1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by chayes Now for me time: rented a house with a bunch of friends in the Finger Lakes last week. First 4 days were beautiful, and I did lots of kayaking and a couple of swims in the lake- considering I haven't swum since last summer, they weren't too bad. But on the 5th day it hurt to lift my arms, LOL. I hope it was from the kayaking and not the swimming. Planning to do a sprint (with a longer run) in my hometown at the end of the month, and I definitely need to get to the pool. City pools open this weekend so it will be easier. I would like to do the head-to-head weight loss challenge if anyone else is into it. And how bout them Pirates? The Finger Lakes region is so lovely. Wine country out there too! There's a nice marathon/half marathon out that way where the medal you get is a flattened wine bottle bottom! It's a flat to downhill course, point to point. I haven't done it but some friends used it to qualify for Boston. I'd love to check it out sometime. |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Okay, had a nice bike yesterday - 48.3 miles (I was tempted to ride around the block to bring it to 50 LOL). I stopped at mile 38 just to let my hubby know where I was on the ride and when I'd be home (son had a soccer game at noon, hubby coaches it and I knew he'd be wanting to know I'd be back in plenty of time to go). We ended up chatting for 10 minutes so my time got a bit off. LOL. It was a good ride, had 2 GU's and just a few Sportbeans. I still don't drink enough water when I ride. Argh. I'm looking at aerobottles but I have Jammer GT clip-ons and a narrow handlebar already so I'm having a tough time finding one that fits. My backside was getting a little numb so I did a fair amount of standing and coasting. I also unclipped my left foot occasionally to shake it out - numb toes - not cold related. (I think at this point it's shoe related as I've done the fitting thing and tried multiple seats) With the new seat I have found it is quite comfortable in the aero position (less so in a standard road bike sitting position). My butt also needs some time in saddle to get used to it too. It was 40 degrees F when I started. Brrrrrrr..... I don't have toe covers for my bike shoes so I ended up putting toe warmers on top of my feet in the shoes - worked well. Next time I'll consider either a plastic baggie over my feet in the shoes or duct tape over the vents/mesh. Or....I could just buy some stinking toe covers. LOL Last fall I rode when it was 49 F and my feet were blue when I got done - zero feeling, stumps. Painful. Live and learn! Rest day today (good - it's pouring out!). Looks like S/B on T, W and B/R on Th, rest Fri and another 3 hour ride on Saturday with a recovery run after. That will be tough as we head to camp - the hills are amazing over there (but the roads are a little scary to ride - very narrow, little shoulder and constant twists and dips) - ride very early or don't ride! I'll brave the cold lake temps and get my first ows in then. Cheers! Edited by aviatrix802 2015-06-08 8:17 AM |

Inhaled tons of water, check. Bruised forearm from the lane divider, check. Split a finger open doing backstroke and striking the pool filter drain, check. Them tonight I crashed forehead first into the wall. No, I have zero idea how I managed this while doing crawl, you'd think a hand would hit first. Icing my head now. Drinking prior to swimming.... not advised Heal up quick! Oh no! I am glad you are okay! I definitely got a giggle from the mental image. |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by aviatrix802 Originally posted by firebert Jenn - I had a Switchback Ale last night!!! the wife and daughter took me out to dinner for my birthday, the place had a decent row of taps, and sure enough the last one the waiter rattled off was 'Switch, or ship, something-back from Vermont'. LOL. It was perfect - little sweet, little bite, little citrus, and totally delicious cold. Perfect! A Switchback on your birthday is about the best thing ever! Did you have the regular Switchback Ale or their summer Switchback Citra Pils? That one is a nice, sort of lighter beer with just a hint of citrus - a good hot summer day beer. Regular Switchback Ale. The waiter even brought me the tap handle from the bar. We were one of like two tables occupied in the whole restaurant that night Beer Update Not only did I have a brew day yesterday (imperial blonde ale), my friends surprised me with a birthday gift - Heady Topper. Had my first last night and I have more in the fridge! I am a very lucky man. Jenn I know you were asking Dave about Pliny, but I just recently learned all this. Being an east coast guy I know way more about unobtainable Vermont beers than I do unobtainable California beers, but I was in SF for work a few weeks back and got to try the Pliny the Elder. Elder is the double IPA that, while limited, they brew year round. Pliny the Younger is the Triple IPA that they do once a year, have a big party for the release of, and it sells completely out within 30 minutes. Elder was absolutely delicious. BTW if anyone likes to brew, the Northern Brewer Pliny the Elder clone (Plinian Legacy) is absolutely spot on. Edited by firebert 2015-06-08 11:02 AM |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Dave O Great race report! Congrats on completing your first and so happy you had a good time and decided to go for the Oly later in the summer. I hope I have the same type of experience with mine, also a local YMCA Sprint. Ours is much more popular though, there will probably be more people in my AG than that. And mine too - no closed roads for bike or run. And last year, the officer directing traffic held a pack of runners for a couple minutes while waving cars through, the way they would at a construction site with one lane closed... Agh - I hope that doesn't happen to me. Though, since it will be my first, no matter my time it will be a PR right? gear Devon - congrats on the score on the 910! The wife just picked up the 920xt, and so handed me down her one year old Polar (I think it's an RCX5) for my birthday. Haven't fired it up yet but I'll get it connected and in use soon. |

2108 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business My first ice bath ever was when I sprained my ankle playing basketball and they made me put my whole foot in a bucket of ice. I passed out b/c the temperature changed shocked my system. Luckily I was sitting down! Now I LOVE ice baths. Super weird I know. We did them in college after really hard track workouts and it was the greatest thing in the world. I actually loved that feeling of putting your legs in the water at first bc I knew it would get numb and I would recover so much faster (and I no longer pass out). Granted, all we put in were our legs...higher than that would just be torture. |

Regarding running I can find my way for great runs in the area, but beer wise I need you expert advice... Thanks! Juan Here's what Beer Advocate has for places to go for beer in Chicago: http://www.beeradvocate.com/place/city/6/ the most legendary of the bunch is Goose Island, though they are now owned by a large American Brewery. If you like stouts, their line of barrel aged stouts are of particular interest and there are so many of them that some would have to be available in the city of Chicago. Local enough and large enough that you might see beers from them are Bell's (Michigan) - they probably won't have Hopslam (double IPA) but you should be able to find the Two Hearted IPA that Dave Q and I rave about. Founders is in Grand Rapids Michigan and is large enough to distribute to me on the east coast so should definitely be found in Chicago. Any of their limited release stuff is legendary, not sure what is seasonal limited release for spring though. Outside chance breweries: Dark Horse Brewing Company (Michigan) Three Floyds as Devon mentioned (Indiana) Toppling Goliath (Iowa) Surly Brewing Company (Minnesota) I've never been to Chicago, or really spent any time in the Midwestern US, but the Midwest is one of the havens of craft beer brewing in the US. Also Vermont (with some runoff into the rest of New England), California is HUGE, and Oregon. The rest of the country has upstarts all over the place, there are hundreds of new small breweries popping up every year. It's a great time to be a beer nerd! |

I had my first Bells Two Hearted IPA on draft visiting a friends house on Saturday. I had to stop at one due to the race on Sunday, but I didn't want to. I'm not a huge fan of hoppy beers, but this one was good. It packs a little punch too. I say go track down while in Chicago. |

Will keep you posted. Juan My suggestions: Goose Island Sofie (can't miss) and Lolita (very good). Goose IPA is also tasty! Is you can get your hands on any beers from Deschutes (from the West Coast) - go for it. One last thing - be sure to try the Pizza. Go to Pizzaria Uno's downtown for an experience you will remember for a lifetime! |

Not sure which was better - taking it home to New Jersey to post pictures on facebook, or Magic Hat - HAHA! Dave that homebrew with the simcoe and the liberty - sounds fantastic! Jon - When I get back from Michigan in August - we should brew a BDAS beer and ship it out. Might be a fun project and a way to get away from our fams for a nice quiet afternoon! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Originally posted by Snewo Race Report In case you don't remember my master plan, here it is. My goal tri is in August. I signed up for my local YMCA triathlon as a way for me to guage my progress. I also needed a way for me to determine whether I should sign up for the Sprint or the Oly in August. If I had trouble doing today's "practice" tri then I would go Sprint in August. Today's sprint was through my YMCA. 500Yards in the pool; 12.4 mile bike; 3.1 mile run. The weather was perfect. This tri is called the "Average Joe/Joan" and is exactly that. This is an entry to the entry level races. They normally have around 40 people in the race, but due to other competition from races on the same weekend, there were only 22 today. As I said it's a small intro to triathlon race. Swim It was started in waves with 2 people per lane. I started nice and smooth instead of blasting out of the gate like my lane partner. I passed him 3 laps later. I've been doing 2 minute 100's in practice, but today I had a little bit of adrenaline. I popped out of the pool at 9:10 T1 + Bike They didn't calculate transition times, they just baked it into the next section of the race. I didn't do anything too crazy here. I did bike and run with socks. I had them rolled up sitting in my bike shoes. Even though I don't have clip pedals, I decided against wearing the Hoka's on the bike ride since they would absorb some of my stroke. I went with a pair that gave me a better feel for the bike. I drove the bike course Saturday, so I knew what I was doing, that helped. It also helped me to be prepared for just how many potholes I was going to see. It was quite a few. The roads don't close down for a 22 person triathlon, so I was sharing the road with cars. I've explained that i don't feel comfortable riding on the small roads around me during practice, but when it's race day that all goes away. On a personal note, I'm just glad that My Fitness Pal classified my ride as "vigorous" instead of my normal "moderate". I rolled up to T2 at: 1:00:48 That's a 51:38 ride with T1 included. T2 + Run I just changed shoes here and dropped off anything I had in the back pocket of my BDAS jersey. Anything bouncing around back there would have annoyed me. I made sure to do the newbie mistake of taking off to run with my helmet on, even though I read MULTIPLE times to not do that. I suspect that it's one of those "everyone does it once" things. I lost maybe 10 seconds. The run wasn't posted yesterday, so I couldn't drive it. I had to rely on my ability to follow the markings on the ground. For the most part they were good. I had some concerns during the run that I went the wrong way, but I trusted my ability to follow markings and kept plugging away. Luckily I was right. I ran across the finish line with a: 1:30:47. That's a 29:59 5K with T2 included. Overall feeling I passed a few folks, and everyone was really encouraging (I tried to be as well). This had a different feel than my organized runs. This felt a little bit more like a close knit community (I don't know if that's YMCA people or triathlon people). There were a few people there that have already run my target Tri, so I was able to pick people's brains. With everyone's help in here, I can say that I have trained properly to do this race. I have no after effects and I expect none. Soooo... 1. I'm now officially a triathlete 2. I'm happy with my performance; Everything felt good. 3. This race was to determine whether I do a Sprint or Oly in August. I plan on signing up for the Oly tonight. Thanks again for keeping me honest everyone. I don't have any pics, but I DID wear the BDAS jersey. Once the YMCA posts their pictures I'll find the one where I look the most handsome and post it in here. Congrats to you Dave O. It sounds like your first race (OF MANY) was a great one and I am so proud of you. You put in a lot of hard work and it paid off! The one thing you forgot to do was mention your post race beer reward. Come on man - the masses want to know. What did you wash down that taste of victory with? |

Two quick thoughts on the cold feet - wear a hat which will raise your body temp a bit all the way to your extremities. I know it doesn't sound like much but it has helped me and is easy to take off when you get too warm. I also sometimes where a pair of wool socks instead and that helps too. I'm sure you have tried this - but as someone who has gotten frost bite from riding outside - I can sympathize. Warm temps are on their way! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Just checking in... I finally feel like I'm back. So often in the last 6 months I've felt more like a fat @55 who has run an IM than an IM who is fat.... Luckily - in the last three weeks, I've finally started to hit my grove. Yesterday I came home after a rough day at work (what else is new) and thought about just crashing on the couch - but that little voice, the one that's been AWOL since IMMT whispered in my ear that Coors lite doesn't taste very good and that I should get my butt to the pool. I've missed that voice! Today - I had a strong swim session where I swam 1500 and did 16 50 yard repeats all under a minute. I had to push - but it felt good! Tonight, I'm heading out for a ride so I can end my wife's year end faculty party. On a personal note - 4 more days at work - 2.5 with kids. This has been the toughest year of my life and it's almost over! I feel like I dropped the ball on the weight loss competition for the month. I'd love to get that going in July - or figure out how to do something on a weekly basis. Maybe a weekly contest where the winner gets to post a brag in their signature for all to see... I myself have lost 8 pounds and am hoping to leave the 220's behind this weekend! Have a great one everyone! |
