Today is going to be a dry run through everything for Saturday:  race gear, transition set up (plus some security measures like locking the bike), ~ 600M wetsuit OWS, T1, execute first 6-8 miles of bike race plan, T2, execute first mile of run race plan, CD.  Weather permitting...looking a little sketchy right now with some thunderstorms around.  If I have to bag it...I'll just try to run through the whole mess indoors.

This went pretty well, other than I forgot my bike shoes and had to drive back home halfway to the "race" site.  <facepalm>

Swim:  ~700y @ 1:49/100 pace
T1:  4:08 - this was about 100y run uphill to the car, and I had to unlock my bike which took about an entire minute.  Wetsuit removal was OK.
Bike:  ~0.5m build to race pace, 5.5m @ 21mph
T2:  2:00 - again dealing with the bike lock
Run:  0.5m @ race pace out of T2, then run back for the CD

It's is absolutely startling how different it is swimming with a wetsuit.  I have one of the cheapo Promotion sleeveless ones and I feel like the I just need to churn my arms and swim straight; without it I have to worry about forcing my head down, pulling my legs up, etc.  I'm guessing north of :12/100y improvement.

Thats no joke I swam in mine for the first time last weekend and was amazed at how much easier it seemed

PSA of the day: Protect your skin! Visited the dermatologist today. While I wear sunscreen and hats religiously now, I didn't for most of my childhood and 20s. Had to.freeze a few things on my face, and once tri season is over and I'm not in the sun for hours each day, she wants me to.use chemotherapy cream for a.few weeks.

So...no swimming for a.few.days.

Also, my bike is part of the Felt recall. In fact, there were some small.cracks in the recalled part. I now have to wait for Felt to sent a replacement fork. Shop says 10 days.

So no riding for the time being.

Which means I run. My Achilles heel.

Bummer about the spots you had to freeze. I am one moley dude and I spend a lot of time checking moles for bad stuff. I had more than a couple blistering burns in my younger years too.

Today was a nice swim and a great run: 12 minutes or so warm up, 8 x 1/4 mile (on the track) all under 90 seconds with 200 meters easy recovery. The last couple got very hard. I did not pace this well. Lesson learned. Even pacing them would be much easier instead of going out like a house on fire and then struggling to maintain toward the end. Regardless, I feel like I got in a nice workout and did a little over nine miles total running today. Schwing!

Very good advice.  I had more than a few burns as a kid and was one of those crazy girls who "tanned" with SPF 0 Native Tan.

Focusing on one sport for a period of time can be great, especially if it is one you normally don't want to work on.  I no longer call that sport a "weakness" by the way.  You might be surprised what can happen when it's the only thing you can do.  Embrace the RUN!

Funny you should bring this up.

I am currently in discussions for a single-sport bike focus. The bike would not be my choice if I was picking a discipline to focus on for pleasure, but if I want to get faster it may be necessary. We will have to see where this goes.....

Regarding the bike, on Tuesday I rode for the first time in eight days. It was amazing to me how uncomfortable the seat was for an hour and 20 minute ride after a week off. My undercarriage calluses must have gotten soft. TMI, I'm sure. Back on the bike again tonight.

Heal up quick.
Thanks for the heads up.
I grew up on the Jersey Shore (FIST PUMP) and it was routine to get at least a few bad burns every summer.

This is the first week of the season that I will train in all three disciplines.
Now I remember what it feels like to be tired, and I haven't even come close to meeting my quotas for the week yet.

Ride after a swim this evening if work lets me.
It seems I always get an emergency call when I plan on having a good workout.

Four days until my race...starting to bounce off the walls a bit.  Took my bike in for service and needed a new chain and desperately needed new bar tape.  It'll look snappy for my race Saturday!

I think we're going to be 50/50 on wetsuit-legal; it got really warm here yesterday and today and the buoy temps near there jumped 5 degrees since Saturday.  I'd prefer a wetsuit but I'm prepared to go without.

Good Luck on Saturday.  Sounds like you're ready for it!

Originally posted by PaulPerger In keeping with the mantra, "Nothing new on race day", I started swimming with a cap on today. I almost didn't do it because my hair is between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch long, I don't need a cap for any reason other than the two races I am signed up for require me to wear one they provide. Boy am I glad I did. The first few laps were really weird. I am used to feeling the water on the top of my head. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but it really did feel completely different! I had to stop twice to adjust my goggles which didn't fit me the same way with a cap on. I bought another one because I heard it is a good idea to wear one you are used to wearing, then your goggles, then the "race cap". So, I am going to practice wearing two. (After I get used to wearing one!) Speaking of this, why do races require everyone to wear the same cap? Surely there is some good reason for this, but I haven't been able to figure that one out...

Cap in a race (particularly OWS race) is a safety factor.  Much easier to see the swimmers when they have a brightly colored object on the top of their head.  Also, as someone else mentioned, races of different lengths will use different color caps to identify which distance you're swimming, and the other reason is to identify waves.   Having played Race Director myself, it really helps the lifeguards on the rafts and the officials keep everyone in line.

Other benefit is hair that is normal in color after a lot of pool time.... lol

Good luck to everyone with a race the weekend.  I'm looking to see some epic performances.

As for me, I'm churning out the miles to meet my training goals for the month.   Already passed my run goal.  One more swim and a 20 mile bike ride and I'll meet those two goals.

Run pace this morning was slightly slower than yesterday, but felt much more solid.  Wasn't dying by the time I hit mile 3.    I love seeing progress.   I'm just not very patient and want it to come faster!

Looks like we have several folks racing this weekend: Mike, Jamie at Raleigh 70.3, me....any others?

I'm looking forward to my race Saturday. Its really the only time my family is there for my races and my son, age 20, is doing a relay so we will get to race together. His relay should take the relay title and possibly the fastest time of the day. My son is doing the swim and run legs and the owner of the LBS is doing the bike leg. They will be strong across all three disciplines. Pretty much my whole team will be doing the race so that always adds to the fun.

Someone had mentioned nerves before a race within the last few days. I still get nervous. I've done somewhere in the range of 33-35 triathlons and figure those nerves/butterflies will never go away. The severity seems to increase with the importance of the race.......I can't imagine how nervous/anxious I would be if I ever did an IM!

Single sport focus? It can really push you to a new level. I think its easier to do with swimming and biking as the body recovers quicker from those activities and there is less chance of injury ramping those up. I was pretty swim/bike focused early in the year as my running was limited. Saw nice gains on the bike and marginal gains on the swim. But, with the swim I did build some endurance that allowed me to swim faster paces for longer distances. Downside is that I am going through a phase now where I'm tired of swimming (230,000 yards so far in 2014). Maybe a couple of easier weeks will help.

Funny you mention you think you would be more nervous for an IM.  I get some nerves before races (the HM last weekend was worse than usual for some reason) but as I stood on the beach in Mont Tremblant, I was 100% calm and at ease.  I've been pretty much the same for both HIMs although maybe not quite to the same extent.  For me it seems to be related to the length of the race - shorter = worse!

That makes complete sense. I knew there had to be a good reason for it. I had figured that bright colors make it easier to see swimmers (i.e. bright easier to see than black), but hadn't thought about the waves or distance differences.

Thanks! I am now smarter than I was this morning.

I always thought the bright colored cap was to make it easier to find me on the bottom of the lake. As far as the wetsuit goes, I think may be the single greatest invention known to man. Yes I know it's a crutch but it is rare you will find me OWS without it. I even did a non-wetsuit race with it on. I was told I could wear it but wasn't eligible for any prizes. Yeah right, let me know when you pay 30th AG and 70th OA.

I don't usually get nervous before races. Other than the 1st couple I did which was probably more the fear of the unknown. It seems a little odd due to the fact that before I developed my triathlon addiction one of my other hobbies was umpiring youth baseball. I did some pretty high level games and always had some serious nerves before the game. I was fortunate enough to be behind the plate for a regional final on ESPN. Damn near puked on the catcher at the start of that one. Something about TV cameras pointed at you no matter which you turn is very unsettling. I guess it is just my introverted personality but I could never quite get used to being center stage. I was always fine once the game started but I can remember having rubber legs during many national anthems. Don't get me wrong it was a great experience and I wouldn't change it for the world, just very nerve wracking.

My first couple of races I was nervous nothing major but still. Then when I did my first HM I was a ball of nerves right up to the start of it. Then all was fine. I have my first Oly distance coming up in a month and a half and already I am nervous about it

Woo hoo! Catching up! Had an awesome Memorial Day weekend. Saturday I rested for a Sunday morning mountain bike session with some friends, then played some indoor soccer. Monday we had a BBQ at the beach with friends and family. Training buddies and I got in an open water swim and were treated to two sea turtle sightings. So awesome!

Tomorrow, Saturday, I'm participating in a Coast Guard Memorial Run that will include some obstacles. NO idea what to expected, but I'll be taking it easy. Don't need anymore injuries. Sunday is the Cocos Crossing! 2.5 mile swim from Cocos to Guam. Looking forward to that. It will be one of my training buddy's first time.

Chris, so sorry to hear about the rough week! One day at a time. Hang in there!

Nathan, babies on the way are so exciting!

Suzy, you brave soul! That sounds freezing!

Nancy, yay for summer! Terrible thing to happen to your friend. I replaced my last helmet after a crash that dented it with a Scott brand. Expensive, but I'm not really sure how it's better than the last. I should read up on it! I am getting irritated with my Garmin HR strap. It's slippery and fits weird. I have to have it snug around my ribcage, but then I get the chafing. Body Glide only works for a few hours. Then a couple times this week the reading was off by at least 200 cals! It's fine now, but I'm afraid it's going to happen again. I'm going to research a better strap.

Arend, sorry you didn't get the 1/2 result you wanted, but that's a pretty darn good time, too!

Jason, hope your break was refreshing!

Rene, excellent work!! You're an animal! Pain? Hmm.. I have felt burning! There are a few hills on our MTB courses that set my lungs and quads aflame!

Paul, in our local, no frills triathlons you don't have to wear a swim cap, but for Championship races, and for the distance swim this weekend we have to wear them. One of the reasons is to differentiate pros from AGers, and they are also used to wave down help if you need it.

I've never tried swimming in a wetsuit! I want to, but they're not allowed here.

We definitely have to be very careful out here with our skin. The sun punishes.

TGIF!!! Good luck to the racers. Enjoy your weekend, and happy training!

Well, that was a self fulfilling prophecy.
Always when I have plans the Bat Phone rings.

Quick bike last night on the trainer.
A bunch of running and riding today and Saturday to get in the quotas and some swim on Sunday.

Skipping my first planned race and perhaps doing a different one later in June.
So now my first race will be 6/9 and then 6/21.
    A 5K and 10K trail run.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.

Tri clubs offer all of us, from beginner to advanced athlete, a venue in which we can realign our perspective of what “fast” and “far” are, pushing us to new and greater heights of performance.
