Got a foot of snow over night, at my house just outside Cd'A - and it is supposed to snow all day.

Gonna have to rearrange this week's workout schedule, the roads haven't been plowed yet and there is no where to run, and it looks like I'll have to skip Masters tonight to dig out... I guess another trainer workout is in order - or maybe I'll just count two hours of shoveling snow as a strength workout.

We have the same sort of thing here in Spokane, getting ready to drop my wife off at the Y then go for 6+ miles on the Centennial Trail!  This might be a fun time to put on my gopro...

Yep, still skiing instead of other things...

December's totals:
Bike:9h 05m  - 115.43 Mi
Run:10h 05m 41s  - 48.53 Mi
Swim:9h 10m  - 24900.79 Yd
Skiing:21h 00m

I've got a question for you guys.... what HIM are you doing to prepare for this?  I'm debating between:

NOLA-  pros: I have a free place to stay 5 blocks from the finish, cheap airfare  Cons: maybe not a good test of my cycling since it's pancake flat.

St George - Pros: about 10 people from my tri club are doing it, so we can carpool and split hotel rooms.  Cons: I'm worried the bike may kill me.

Knoxville - pros: nice amount of bike difficulty.  Cons: $$$ (airfare and hotel)

I'm not considering Galveston b/c I've done that race 3x and I hate hate hate that run.

UGH.  This should not be a hard decision... but it is.

IMSG would be a great HIM before IMCDA. Bike course would be tough but great preparation for IMCDA. I'll be doing Galveston since it's easy to get to. It's flat but I'm hoping to hammer it to build some confidence. I will be in much better shape this year for Galveston than I was last year.

Why not try the HITS HIM in Marble Falls?  Decent amount of climbing and the timing is right (late April).

HITS just doesnt't thrill me. The thought of racing against 10 other people in my AG just doesn't sound fun.

Did you register today?  I hear it sells out fast.  I think I'll ahve time to recover especially since I plan to take my time doing it.  I really want the practice doing the downhills more than the uphills.  Maybe we'll see you there.  We have three in our group all doing the 200K.

I registered the day it opened.  I'm sure you will have time to recovery.  My plan calls for a 4hr/1hr brick workout.  I figured I could bike 60 miles of hills and then run for an hour after I finished.

Any idea on how full St George is?

I think it's a perfect race leading up to CDA. I'm trying to move some things around (an unfortunate trip to Disneyland with wife&kids), or some how make it part of my trip.

I did the full this past May and there is no question it will test your legs. I've ridden most of what will be the new course, and other than some weird detours (for mileage, I'm sure), it should be a spectacular bike ride.

I loved the scenery and the community was very very supportive. I really want to do this Half if I can swing it.

Yep I got in also for the 200K.  It should be fun.  I'll see you there.  I'll most likely run the next day since I'm not sure any of my travel mates will want to wait for me to do some kind of brick.  Supposed to be 50 in Michigan friday.  If I had a bike that could do it I would do an outside brick, but I only have my TT bike and it is not going out on the salt covered roads.

Have a great day group.

Hey guys,

How is everyone`s training?

I am one of those who has not booked accommodation yet . I know. So the city has no rooms left - what a surprise! and i was looking at the area of Post Falls and Spokane Valley. They still have lots of rooms for 100$ price range and it seems like it is only 40 minutes drive. So can anyone local/experienced advice if it is a good idea to stay there during the event.

thanks

Training is going better than last year, especially in the pool, knocked out 2150yds this morning. Last year, due to some imbalance issues in the water, I didn't hit that kind of distance until May!

How's yours going?

As to the travel, I live in the lower north side of Spokane, so even further, and had no issues getting there at a reasonable time.  I did have access to easy parking at a friend of a friends rental, which made that part easier.

The hotels in Post Falls are about a 10 minute drive to the race site.  Depending on where you're at in the Spokane Valley, it would be 20-30 minutes.  Either way, finding a place to park and walking will probably take longer than the drive.  There is very little traffic until you get off the Interstate and start entering downtown Cd'A.

I booked at the residence inn in Spokane Valley ($99/night).  I'm sure there will be a lot of people coming from that direction.  You can save about $100 a night staying there.

If you look back in the thread (I think page 11 and 12)  there is a good bit of talk about this.  I was in the same boat just a few weeks ago.

You do know you should have booked by now?

There are still rooms to be had.

So I'm not a huge bike guy, but I just wondered.  I'm running a 50-34 12/25 on my bike.  On the different forums in this world most people suggest using a 12/27.

Should I be shopping for an used 12/27 or is the 12/25 good enough for this bike course?

Oh and new montra for 2013 "I really like the pool."  Kind of...........

I ran a 50-34 12/25 in my last Ironman.  It was hilly but didn't have any long climbs.  I ran a 50-34 11-28 at IM Lake Placid and was glad I did.  Most people will say it will depend on how strong of a cyclist you are.  My thought is it's nice to have a bail out gear, you don't have to use it.

Hopefully someone who rode in last years new bike course can lend a hand. Currently I have stand 53/39 with 12/25 on my bike. I was thinking of going to 50/34 12/25 or like what you are saying 12/27.  I have heard that the hills on the second loop get to people so having an easier gear to spin up the hills on the second loop might not be a bad thing.

I did it last year.  Standard crank up front and a 12/25 on the rear and I was never hunting for another gear.  The hills aren't particularly steep, just long (and windy last year!).

How was everyone's training this past week?  Mine was quite good except for having to change up my long swim today due to the Y being packed this morning.

This was my first week of training but it started off good.  However, I started getting sick a few days ago and struggled though my past few workouts.  I was available to take advantage of unusually warm weather in Michigan and do my long bike outside on Saturday.  I saw as many cyclist out on Saturday as I sometimes do in July.

The Y's around here are always packed right after New Years.  It usually thins out over the next couple of months.

Yes but are you a good biker can grind up through the hills? I am more of a spinner type and like to have a cadence closer to 100 than 90.  I've ridden some pretty good hills with the same gearing you have and I wished I would of had more gears at times to spin more.

I didn't do a swim one day this last week thinking I would make it up over the weekend and of course I never got around to it. Lesson learned just do the swim I guess and be done with it instead of saying to do it again another day.

do you swim at the north y? I had thought to swim this morning but had other things going that prevented me from going in the morning.

Pretty happy with the way things are going - finished week #7 today and even though I've had to do a lot of juggling, I've only missed one 30-minute run, and that was during a recovery week.

I'm really liking this Fink Iron Fit plan.  At 30 weeks, it's longer than most, but I'm up to 10 hours a week without the slightest injury and don't feel fatigued at all - build phase starts in three weeks, things are gonna start getting tougher.

I've been feeling good.  I'm in week seven this week.  Should be a good week.

Swim fitness is good.

Run fitness is better than last year at this time, and bike fitness is hard to determine till I can get outside.  I wish I had a cross bike then I would have been outside saturday also.  Instead I did a brick on the trainer with a run in my shorts and a t-shirt.

Right now because of the build for the 15 mile snowshoe race I'm running more than normal, but that is ok.  I got to do a long slow 13.5 mile trail run on sunday and that felt good till this morning.  I'm a little sore.

Have a great week everyone.

Chris

I swim at the downtown Y at 5am during the week, it works well for my work schedule.  I have been up at the North Y, and think I may move my Sunday swims to there in hopes of it not being as crowded with it being a bigger pool.

Plus the North Y is a bit over 6 miles from my house the shortest route, so I could just start running home after my swim and just keep adding distance.

My training is going pretty good.  No skiing for 2 weeks means lots of time for s/b/r.   Running is slow but steady - and NOTHING HURTS!  Yay!  I think my broken heel issue is well behind me.   Trainer time on the weekends is up to 2 hrs and is not an issue at all.  Swim is just fine.  I did 11 hrs last week and overall, I feel good with energy left.

I just found this forum.  I am in for CDA.  Pretty excited as it will be my first full.  Training started for me last week as well and unfortunately looks like long rides will be indoors for awhile due to ice and snow.
