teacher he spoke Scottish. Since then, I've been teaching him lots of Scottish words but his accent is deplorable. He does a good Sean Connery though which is hilarious coming out the mouth of a 7 year old in a tux. The OWS was nice this morning, not too much chop and just the right amount of early morning sun. Enjoy your day :-) |

As for motorists, "share the road" is not just a pleasantry, it is the law. Bicycles are not restricted to road shoulders and bike lanes. They are allowed on the roads, and can enter a center travel lane to turn left. Connecticut's "three-foot law" gives cyclists the right to that distance around themselves, even if they must use the travel lane to maintain three feet from an obstruction on the right. Is this a new law in CT? I wish all motorists would know the law and follow it. There have been several cycling deaths in the last year and the paper wrote an editorial about it. Its been the law for a while but it doesn't prevent drivers from doing obnoxious things. Shaun got mad at me last summer because I picked up the habit of grabbing onto cars mirrors when they try to see how close they can get to me. I chased down a lady that cut me off at an intersection. I was going straight at a green light. She turned right at that light just in front of me. My rear tire came off the pavement as I slammed on my brakes. I must have looked like a crazy lunatic while chasing her down. (I wouldn't have stopped had I been driving!) I asked her why she turned RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME JUST NARROWLY AVOIDING A CYCLIST CRASHING INTO HER CAR and she said....."I had a green light!" I said....."I had the same green light and I had the right-of-way to go straight!" Sheesh! Drivers just don't don't understand the rules when it comes to bikes and pedestrians. |

I don't try to make up any workouts that I missed. I just move on and accept the loss. My favorite cycling shorts are Sheila Moon and DeSoto. Pearl shorts rub me in the wrong way....if ya know what I mean. I have two different Terry saddles that I love. The Butterfly is on my road bike and the Damselfly is on my tri bike. What else have I missed over the past few days? Cheers friends! |

The sleet and snow is on it's way up here, but it was still really dark and pretty chilly (5 degrees F) this am when I got up to run, so much to the dog's disappointment, I ran in the basement. My treadmill has a "key" with a loop of thin rope as the emergency stop on it, sometimes in my flailing, I'll catch the rope, disengage the key and come to a halt, much to my surprise. Yeah - the "holy cr*p" feeling...since I haven't "officially" registered for any races yet, I don't have it yet - but I think 1/31 is going to be one of those days. The other day (for me) is when I'm packing up all my stuff to head to the venue and realize there is no turning back. |

I have read numerous web pages with mixed reviews and even have the opinion/position paper my niece produced for her Masters Degree which was written on the subject of 'barefoot' running. Thanks and have a great Tuesday. |
