i heard back from cobb and they are sending me a new saddle.  they've always had great customer service so i wasn't surprised by this even though its out of warranty.

however... this is the part i'm not really understanding.  ginger, john's wife wrote

"We have found that this saddle “problem” happens on the Cervelo aero seat post—the clamping angle is different from other frames."

if its a known issue why would i put the same saddle back on.  and not to be a jerk, but why would they even resend the same saddle.

the number of hours i had on the current saddle when it failed on my cervelo is close to the number of hours i'll spend for the rest of this round of IM training.  meaning, race day will be in the red zone of when the failure is expected.

anyone have any thoughts?

That you will come away from IM Florida with a story to top the red ants!!!!

HA! i love this!!!

Yeah, what Tony said. I think I'd be exploring other options, whether Cobb or non-Cobb. You have time to try various saddles, there must be another one that will fit you?

That is pretty interesting, I'd respond with what you just posted about that doesn't leave you feeling comfortable about putting the same saddle with a known issue back on the same bike and ask what your options might be.

Edited to add that given how much time you have on that saddle vs. time left, I would personally look at picking up anothe r brand ASAP if they don't respond back immediately with a good answer.

i'm probably being oversensitive here and didn't put this in my post because i know john is around BT and all.  but i did email them that, never heard back.. they just sent me a fedex confirmation.  a little disappointing but maybe the email got overlooked or something.   plan to call them today.

also wondering what cervelo would think of her comment.

good idea on a new one asap!

Ouch. I'd shoot them a note back explaining what you said here. Are they just hoping the issue goes away.

I moved back to the Adamo road. Sold my Cobb Plus to someone on my team. Never got use to it.

Back from a crazy week. 3 days in San Antonio boozing it up, then 3 days at IMC camp.

16 hrs of s/b/r and 2 hrs yoga over 60 hr period. good times.

But at least I can say that my injury isn't holding me back. Rode the 180k course faster than last year, and ran 3 hrs on Sunday.

ok,  here's the latest.  i spoke with John for a bit about it.  Apparently its the side clamp force on the cervelo seat clamp that's the issue.  he's had 5 our of ~2000 fail and they've all failed on the cervelo.

he said don't worry about it.  just keep riding the new saddle and a month from the race call him up and he'll send another.

again, i really appreciate the customer service, but i'm not sure this give me the warm and fuzzies about this seat.

i've tried the max and max+ and neither have worked in the past.

thoughts?

I'd still be hesitant to have to rely on it during a race.  Any LBS's that will let you try some out before buying?  I have an adamo on my Tri-bike and it seems to work well for me, but I also have random specialized seats on my road bikes and they don't bother me also, so I am probably not the best to recommend a saddle

Why would they expect you to ride a saddle to almost failure?  how do they know this one won't fail after a shorter time period.  I would get the new one, sell it and look into a different brand.

Get the new saddle and sell it to someone who does not ride a Cervelo.  Take the money and buy a new saddle, Adamo is my choice.  You were lucky the last time you weren't covered in road rash or worse.  I say don't put it back on your bike.

You'll get more power out the saddle anyways.  Take the saddle he gives you and rock it.  It breaks then you stand up and POWER ON!

Tough call here.  I am sure that you appreciate the customer service, but take the new saddle, and thank him a ton, and sever ties.  Go find a new seat, and sell the one they give you.

Glad you came out of the experience right side up, John.  Hope you get the saddle issues worked out.

Had a good hot weather acclimation day yesterday.  Got a 1 mi swim, 38.5 mi. ride, and 1.5 mi. run accomplished in 97 degrees.  Started reading "Fifty Shades of Grey" last night and when I finally glanced at the clock I was on page 160 and it was 2 am.  LOL   Resting and reading more today.  Hubby keeps asking, "Well?" Told him he's going to have to read it for himself.

As far as a mg relay race, count me in.  I'm not fast, but I can last a long time. Wink

P.S.  How is it possible to ride 112 (or even 56) miles in 90 degree temps?  And then to run afterward?  I just can't wrap my mind around it.  I think I could survive the ride, but wouldn't be able to do any running!

You would be surprised what you can accomplish in high heat when you pace yourself.

Going out for my long ride tomorrow and it supposed to hit 107F with the heat index.  I don't have to run afterwards, but I am heading back to the High Bluffs for 8-10 Cat 5 climbs and acclimitation.  I've never ridden 5+ hours in this kind of heat and humidity, but I am armed with the data from my last 90F ride and just plan to hydrate more and pace myself accordingly.  Stay tuned.

If you enjoy inspiring stories, give this one a read!! The trails they mention in this article are FOR REAL... very, very steep and tough!!

Suzy: BE SAFE tomorrow!!! Egads, sounds miserable, but what a great opportunity in case you are "blessed" with such temps come race day!

Be careful out there.

Doing hill repeats tonight. I'm slowly grinding out one, I see a guy zipping down the other side. I hear a SMASH. Look over, he's laying on the gravel. He was descending, and a car was turning left. Fair enough. Then buddy in a Ford F150 goes around the car turning left and rubs my guy into the curb and over into the gravel. While he was laying on the ground, he said he saw the driver of the truck slow down and and look in his rearview mirror and then take off. Cops came. But no license plate, means nothing doing. Had a guy walking his dog run over to help> He let our teammate go over to his place and cleanup after. And his helmet was cracked.  Grrr.

Let us know how your ride goes.  I had a headache the evening after my long effort on Monday.  I think I stayed hydrated well enough, but my neck and shoulders got really tight and achy toward the end of my ride.  Weak neck muscles, I guess.

Ladies only:  Are you able to ride for 3+ hours without your pubic bone being sore and feeling bruised for days afterward?  (front, not sit bones--guys, I told you this was for the girls only).  I tried about 15 different seats before I bought the one I have.  I do fine with shorter rides (1-2 hours), but not the long efforts.

Jayne not a chick, but if it is not the saddle what type of shorts are you wearing?  I always feel that it very important not to be "cheap" when it comes to bike shorts!!!

I'm rotating between my Sugio tri shorts and a pair of Canari Micro bike shorts.  I have learned that more padding is not necessarily better, and chamois cream is your friend.  Thinking about trying out a couple pair of good quality tri short--any suggestions?

I did try tipping the nose of my seat down just a bit on today's ride, but that just made me feel like I was sliding forward all the time.  Not a solution.

I'm all for working with a good fitter if you have ANY saddle issues. Pain after 3 hours is an issue. Your saddle might be fine but not adjusted best for you, or it might not be the right saddle. Articulate your problems well -- people who know bikes also know anatomy. As for tri shorts, I cycle exclusively in them and also use no chamois cream (good saddle fit, eh?). My favorite tri shorts are sugoi and zoot. Good luck!!
