Sandlot!

Today is my off day, but I'll add abs!  Yesterday was a killer hot power yoga class with ridiculous ab workout, lots of inversions, and bound poses.  I'm exhausted and sore.  Definitely a challenge, and since my hip flexors have been inflexible bricks lately, I didn't feel very flexible, lol.

I have a swim and bike planned tomorrow and a run on Sunday.  And abs.

I have a 9.3 mile run and 2050 yard swim for Saturday plus a bridal shower and visits to Springfield to see my sister.  Sunday is a rest day!! YAHOO!  (except for those crazy ab workouts)

Sandlot!

Winner - winner, chicken dinner goes to Cara!  (I know that was almost another movie quote from "21"; just ironic, not trying to be funny)

Random factoid.  I went to the same school (MIT) as the people from the movie "21" was based on.  Started going the year after they were "busted."  Movie was semi-accurate, book was much more thorough and in-depth.  Vegas casinos now receive a copy of the school's picture catalog of students/teachers every year and upload them into their databases.  Makes me paranoid everytime I go to Vegas.

On topic- I have to do my Around the World workout tonight when I get home.  Should be interesting.

Weekend plans.....  Swim lesson Friday night...kicked my A$$.  Yoga Sat. morning with abs and easy elliptical for about 30-45 min afterward.  Sunday abs and for an added bonus I will be doing 200 pushups every time the Packers score a touchdown!  LOL....

To continue with the movie quotes.....  "I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.”

James - you are the man.  I can't survive much more than 45 on the 'dreadmill'.  Hat's off to you.  Must have been cold.  How is the ankle and sore mouth?

4.2 mile run, went off roading with daughter: pulled buddy out of creek and broke a stabilizer bar on daughter's jeep on some big rocks!  After a wash - got in a short ride on the bike; had to catch cycling team meeting for strategy planning.  Just got home; I am way over committed I think.....

"he's not happy unless he is doing 90 mph with his hair on fire"  -   name the movie

Hi all. Had quite the head cold since Friday. Woke up this morn feeling no better. But as the day wore on I began to feel better. Got in a 6 mile run before the Superbowl. I didn't eat too much and can you believe it... didn't even have a single drink.. Taste bids lacking and appetite not really there. Got in my first set of abs in a really long time. Wow. Weak. Decided to do the "around the world" that David posted the link too. Ouchie. Only one set @15 reps & 2 planks @ 30 sec .. 2nd plank was more like 15 sec..rest them 15 sec... But I'ma tryin'!!

Also any good info re: shin splints? Pretty sure I have them. (Ive never ever had them in the past). Took a week off from running. Then ran 2 mi on Thursday & 6 today. No pain while running but some "throbbing" or maybe one would call it a"jolt" of deep achiness here n there.

Quotes:  Can't place the bird one, though I know I've heard it.  The fire one I *believe* is Ghost Rider.

Abs: Hasn't been too bad as of yet.  Though I did forget to do my set yesterday (stupid Super Bowl and being out of town).  I'm going to do a set this morning (yesterday's set), then another set this afternoon (today's set).  Hoping not to make this a habit.

Shin splints:  Probably not the best advice, but I was taught that as long as you have the proper shoes and form, all you can do is run through them and heat/ice them afterwords.  After 2 weeks, they should go away.  I typically only get them when I haven't been running in a long time or when I'm starting to improve on my overall times (increased speed = increased pain?).

I have no insight on shin splints as I have luckily never had them. I will see what I can find out for you though.

Hope everyone had a good weekend of training and did not take too many steps backwards with all the SuperBowl party food they consumed!!!

Ran 8 Satruday

Bricked on Sunday (19 bike and 3.7 run)....in 30 degree weather. Not fun on the bike, but flet great to be out there.

Ate like crap for the Super Bowl....but with closed to 1500 calories burned prior...it's all good. Been focusing on eating better (mainly not snacking).

300 total crunches. I'm a little behind.

I have been real good about my "around the world" so far.  I started with 10 reps and have been adding one every day.  WOW! I didn't realize how weak my core was.  I definitely don't want to get behind.  I don't think I could do this twice in one day.

I ran 9.3 miles on Saturday but didn't get my swim in. UGH!  My daughter gets married in 1 month.  I hope to have a little more time for training once that is over.

Went for a 20 mi ride on Friday. When I went to top off my tires I saw that the front one was flat. I checked for obvious thorns on the outside & saw& felt mothing. So i went ahead & pumped it up & rode 20. Air held andstill felt hard after the ride. Should I just change the tube? Or just pump it up before each ride and hope itholds during the ride? Is this a restarted question? :|

Ok nevermind. Found a thorn. First time changing a road bike tire. Only took me 20 min. Haha. But luckily in my own backyard where cars aren't whizzing by!

changing a tire for the first time in a long time can be an experience! It gets easier the more you do it. I know a lot of people actually practice changing tubes as part of their training. I have never "practiced" before, but I do nto think it is a bad idea! Better to have it while training than to have it while racing!

I am so not looking forward to my ride tonight! **Inspires please, but no name calling (Brad)***

Quote Answer....... G.I. Jane........

Finally made it back to the gym today.   Had a great shoulder workout to get back in to the swing of things.

Tried to ride my bike on Saturday, made it about a mile and had to walk it back.  Not quite ready for that yet

Also tried to run today, but made it about half a mile and had to stop.  Looks like it will be longer than a week to recover.  I sure hate it when Dr.s are right about recovery time.

Many thanks for the tips on brick workouts. I bought myself some tri shorts and it made all the difference. I ran this time with a thicker soled shoe and had very little calf cramp. I really don't like running on a thick soled shoe, but it seemed to do the trick for this workout. Any suggestions on tri shoes? Also, I'm looking for a good tri watch that can count swim laps nad running mileage, but I don't have enough money to buy a garmin.Recommendations?Renee

recovery time can be very important, if you comeback to early, you will never get over it!  Take the time, to recover!!!

As far as tri shoes, that would really depend on your budget. I wear Shimano's and like them alot.

As far as watches, if you are looking for a GPS watch (which would need to be waterproof to swim) then you will be looking at a couple hundred dollars, unless you fins a good deal on eBay or Craigslist. If you are just looking for a lap timer, then any Timex watch will work, but it might not tell mileage.

i use the Timex Global Trainer and lover it. It has HR, mileage, pace, can be worn swimming and a lot of other features I am still earning, and it only cost me about $200

Prob the most important question :

the movie quote from page 13:  still out there - Ghostrider and GI Jane are not correct. The quote is on page 13.  Hint:  The movie made Kenny Loggins a ton of money with the soundtrack.  And a second quote, "take me home or lose me forever" - Meg Ryan.

Brad, James and Stuart:  thinking of doing an X50 about 4-5 weeks before I do my 70.3.  Your thoughts?   I am thinking of not racing it (maybe), but using that as my test before I attack my 70.3  What are you thoughts on those two being so close together?  To me it sounds smart.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THIS!!!!  I had an ACL Reconstruction done 4 years ago.  It was frustrating as hell to go through the LONG recovery (5-6 months before the all clear), but COMPLETELY worth it.  I was able to go hiking in the Andes Mountains of Peru around Machu Picchu within 7 months of my surgery.  If I had not followed their recovery/therapy plan, I might still be dealing with issues from the surgery.  Also, my mom has had both knees replaced, a hip replaced, and just had one of her shoulders replaced (We joke around and call her the Million Dollar Lady Laughing).  She swears by doing EXACTLY what the doctor/physical therapist say around recovery.  She has always done exactly as the doctor/therapist say and has NEVER had a single long term issue from any of those procedures.

TAKE YOUR TIME, DO EXACTLY WHAT THE DOCTOR/THERAPIST TELL YOU TO DO!!!  You'll be MUCH more grateful to have MANY years of triathlons instead of pushing, causing issues, and potentially not having any more years of triathlons.
