Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mcluvin22 - 2010-04-22 11:03 PM As of right now I am thinking about going up the weekend of June 25th, but I haven't gotten around to calling hotels to get a room. Art Devlins is great and as inexpensive as you're going to find. And as Cuse said, get on the waiting list, stuff does open up. I just got in for June 17-20 a few weeks ago. There will be a couple of us up there then. Marvarnett, Jazz, Yeats....we're all going for Jorge's camp. I'd love to get up there for another weekend as well but not sure it's going to happen. Memorial Day weekend would be ideal b/c of the extra day. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm going up in 3 weeks! We're staying at Whiteface Lodge thanks to a connection my BF has, should be a treat. I stayed at Northwoods in late October and am staying there for the race as well. It was pretty cheap and great location. I'm also going for Memorial Day and am at Northwoods then. |

I'll either make it just a ride and run or book a hotel with a decent enough pool to get a swim in beforehand. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() thelunchbox - 2010-04-22 7:31 PM I may be doing something similar on a random weekday in Early June as I'm on vacation. Put the kids to bed and start the 4-5 hour drive up, then crash on an air mattress in the back of the minivan. Wake up whenever and start the ride, then head home when I finish. I'll probably bring the wetsuit for a dip in Mirror Lake and run a loop of the course. Don't know if I'd do two bike loops or make my own Lake Placid Half Ironman out of the day. The Odyssey may end up stinkin' real bad, but it would be hard core and good prep. That just came out stream of consciousness, but the half iron seems like divine inspiration to me! Gonna seriously work on making this happen. Although it can be nice to ride the course, it's really not that crucial. Doing all of this in June is getting a little close to the actual race and could have an impact on your training before and after, which is going to be some key sessions. If it were me, I would stay home and continue to get the same quality s/b/r training. |

Plus, its only a 3-4 hour drive for me......plus its part of the experience...... Edited by cusetri 2010-04-23 8:10 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm going up weekend 18-20 June. My excuse to my hubby is to leave him home with his two sons for a boys fathers day weekend! This is a planned training weekend from my coach and there's a group of us going up with her. It would be great to meet up with some BTers at some stage though, even if just for a quick drink! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WittyCityGirl and I will be up there the weekend of June 11 for a free (free!) training camp. We're actually sort of doing our own thing AND doing the free training camp where it fits in. I love the idea of going up there and riding the course. There's gonna be enough stuff to think about on race day, that knowing the course and knowing I've ridden it before is just going to be one less thing. Plus, I agree with Cuse...just part of the experience. ![]() In fact, right now, I think I might actually be a teeny tiny bit more excited about the training weekend than the race. Uh, only 'cuz it's like, RIGHT around the corner and we still have a WHOLE (gulp) 3 months before the cannon goes off. I believe we're gonna be roughing it, too--staying at a campground somewhere. You know, you gotta save your money for drinking eating on these training weekends. ![]() |

If it were me, I would stay home and continue to get the same quality s/b/r training. Living in California, im going to go with this approach In CA, yes, you might not want to give up the travel time. B/c it's certainly not neccessary. But for all of us east coasters, it doesn't get anymore specific than training on the course itself. If you have the ability to do those key sessions up there, which IMO are absolutely quality s/b/r, i think it's ideal. Plus, for me, when I go away for a training weekend, there are not all the distractions of life like at home. No kids, no work, etc. So it is really the most quality training I could possibly get. I train, eat, sleep. That's it. That is NOT what happens at home! Edited by gopennstate 2010-04-23 11:02 AM |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not toooooo much talk about injuries, but I just sent his to Dylan and thougth I'd share with the group: OMG, I loooooooove aquajogging!!!! My minor in college was Aquatic Management and so I learned all the uber cool benefits of it!! The water keeps you cool, the pressure of the water helps with swelling, you work against resistance in BOTH directions (strengthening=few muscle imbalances=reduced risk for injury!), no impact on the joints, doable regardless of rain or snow (if you can do it indoors), etc!!! I actually scheduled in aqujogging when I was training for the Philly marathon. My body just can't handle running 5+ days/week. BUT, my body CAN handle running about 3-4 days/week. The aquajogging is either used as recovery to help loosen up when I'm tight or sore or is used for strengthening. I jog, cross country ski (<- that is REALLY REALLY good for you!) and do other "things" like pretending I'm a football player running through tires or I do different leg moves in the shallow end to work on range of motion around my hips!. Anyone else an aquajogger????? Wave your aquajog belt PROUDLY! |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If triathletes are normally depicted as type A personalities then I can see where people want the preparation. Surprises suck. =p Training trips are just nice to familiarize-where's that nasty corner on the bike leg or where's that pub for the post-race gorge fest. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-04-23 12:12 PM Good points, but ultimately its fun isn't it? It's like going to camp and being a kid again ![]() Yep. Tons of fun. We had a blast last year. The only thing I want to do differently is bump everything back a day so training can end on Saturday and partying can go down Sat night without having to do a long run Sun am! Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Based off of some RR from last year---there wasn't much FUN in Ironman!!!! The fun part, for me anyway, will be meeting BTers in person before the race!! HURRAY!!!!! It'd be cool to put faces with the BT names. =) I met Mirjam (swishyskirt) out of pure dumb luck last year at LP and she's one cool chick. I think there are some other cool chicks and dudes floating around this thread, too. =) I love being in a race and having a familiar face (also racing) send out shout out my way and vice versa. I feel the cockles of my heart tingling with excitement already! |

The only thing I want to do differently is bump everything back a day so training can end on Saturday and partying can go down Sat night without having to do a long run Sun am! I ran 13 miles after the partying went down on Saturday last year! ![]() I'm not going up there just because I'm doing the race. I went up there last year and was racing IMWI. To me it's heaven on earth, one of my absolute favorite places. I went in late October just for fun and am going in three weeks just for fun. I'll hike all day one day and not even s/b/r so I think it all depends on what you want to get out of it. I view it as a mini vacation with the bonus opportunity to do good training. |
