OMG...what a small world we live in. While Helen and I ran the same race, it was unfortunate that we were unable to meet up....but here is where it gets funny...she just sent me an inspire indicating that the great gal that I ran about 12K with, is actually a friend of hers and they travelled to and from the race together!!!!! Craziness!

I am really busy trying to get myself ready for my trips so will not be around much!

have a great April fools/Hump day! TRAIN WELL! Keep focused on your goals!

Just heard a great April Fools joke from a little kid interviewed on the radio...he replaced the cream in an oreo cookie with toothpaste! Ugh- can you imagine biting into that one?!!  Guessing he had fun licking all the cream out of the cookies though.

I think they do this to help round up those that didn't respond earlier or have recently come to BT. We should be good for as long as we want to be a group.

Ok all...... I need input /help/ideas/you name it, I need it !!!!!

I do not balance well at all in the pool.  I tried the drill where you put one hand out straight and lean your head on it........swim on your side and turn your head up to breathe. My friend watched me and she said "you sink"........ I do not know why, but you sink.  I would turn my head to breathe and be under the water so far I'd take in water in my nose (why I am sick now I think). my legs did not sink , it was my entire torso and head !

I do not know how to correct my balance.  I saw myself on video again from our last class (you can see the horror at www.rubberduckyswimclub.blogspot.com   I swim last in that video......... and I literally hang my head low in an attempt to push my chest down into the water.  I thought I'd made progress and done so much better fixing how I swim, but wow..........not it just looks bad in a different way. LOL

I will ask my friend for her swim coach's name......... but I kinda worry that I am that girl who no matter what someone else tries to show me.....i will not be able to do it.  I could not do any of the drills that my friend did so easily, I was embarrassed at my lack of progress and she was SO patient ! She stayed 1/2 hour after our swim was over and worked with me........i still could not do it.

My balance is horrible !  I blame my huge boobs !!!!!!     so other than a boob reduction ....... I'll take any ideas and seriously, that adult sized rubber ducky floatie.........NOT A BAD IDEA !!!!

Here's what I'm seeing, Julie. (Was that the cell phone video? It was pretty good, considering.)

You're pushing the water out to the sides with your pull making your shoulders swing side to side and sort of sink like a falling leaf (swish! swish! swish!). Your pull should be very slightly S-shaped, starting at about 12:30 (right) and 11:30 (left). Your hands should enter the water at a 45 degree angle to horizontal (or vertical, if you prefer), palms to the outside, then skull outward to shoulder width, no more! Call it 1:00 (right) and 11:00 (left). Your hands are skulling to about 2:30 and 9:30! As you're skulling outward, bend your elbow to 90 degrees. This will help flip your hand 180 degrees to skull back inward and diagonally to your centerline, and, at the same time drive down at least deep enough to get out of your body's slipstream (that varies depending on how fast you're going, but your elbow should never be straighter than about 120 degrees or so during the underwater pull). When your hands get to the deepest part of the stroke, directly underneath your body, flip back toward the outside and push up and back past your thigh. Try to make your thumb brush your outer thigh on each stroke. You want to start turning your head to breath as your hand flips from the outward skull to the inward skull. Your shoulder will drop and your head will be fully turned just as you hit the deepest part of the stroke, which will help drive your shoulder (and head) UP out of the water so you don't get so much water. Then, quickly, turn your face back to center so your arm can recover efficiently. The way you're doing it now, you're pushing your face sideways straight into the wall of water while you're sinking. Tough way to breathe!

As you can imagine, one-arm drills will help you figure out how this should feel! Paddles will also help you get a feel for it, but I'd recommend flippers, or zoomers at least. Paddles can really do a number on your shoulders if you overdo it. Also, practice the motion in the air a lot. When I was an age-grouper, we had to lay on our stomachs on a weight bench and do endless "air drills". But, I have good technique, so I guess it works!

Here's some video of how it should look:

Michael Phelps (he has a natural catch-up stroke, very efficient, but not pretty)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax77_hHq9Dc&feature=related

Ian Thorpe (also a natural catch-up stroke, but he keeps his head pointed too much forward, which is why Michael Phelps beat him in the end!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mm-vSqlWmgs&feature=related

Above all, keep working at it. It will seem to take forever and probably feel worse than it does now for some time. Swimming is unnatural for humans, so I guess that makes all of us swimmers super-human! And, of course, YOU are a swimmer (and a triathlete)!

Yeah, that slicing advice is actually a little old-fashioned. I think a lot of people naturally put their hands in too wide, which upsets the stroke right from go; and trying to slice in will help you overcome that particular fault. But you don't want to take it too far because you can end up entering the water too early and impeding your forward momentum.

I guess the word for the day is BALANCE! In every sense. It's interesting to note when you watch the videos how un-balanced these great swimmers are from one side to the other. They do completely different things with each side of their bodies, but their torsos are like torpedos - straight, stiff and totally focused on forward.

First ride on my "real bike".  It's not perfect, but it will do. I think it will really hurt my elbow to be on a mtn bike though.  the pressure that is on it to hold yourself up.....wow it is achey now !

I put on my helmet, it feels strange.  Bundled up (hhmmmmm 76 degrees and my ears were still cold ).  I went about 2 miles, tried to get used to gears some.  I can tell that I am more comfy on a hill standing, when we are in spin class we stand at least 1/2 hour of the time.  I am just used to it, however not on a bike that will wobble and fall over ! lol

So I did quite a few hills around here that are on my normal run route (well one of the two).  I made it up all of them ! PHEW.......

So I rode about 20 minutes, some just around the house and then some on that route...... the bike is not perfect, but it will do.  I may have them put on the fabric type cages so that I can do more than push down on the pedal.......... but i've never looked into that .

Julie,

I had horrible problems with my elbows when I first started riding a bike again! It's definitely a stresspoint.

Two things - adjust the handlebars so they are as high as they can possibly go. If they can't go any higher, I'd recommend those extender handle thingy's everyone's using now to convert from MTB to cruiser. They come as clip-ons and look sort of like little cattle horns sticking up off the handlebar. More places to change your grip will help a lot.

Second thing - you might try lowering your saddle just a half centimeter or even a whole centimeter. That little bit probably won't make much difference to your knees, but may save your arms! Leaning is all about having those hips too high and hands too low. MTB fitting should be saddle low anyway so you can get your bum up on the bumps!

Ride! Ride! Ride! to strengthen your arms and improve your handling so you can relax your grip!

Have fun,
Trish

I broke my weight loss barrier!!!!

I'm officially in the 180s baby!!!!

I woke up this morning to try out housemate's new scale. 187.0. Really? 187? Really? Really?

I thought I would cry or something, but I was a little in disbelief. At the Y, it was 189. And then at Weight WAtchers tonight, it was 189.8, so the three scales confirm it!

(I've *never* been below 192 as an adult, and I'm now around the weight I was in 7th grade. My highest was 270. Dieters on another forum call what I experienced the Bermuda Triangle of weight loss.)

And now, I'm 2 pounds away from my Weight Watchers 10% goal -AND- from no longer being classified as "obese" but merely as "overweight." (I was "morbidly obese.")

And, it's like ... there are all these new and exciting changes emerging, but also a little trepidation.

So, first the exciting changes. I tucked in my undershirt this morning, and I LOOKED GOOD. I mean, I looked hawt. I could totally see myself actually tucking in a shirt for the first time in my life. My PF pain is better. My thighs are getting so much smaller. All of my pants are loose again, except the fake Size 10s. My body is literally shrinking a lot!

It's like, holy cow, I'm not fat!

The trepeditation. I guess I'm like, "OK, so I made my goal that I've been striving for forever. Now what?" And I know the answer is to just keep doing what I'm doing and not sweat it too much. I set a goal to weigh 175 by July 26 of this year. And, I could then strive for another 10% at WW, which would get me under 170. And then, who knows? I guess I'll just keep eating healthy, and whereever I stop losing weight is probably where I'll declare goal.

Also, I know Easter is coming up, and I am worried that if I eat anything real starchy - like a gluten-free cake - that I will eat out of control. And I'd like to get past that, but I also don't want to eat 5 pieces of gluten-free chocolate cake. Maybe I'll take a ton of fresh fruit and have some chocolate - regular chocolate, not cake - instead. I think I'd be in better control of that.

Anyhow, it was an AWESOME day for me!

Edited for dumb typo. (As opposed to a smart typo.)

Also, it will be the first holiday I've seen my family since last Easter, because of the issues with my soon-to-be-ex-husband and my brother and some stuff around there. I don't think the extended family, other than my grandmother, know that I'm getting divorced.

So, there will be a LOT of stress on that day for me. But, then again, better than being alone with STBX and missing my family.

Morning...

hope everyone has a NON eventful April fools day! no pranks!

OOOOH I've got to remember that one so i can use it to get back at my kids next time they do a prank on me...thanks for the tip
